Wuzhen - A Journey Through 1,300 Years of History and Culture
On the third day of our stay in Hangzhou, we decided to book a one-day tour to the renowned water towns of Wuzhen and Xitang. The tour booking service was conveniently located in our hotel, making the process quick and effortless. We made the reservation on the morning of our second day for the following day, and by that evening, we received all the necessary details about where to meet for the tour.
Wuzhen, our first stop, is notable as the birthplace of the famous literary figure Mao Dun. This ancient town is one of the six most significant water towns in the Yangtze River Delta, with a history stretching back 1,300 years. The town is characterised by its well-preserved old buildings that line the riverbanks and its meandering streets that reflect traditional cultural values.
What to do and eat?
- Mao Dun museum
Visit the Mao Dun Museum in Wuzhen to learn about the life and works of the renowned literary genius, Mao Dun. The museum showcases his contributions to Chinese literature and offers insights into his personal life.
- Printed clothes museum
Explore the Printed Clothes Museum, which exhibits the traditional craft of blue calico printing. You can see how these beautiful fabrics are made and learn about their historical significance in Chinese culture.
- Dong Bo meat
This delicious dish consists of pork belly braised in a herbal soup for many hours until it melts in your mouth. It's a flavorful and hearty treat that reflects the culinary traditions of the region.
If you don't want to go to work, come to Wuzhen to enjoy the cool and experience the slow life

