When I visited Matsushima, I was first overwhelmed by its beautiful scenery. The scenery created by the large and small islands floating in the blue sea was truly spectacular and soothing to the soul. When I went around the islands on a sightseeing boat, the view from the sea was even more beautiful, and I could feel the silence and power of nature. The town of Matsushima itself is calm, and there are historical temples and hot spring towns, making it the perfect place to relax. There is a wealth of cultural heritage, especially Zuiganji Temple and Godaido, and I felt that it was a place where I could discover new charms every time I visited. I was surrounded by the calm atmosphere and natural beauty of Matsushima, and I was able to refresh both my body and mind.

Zuiganji Temple in Matsushima
Zuiganji Temple, officially named 'Matsushima Seiryu-zan Zuigan Enpuku Zenji,' is a Zen Buddhist temple currently affiliated with the Myoshinji branch of the Rinzai sect.
After the Battle of Sekigahara, Date Masamune, who established his government in Sendai, actively promoted the construction of shrines and temples to serve as spiritual anchors for his people, alongside the construction of Sendai Castle. Among these efforts, he particularly focused on the restoration of Enpukuji Temple, which had declined during the Sengoku period. Masamune himself laid out the plans for the project, sourcing materials from Kumano in Kishu, which had been regarded as a 'land of paradise' since the Heian period, and inviting 130 master craftsmen from the Kinai region. His dedication to the project is evident.
Due to its significance as a rare example of Momoyama art, the main hall (including the attached Onari Genkan) was designated a National Treasure in 1953, and the corridor connecting the kuri (priest's quarters) and the main hall was designated a National Treasure in 1959.

[Northeast Japan] Matsushima Zuiganji Temple: The solemn thirty-three Avalokitesvara statues
#temple
Matsushima, located in Sendai, northeastern Japan, is known as one of the three scenic spots in Japan. In addition to the beautiful scenery, Songdao also has a temple with a long history - Zuiganji Temple. As the Bodhi Temple of the famous Japanese general Date Masamune during the Warring States Period, Zuigenji Temple not only has a profound historical heritage, but also exudes the strong aesthetics of Date Masamune.
Zuiyan Temple was built in 828 and has gone through the turmoil of the Warring States Period. Set against the backdrop of towering trees, it looks particularly quiet and a little Zen-like. In addition to the eel graves, there are also thirty-three statues of Guanyin from the Western Kingdom outside the cave in the outer garden of the temple, adding a solemn atmosphere to the temple.
