Wadi Rum
#2024Travel Review
Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is where Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. We took a jeep to watch the sunset. This place is really not like the earth, with beauty beyond time and space. We camped here for one night. The dinner was very special. The food is buried in the sand and cooked, and then taken out, the starry sky at night is very charming.

Rose Desert Wadi Rum
"Wadi Rum" is located about 60 kilometers east of the Red Sea city of Aqaba and is the largest dry valley in the country, also known as the "Valley of the Moon." 2300 years ago, this was the territory of ancient cultures such as the Nabataean Kingdom, and there are still remnants of temples and rock paintings left by the Nabataeans. Today, it is inhabited by the Bedouins and is famous for its wine-red sand at sunset and moon-like surface. In 1917, British officer Thomas Edward Lawrence, known as "Lawrence of Arabia," negotiated with Arab leaders here to resist the rule of the Ottoman Turkish Empire. In 2011, UNESCO listed this rare natural and cultural dual landscape as a World Heritage Site. Stepping into this vast desert valley, the endless red sand and towering, rugged rocks make one feel as if they are on another marvelous planet. Although it is impossible to capture the elegant figure of the elusive Arabian oryx, one can touch the rock paintings and inscriptions in the heart of the desert to feel the long history; climb cliffs, race across the desert, witness the red sun and yellow sand, and gaze at the vast starry sky... The beauty of Wadi Rum and the simplicity of the local people will forever remain in one's heart. "The only thing worth leaving behind are footprints, you can't take anything away." — This is the poetic slogan on the ticket to the Valley of the Moon!
"Mars Valley Terrace Hotel, an unforgettable bath"
#100 Ways to Travel
There are different large and small camp hotels within the wadi rum of Mars Valley in Jordan
Hundreds to thousands a night ranges of course cheap quality is certainly not good
We stayed at the hotel tonight Each room consisted of four bubbles
Divided into entrance double doors, living room, bedroom, toilet
Hot springs, hotels are a lot of bathing but looking at this view day and night bathing is very unforgettable ❤️
The price is about 3000 yuan a night including breakfast and dinner
Air conditioning is cold enough 👍 water power is also ok
Wadi Rum Protected Area
Wadi Rum Protected Area is one of the most unique and beautiful desert landscapes in the world. As you enter the valley, you will be deeply impressed by the massive rocks and colorful sand formations stretching to the horizon. Driving through the sand dunes and rugged mountain paths offers you a chance to quietly explore this amazing scenery. The area is adorned with towering mountain peaks and flowing sand fountains, adding to the imagination in this breathtaking desert landscape. Don't miss the opportunity to sleep under the starry night sky in this enchanting place.
Crossing Wadi Rum|Desert Graffiti and Sunset Wonders
In Wadi Rum, Jordan, you will feel as if you are on Mars with its unique terrain and breathtaking starry sky. Here, there is a hint of rose red that is more than the Sahara and Chile's Atacama Desert. The steep rocky peaks and brilliant starry sky make it the most unmissable destination in Jordan besides the ancient city of Petra.
We chose to stay at Wadi Rum Night Luxury Camp, where the facilities are quite good for Wadi Rum, with large tents offering air conditioning and even a bathing area. Although our tent did not have air conditioning, we were out exploring during the day, and the desert climate was cool and pleasant at night. They also offer star rooms, which need to be booked in advance. The food is quite good, with rice and fruit included. The accommodation price is about 200-300 dollars.
We rented a car directly from the ancient city of Petra to Wadi Rum, where the hotel staff greeted us and offered full-day and half-day tour options. The itinerary includes major attractions such as mushroom-shaped rocks, large arches, and small arches. Climbing up and down is required, so it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes. There is also a rock crevice for hiking, but I chose not to enter due to its damp and dark conditions.
The locals drew graffiti on my hand, saying that this desert has a tenacious vitality. We tasted locally brewed tea and freshly baked bread, chatting about carefree topics. Although the weather was hot during the day, it did not feel unbearable.
You must not miss the sunset in Wadi Rum. We climbed up high sand dunes with great effort, standing on the top of the rocks overlooking the entire desert. The distant sunset gradually sank, and the shadow of the rocky mountains slowly covered this barren land. There were also Bedouins playing a flute with a faint melancholy sound, evoking ancient memories.
When descending the dunes, you can try sliding down with the help of gravity, which is an exhilarating experience.
The most beautiful night in Wadi Rum, the dry climate makes the starry sky particularly bright. Looking up at the Milky Way outside the tent, you inadvertently catch a meteor, counting meteors until you fall asleep, as if you were in outer space.
After having an open-air breakfast in the desert the next day, we tried sandboarding on the dunes, which was very challenging but great fun. The local guy patiently helped me carry the board to the top of the hill and slide down again.
Jordan is among the top three of the more than 50 countries I have visited. Although there are some tourist traps, the natural and cultural landscapes are rich and unique. This small country can be easily toured by car. To this day, I still miss and marvel at the sunset and starry sky of Wadi Rum. The world was once so beautiful and will always be beautiful.