Wuzhen during the off-season on a clear day is truly the best
I was lucky to encounter a beautiful sunny day in the spring, and since March is the off-season, there weren't many tourists, which made for a great experience. Here are some tips:
🧚🏻♀️Transportation
The most convenient way is to take a taxi from Tongxiang high-speed train station🚄, which takes about 45 minutes and costs 50-70 yuan.
🧚🏻♀️Accommodation
The food and lodging in Wuzhen are uniformly managed, so there's no need to worry about being overcharged. I recommend staying in the scenic area. I booked a double package for 699 yuan on Ctrip, which included one night in a waterside B&B, tickets to the Xizha scenic area, an electric car in the scenic area, and experiences like Hanfu dress-up, among other things.
You can follow the official Wuzhen tourism booking for more options.
Another advantage of staying inside is that your luggage can be delivered directly to your room, and when you leave, they can also transport it to the visitor center at the entrance for you. The service is very thoughtful.
🧚🏻♀️Other
The mini-program 'Wuzhen Tourism Service' contains all the maps of attractions and food. Just navigate according to your preferences. There are also fixed activities and performances, such as flower drum opera, Pingtan, shadow play, tea art, etc. The times and locations are clearly written there. Personally, I think you can spend a day and a night in Xizha without rushing.
🧚🏻♀️Coffee
The most recommended is 'Ling Shui Man Bar'. The view by the window is amazing, and the coffee is very good.
🧚🏻♀️Morning Tea Guest
This is a local breakfast unique to the area, seemingly only available to those staying in the scenic area. There are only over 300 free spots per day (we booked too late and missed out, so be sure to reserve a day in advance, or you can also pay for it). It ends before 9:30 am.
😇In summary, the facilities and services throughout the scenic area are very comprehensive, and the prices are not exorbitantly high as in some tourist areas. You can truly relax and enjoy good food, drinks, and accommodation. The service staff inside are all very friendly. I really like the gentle and polite way people from Jiangsu and Zhejiang speak. The overall facilities and management can be said to be the ceiling of Chinese ancient towns, right?!!
Travel Guide to the Ancient Town of Wuzhen in Jiangnan
🌸Wuzhen, a heart-stirring ancient town in Jiangnan, its beauty and charm cannot be fully expressed in words. This scenic spot located in Tongxiang City, Jiaxing, has attracted countless tourists with its unique Jiangnan water town style and historical charm. Next, I will share my travel guide to Wuzhen, hoping to be helpful to you.
🍀First of all, regarding the travel time, the Wuzhen scenic area is open all year round, and the opening hours are 9:00-22:30 every day. For the travel route, I suggest that you can visit in the following order:
1️⃣Day1:
As soon as you enter the scenic spot, the first thing that comes into view is the Xizha Old Street. This street is full of the characteristic style of the Jiangnan water town, as if it has traveled through time and space. You can appreciate the ancient architecture here, taste local delicacies, and buy characteristic handicrafts. Then go to the Caomu Benziran Dyeing Workshop, a dyeing workshop full of historical sense. Here you can understand the ancient dyeing process and also appreciate the beautiful dyed cloth. After lunch, go to the Ganchun Market, where you can buy some characteristic handicrafts or taste local delicacies. Finally, visit the night view of Wuzhen. The night view of Wuzhen has a different flavor, making people feel as if they are in a fairy tale world.
2️⃣Day2:
In the morning, go to the water market to experience the morning tea guests. Here you can taste the local breakfast and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Jiangnan water town. Then you can experience the rowing boat experience, sitting on the boat to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Jiangnan water town. Next, visit attractions such as Qiaoli Bridge and Bailian Tower. These attractions all have their own unique charm, making people linger.
🍀During the tour of Wuzhen, in addition to visiting attractions, there are also some special activities and festivals to participate in. For example, the Good Life Festival·Ganchun Collection and others are characteristic activities of Wuzhen, and each activity has its own characteristics and charm. In addition, there are some accommodation facilities to choose from in the scenic area. (Living in the scenic area, you can overlook the beauty of the scenic area and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal❤️)
🍀Regarding travel expenses, the specific travel expenses will vary according to personal consumption levels and itinerary arrangements. Generally speaking, the ticket price is 150 yuan/person, and the accommodation cost varies according to different grades and seasons, roughly ranging from 300-1000 yuan. In addition, transportation costs and other personal consumption need to be considered. Therefore, it is recommended to make a budget plan in advance to avoid unnecessary expenses.
🌸What I want to say finally is that Wuzhen is a place that needs to be felt with the heart. Here you can feel the tranquility and beauty of the Jiangnan water town, and you can also feel the heaviness of history and the connotation of culture. Whether you like history or nature, Wuzhen is a place worth visiting. I hope my guide can be helpful to your trip and look forward to meeting you in Wuzhen.
The ancient town rated as the most beautiful in China by National Geographic is stunningly amazing!
Wuzhen, located in Tongxiang City, Jiaxing, Zhejiang, is divided into Dongzha, Xizha, Nanzha, and Beizha by the cross-shaped inland river system. With a civilization history of over 7000 years and a town-building history of 1300 years, it perfectly preserves the appearance and pattern of the ancient water town in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, known as the 'land of fish and rice, and the mansion of silk'.
The southern water town is gentle and moving, and Wuzhen is definitely the best among them. With white walls and grey tiles, bluestone roads, half of the town is mundane, and the other half is poetic.
Mu Xin described Wuzhen in this haiku: Jiangnan is green/ the stone steps are also green/ it always seems like it just rained. The exquisite sunlight that has not been seen for a long time falls on the green brick ground through the fine wood carving lattices...
Take advantage of the good times, always go to Jiangnan, always go to Wuzhen.
Take a rowing boat through the water town, stroll in the small alleys with green tiles and white walls, and feel the charm of the ancient town for thousands of years.
Wuzhen Water Town
Wuzhen Water Town, lying in the northern part of Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province, is a typical ancient town in southern China. It is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from both Hangzhou and Suzhou, and 140 kilometers (87 miles) from Shanghai.
As one of the top six ancient towns in the southern region of the Yangtze River, Wuzhen Water Town boasts more than six thousand years of history and has always been a fertile land with abundant rice, fish and silk. It preserves the ancient appearance well and oozes charm of the water town itself. The small town, with houses made of black bricks and gray tiles contrasting sharply with the white walls, making it appear like a Chinese ink wash drawing. Stone bridges are seen here and there. Small boats with black awnings are floating on the murmuring rivers. Whether wandering along the riverside or strolling in the lanes paved with blue flagstones, you will be deeply impressed by the picturesque scenery and slow lifestyle.
A crisscrossing river divides the whole Wuzhen Water Town into four scenic sections, which are respectively called as Dongzha, Nanzha, Xizha, and Beizha by local people. Since Nanzha and Beizha are less developed, tourists often prefer to visit Dongzha and Xizha. Dongzha maintains the basic original layout while Xizha has been reconstructed to reproduce the ancient appearance of the water town. Compared with Dongzha, Xizha is more bustling with numerous shops.

Wuzhen Water Town
Getting There - We took a car from Shanghai and drove 2 hours to Wuzhen. You can also take the train from Hongqiao railway station to the Tongxiang station in Wuzhen.
Attractions - Wuzhen Water Town: There are two parts Dongzha scenic spot and Xizha (plus another 2 waterways but these are the most popular)
Hotels - Na'nian Wancun Zhangshe Boutique We stayed here & it was convenient, close to the entrance of the water town and many restaurants nearby. Around 400 RMB per night
Food & Restaurants - Mostly Chinese cuisine - fried radish cakes and pressed spring rolls were popular. Lots of bars inside the town.
The entrance to the water town (both Dongzha and Xizha) is RMB190. Only valid for 1 day. We only visited Xizha and it was RMB150 - it's really big so there is a lot to see. Can easily stay there for 3-5 hours. With that said, it was not that much different to any other water town I've been to before.
NOTE: Once you enter the town you cannot leave and re-enter. I think this is to encourage customers to stay inside the water town (at a price ofcourse - hotels range from 700 RMB up, but then you don't have to pay entrance to the town).
It rained while we were in the water town and you can catch a ride to the exit for RMB10 per person as the walk can be around 20minutes depending on where you are. Enjoy!

WUZHEN SCENIC SPOT
Wuzhen is an ideal destination for sightseeing, leisure tour, business event and exhibition. It fully preserves the water town’s style and pattern in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republican period. Little rivers, houses on the two banks, little bridges connecting streets, stone paved alleys, all these compose the most typical Jiangnan stle water town. Wuzhen can be divided into four parts, and the eastern part and the western part are the scenic zones requiring a ticket to visit; while the southern part and northern part is the living quarters for the locals.I highly recommend it i went on a school trip.
Strolling through Wuzhen at night, quiet and peaceful, long and simple. The winding bluestone road, the long-lasting running-in looks bright and smooth, the old threshold sculpt and the mottled lacquer mark show the charm of time. In the typical Jiangnan water town, water and bridge are its main tone and most Rich and colorful scenery. The beauty of Wuzhen lies in the beauty of the night scene, such as a dream in the evening, and a rose swaying in the morning light. People are lingering.
#Please, summer camp #
small Wucun, also hidden a large zoo.
This is not a giraffe, an elephant, a peacock...but a group of poultry animals that have been raised and fattened. Its so much love~
theres a lot of fun next to the shooting range, fish pond fishing, etc.~/ Hh/ Wucun is a traditional Jiangnan village adjacent to Wuzhen Xizha Historic District. It restores the rural style of the 1960s and 1970s. It is fresh and simple, and it is forgotten.
450 acres of natural pastoral, complete internal facilities (characteristic accommodation, catering, entertainment, leisure activities), one-price all-inclusive mode, intimate CCO butler service... anyone can enjoy / find themselves in this paradise Childhood time.
Return to nature, make bamboo rafts, catch shrimps, hand grind beans, try farming, and feel the original village life.
You can't miss the net red card in the town of Wuzhen. Wuzhen Art Exhibition
Every time you come to Wuzhen, there will be surprises. This time is no exception. I accidentally hit the Wuzhen Art Exhibition in Wuzhen North Gate. It feels really open eyes. And it is a big brain opening, it is really recommended to visit the tourists in Wuzhen, in addition to Xizha and Dongzha, the art exhibition is also worth the time to spend.
I didn't know anything about the art exhibition before coming to Wuzhen, but after coming to the art exhibition, I found that there are not a lot of tourists visiting here. The exhibition area has been transformed from the old factory building. It is very old and new. The space art design is too much to describe in words.
It is said that the exhibition here is not changed regularly. When I went there, I saw a lot of great designs from famous artists at home and abroad. Some of these designs are very advanced, and many of them are very common to our side. Ordinary things, but after the art processing, it is thought-provoking.
Ticket: 30 yuan.
Recommended stay time: at least 2 hours
try to keep quiet when visiting, some art exhibitions are not allowed to take pictures, to respect the artist's creation, some can take pictures, but can not open the flash. At the same time, you can't touch the exhibits with your hands.
For the ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River, winter is a low season for tourism. First, because the weather is cold, it is not suitable for going out, and there is no heating in the room. Secondly, the scenery in winter is also worse, but if you happen to be in the old town of Jiangnan when it is snowing, it is different.
Wuzhen in the winter is somewhat deserted, and the snow falls on the roof of the Linshui wooden house in the Jiangnan water town, accumulating a thick layer, like the northeast snow town. The West Gate of Wuzhen is famous for its night view.
There are fewer tourists in winter, and the boats on the river are also neatly docked. There has already been a layer of snow on the roof, which has not been cleaned and more artistic. Tickets for Wuzhen are not cheap. Tickets for a scenic spot in Xizha are 150 yuan, which can only be valid on the same day. It is the most expensive in the ancient town of Jiangnan.