Do you remember 'Dune'? The protagonists live on a desolate, water-scarce planet covered with sand, and the original scene is Wadi Rum in Jordan, which, apart from being a filming location for the sand dunes, has also been featured in Hollywood sci-fi movies like 'Star Wars', 'The Martian', and 'Transformers' with its desolate alien landscapes.
⛰【Travel Tips】
📍Detailed address: Wadi Rum is located in the southern part of Jordan, also known as 'Valley of the Moon', not far from Petra and the southern coastal city of Aqaba. You can charter a car from Petra or Amman to get there, and the desert hotel you booked will send a car to pick you up at the tourist center where most visitors arrive. It's impossible to go into the desert on your own because there are no roads.
🕙Opening hours: The site is open 24 hours, and there are many hotels and tents in the desert. Prices range from hundreds to thousands. Book your room in advance, then arrange a full-day or half-day desert tour at the front desk. It is recommended to spend two days and stay one night here, so you have more freedom and can fully appreciate the desert's scenery at different times.
🌟Highlights:
👉I personally think Wadi Rum is the most spectacular desert wilderness landscape in Jordan, with its red sand mountains and unique geological structures that are very powerful. This place is not an endless desert; there are many rock mountains in the middle, with weathered rocks of various shapes, some as large as castles, as well as various cliffs, caves, arch structures, and canyons, so it is also a dual World Heritage Site for both nature and culture. In the Dahaidao area of Hami, Xinjiang, there is a similar landscape, but unfortunately, the domestic development support has not kept up, making it a very niche place.
🏜️Best way to travel: I booked a desert jeep tour at the hotel on the spot (additional charge). You can choose four hours, all day, or two days, covering some of the most famous local scenes. The longer the time, the more spots you visit. It's quite dangerous to drive around on your own in such a big place with no roads. Therefore, this kind of guided tour is a must. My half-day tour included the Mushroom Rock, two huge natural bridges, the magnificent sand sea, scenes from 'The Martian', and watching the sunset in the evening, going to a Bedouin tent for tea, etc. Along the way, you might encounter some camel providers who charge a fee; if you haven't ridden one in Petra, you can ride and take photos here. It's cheaper than Petra, about 10 Jordanian dinars.
👉There are many Western tourists here, and I didn't see many Asian faces. The overall experience feels very wild, yet everything is well-organized, with one spectacular scene after another. Personally, I think this is the best experience among the many attractions in Jordan. It's still a bit hot during the day, but even in the desert, it gets cool at night. In the evening, there are some fixed locations specifically for watching the sunset, and the driver will take you there. Before this, you can go to a Bedouin tent to listen to music and drink tea. After the sunset, there will be a car to take you back to the hotel, the whole arrangement is not tiring, but the scenery is extremely beautiful. Very worthwhile.
🛏️Accommodation: I stayed at Wadi Rum UFO Luxotel, which is a popular bubble tent in the desert, with scenery right outside the hotel. Each room has a terrace outside, and a nice buffet is provided in the evening, and you can also enjoy the brilliant starry sky at night. Spending a day in the hotel feels like a magical experience. It's like going on a vacation to Mars.
📌Small Tips:
• Bring enough water, as there are not many places to sell water in the vast desert.
• Drinking water in Bedouin tents is free, but the crafts for sale are quite expensive.
Desert Wonders of Wadi Rum
My excursion to Wadi Rum in Jordan was an adventure into a landscape so striking and otherworldly, it felt like stepping onto another planet. Known as the Valley of the Moon, this vast desert wilderness, with its towering sandstone mountains, endless dunes, and ancient petroglyphs, offered a glimpse into both the Earth's geological past and centuries of human history.
A 4x4 jeep tour through the heart of Wadi Rum was an exhilarating experience, navigating through the red sands and around the monolithic rock formations. Each turn unveiled a new, breathtaking vista, where the sheer size and beauty of the desert were on full display. The colors of the landscape shifted with the sun, from deep oranges and reds to soft pinks and purples, painting a stunning desert canvas.
Camping under the stars in a traditional Bedouin tent was a highlight. The clear desert skies, free from light pollution, offered an unparalleled view of the Milky Way. The silence of the desert at night, broken only by the occasional breeze, was a profound experience of peace and solitude.
Exploring the ancient petroglyphs and inscriptions, some of which date back thousands of years, provided a connection to the people who once traversed these lands. It was a reminder of the enduring human spirit in the face of vast and harsh landscapes.
The hospitality of the Bedouin guides added a rich cultural layer to the adventure. Sharing traditional meals, stories, and music around the campfire was an authentic way to experience the Bedouin way of life, deeply connected to the desert and its rhythms.
Remember, the desert climate can be extreme. Preparing for hot days and cold nights, and staying hydrated, is crucial. Respect for the natural environment and the local culture is also paramount when visiting this unique and fragile ecosystem.
Wadi Rum not only offered an adventure into a stunning natural landscape but also a journey into a culture and history that has been intricately linked to this desert for generations. It was a vivid reminder of the diverse and awe-inspiring beauty of our planet.

The Hejaz Railway: A Journey through Time
At Jordan’s Hejaz Railway desert stop, visitors encounter a refurbished locomotive from a bygone era. This historical aspect of Wadi Rum invokes the memory of the Great Arab Revolt that helped shape the modern Middle East.
The refurbished steamer at the Hejaz Wadi Rum stop puts history from 1916 on display for today’s audiences. Visitors can walk the perimeter of the train, step inside to observe the compartments, and even participate in during shows organized by the Jordan Heritage Revival Company. This desert station serves as a tangible link to the origins of the modern Middle East.
While Wadi Rum may be on your bucket list for its visual parallels to the arid, crimson landscapes of Mars, a stop at the Hejaz Railway station is worth the time. Discovering unique, historical gems within famous destinations often proves to be one of the most rewarding aspects of travel.

Wadi Rum’s Stunning Canyons
Wadi Rum, the mystical desert of southern Jordan, has a great network of canyons – ancient corridors carved by wind and water. Each canyon tells a story, etching its presence into the sandstone cliffs.
The 5-kilometre-long Barrah Canyon winds through the heart of Wadi Rum. Its rock walls rise like guardians, inviting hikers to explore. Sandboarding Adrenaline in Wadi Rum
Unlike other wadis, Wadi Rum boasts both rocky areas and soft sand dunes, perfect for sandboarding. The grainy sand provides excellent control, making it a unique and safe sandboarding destination. Imagine gliding down these dunes, leaving your mark on the ancient landscape.
Wadi Rum’s sandboarding experiences are exhilarating. Join a guided tour to explore the dunes. As the sun rises, strap on your board or sled and ride the undulating waves of sand. The thrill lies in the friction.
Wadi Rum’s Bedouin guides know the desert intimately and can lead you to the best sandboarding spots, ensuring a memorable adventure. Along the way, you’ll glimpse the nomadic lifestyle, ride camels, and savor local meals. The desert becomes more than a landscape – it’s a cultural immersion. After a day of sandboarding, consider staying overnight in a Bedouin tent.

A bit of sand in the shorts was worth it

Had an amazing 2 days seeing the desert in Wadi Rum. Definitely the best part of my visit in Jordan.
Try to get there around the afternoon to get the most out of the trip. If you get there at that time, then you can see the sunset on one of the Jeep tours.
Also see the sunset in the morning. The view is amazing.
The places to sleep, no matter which camp you choose, are very comfortable.
SUNCITY CAMP -BUBBLE TENT
The camp consists of rooms decorated to look like bedwin tents and another part looks like space bubbles The units are scattered around the desert with basic walk wayThe camp offers local food fair in taste and variety The most thing is the surrounding mountains as they are breathtaking specially at sunset .
It is a day back to nature.A must visit!!!