乌镇 Wuzhen - The best Ancient town you must visit!
#chinatrip
Wuzhen is located in 江南, somewhere between Hangzhou and Shanghai.
It is an ancient town that requires admission tickets or you will need to stay overnight.
Highly recommend to spend 1 night inside this quiet and peaceful town to enjoy the fabulous scenery inside this town.
Riding the old wooden manual boat in the river while enjoying the night scenery is definitely one of the bucket list in Wuzhen.
The 早茶客 is one of the most famous breakfast event to have inside and usually it is difficult to get the ticket.
Let's visit Wuzhen!

Next stop: Water Town Wuzhen
Wuzhen in summer.
I stayed in Wuzhen Xizha for two nights during the summer vacation. I stayed in a youth hostel, which was affordable and allowed me to enjoy the empty mornings and leisurely nights. As long as you slow down, the charm of the ancient town by the water will slowly ripple out. In the morning, you can walk on the empty stone road, have breakfast and listen to opera with the morning tea guests, watch movies by the canal in the evening, chat in the breeze, and wait until the tourists are gone.
Solo Sojourn in Serene Wuzhen
Venturing into the ancient water town of Wuzhen, I embarked on a solitary journey through time. As I navigated the labyrinthine waterways, a sense of peace washed over me. The quiet serenity of the canals, punctuated by the gentle lapping of water, was a soothing balm for the soul.
Lost in the maze of narrow alleyways, I stumbled upon hidden courtyards and quaint tea houses. The aroma of freshly brewed tea filled the air, inviting me to pause and savor the moment. I indulged in a pot of fragrant oolong tea, watching the world go by from a tranquil vantage point.
In the evening, I joined a group of local artists painting by the river. The soft glow of lanterns cast a magical ambiance, inspiring creativity and fostering a sense of community. As I dipped my brush into the ink, I felt a connection to the rich cultural heritage of Wuzhen.
The solitude of my journey allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience. I had the freedom to explore at my own pace, capturing the essence of Wuzhen through my lens and my heart.
Wuzhen Deyang Resort Hotel.
Wuzhen Deyang Resort Hotel Stay + Wuzhen Tour Experience
This time, I stayed at Wuzhen Deyang Resort Hotel, a suite with breakfast for two, including two tickets to Xizha Scenic Area, two boat tickets, and a lacquer fan experience.
Guests staying at this hotel can take the tour bus and enter and exit the scenic area unlimited times. The overall experience is very smooth, comfortable, and relaxing.
If you don't have breakfast at the hotel in the morning, you can enjoy Wuzhen morning tea. You can eat as much as you want from the food in picture 5. The scenic area is under unified management. The homestays in the scenic area seem to have a morning tea quota of only CNY 30 per person, but we have no quota.
Overall hotel experience: As a business hotel that often hosts Internet conferences and events, the materials used in the decoration of this hotel in Wuzhen are very good, and the service process is very good. It is very convenient to pick up and drop off luggage, lead to guest rooms, and book tour buses. In addition, the water quality is much better than in Shanghai. However, the bedding did not meet expectations and did not match the price. The mattress was okay (the hardness can be adjusted, but it is fancy).
Don't hesitate! High-value hotels in Wuzhen!
Great-value homestays in Wuzhen, with high value for money!

[Four] What's more, the hotel package includes meals, which are local specialties, clean and hygienic, and taste great! Everyone in the group was very happy with the food.

Wuzhen – A Timeless Water Town
#voyagevibes
South of the Yangtze River, Wuzhen is famed as China’s most beautiful ancient water town, with scenery like an ink painting.
I had the chance to visit in June, though, unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time for a boat ride. I’m definitely coming back to experience it! With 1,000+ years of history and architecture reflecting Chinese aesthetics of “small bridges, flowing water, and old houses,” Wuzhen offers a sense of timelessness. Known as a “living fossil of ancient Eastern civilization,” it’s a place of deep cultural and historical value.
Often called the “Venice of Asia,” Wuzhen’s winding canals and stone bridges transport visitors back in time to a serene, poetic world.
