Zaanse Schans, a small fairy tale in Zaanse Schans, Netherlands
Zaanse Schans, a small fairy tale in Zaanse Schans, Netherlands
🏖️Atmosphere/Facilities:
Zaanse Schans Car Village retains traditional windmill architecture and integrates a Dutch wooden shoe workshop and a cheese factory. In the wooden shoe workshop, local professional masters explain the shoemaking process, and there are many exquisite souvenirs to choose from. The cheese factory has a wide variety of cheeses that you can try. The service staff are friendly and the queuing process is fast. There are many small packages of cheese that you can buy back and give to your relatives and friends. It is very easy to visit and you can experience the traditional Dutch culture in one day. Essence.
The scenery of the farmhouse and the riverside is pleasant. There are also cute mini sheep that gather together and are very cute. You can get close and take photos if you are not afraid of animals. When you are tired of shopping, there is a coffee shop selling Dutch waffles and hot coffee. You will not be bored even if you stay there for an afternoon. A very cozy little fairy tale village.
💞Recommended reasons:
Along with Kinderdijk on the outskirts of Rotterdam, Zaanse Schans is one of the two major windmill attractions in the Netherlands. It is actually more suitable for tourists who are coming to experience the local folk culture of the Netherlands for the first time.
📍Address/Transportation:
It takes 20 minutes to take a Sprinter from Amsterdam Central Station to Zaanse Schans Train Station. No need to change trains, it costs about €3.5 – 4.5. It is also very simple to walk to the sightseeing area after getting off the bus.

The Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum that’s fun for all ages. Open year round, Zaans Schans is a free outdoor park with a collection of historical windmills. While the Zaanse Schans can be visited any time of year, the majority of the windmills are open to visitors from April to October. Besides windmills, you can also visit the souvenir shops, see clogs being made or visit a cheese farm near the Zaanse Schans.

🇳🇱 Truly a real Dutch experience 🚴🏼♂️
Zaanse Schans offers the picturesque countryside views and most beautiful windmill landscape, It's a unique part of the Netherlands. We stayed at b&b homestay nearby, as it’s only about a 10 minutes cycling to the village. The village full of wooden houses, windmills, barns and workshops, and the water sight are definitely worth visiting.
The windmills are the main attractions here, there are about 10 windmills, half of which are fully functional and can be visited (for an entrance fee). Several historic buildings were added in recent years. The clog workshop is part of museum, part demonstration, part souvenir store, like many of the shops, clogs were made by hand by a craftsman.
I loved the chance to soak up the history, explore the windmills, and learn about the Zaan district. It is one of the most popular destination in the Netherlands and located quite near to the city, very convenient assess with public transport.

Zaanse Schans, Netherlands - Seeing Windmill
Getting There - by train from Amsterdam
Attractions - windmills, old town charm
Food & Restaurants - various
Shopping - souvenirs
Zaanse Schans is famous for their windmills and the area is like a mini open air museums. It is also easily accessible by train from Amsterdam as a day trip.
One can spend a few hours exploring the neighborhood and small town charm.
One memorable experience is discovering the toll bridge for the ships, basically the bridge will open up to let the ships go past. As we were busy taking photos of the rainbow at the bridge (first photo), we did not realize the toll bridge was going to open up by splitting. Luckily, some kind locals warned us in time.
We saw a lot of farm animals like sheep, goats and even a cute cat whilst exploring the area.
It is nice to spend some time away from the city and explore this place with its own history.

Visit Zaanse Schans
Those who wish they could travel back in time and visit the Netherlands of the 17th and 18th centuries have come to the right place.
Zaanse Schans is located around 15 kilometers to the north of Amsterdam and is styled as an open-air museum where you can take a stroll around a traditional Dutch village and find out how ancient craftsmen would have worked.
Just some of the sights include a shipyard, a grocery store, a pewter factory, and a range of dainty green wooden houses.
You will also find some graceful windmills although out of the 600 that would have dotted the area in the days of old, only 5 now remain and can be visited by the public.
These include an iconic saw mill as well as an oil mill and you will find fun live demonstrations like a clog making session.

The windmills of Zaanse Schans are one of the most famous places to see these historical windmills in The Netherlands. Follow a day trip or take the sightseeing bus to reach these beautiful windmills. They are housed in a wonderful little site so it is easy to get around, there are also food options around and a shoe making factory. The nearby museum has a shop too if you like to get some souvenirs. It can get rainy so bring along an umbrella or raincoat.

Zaanse schans is located just 30 minutes away by train from Amsterdam Centraal Station. It is the closest place to see the windmills, where the people who live here still use windmills to produce some oils, and also other products. Here, you can also buy some traditional cocoa which taste so delicious. There are also cute houses around the village #HalloTrip

The Netherlands is known as the country of windmills. This is because most of the land in the Netherlands is a low-lying land. In ancient times, it was often necessary to fight against floods, so windmills were widely used as equipment for drainage and milling. Zaanse Schans, the famous windmill village in the Netherlands, is also the closest one to the Dutch first Amsterdam, about 15 km away, and can be reached by train from the central railway station.
This is an old and beautiful village, next to the banks of the Zanhe River, a variety of windmills and colorful small houses, together form a quiet and beautiful European country style, full of small bridges, flowing water, people's rustic The country style is like being in the water town of Jiangnan, but the houses here are more charming, and the pastoral scene in the fairy tale world. Although the windmill village in the off-season is cold and bleak, there are very few tourists, which is extraordinarily quiet and peaceful.

Zaanse Schans Windmill Village | A beautiful fairytale village in the Netherlands, the drunken windmill and chalet in Monet's oil painting
In Amsterdam, you see an absolutely free and diverse world, while in the countryside, It is their soul. You will see a completely different world in the village of Sans Anse (Netherlands Windmill Village), which is only 2 km away from Eminem.
Here, you see the quiet country style, the fairy-tale beautiful windmill world, is a simple and elegant residential wooden house. At the entrance, you can see beautiful windmills from afar. In the 17th century, the most rapid period of economic development, the windmill once provided a strong source of power for the Dutch, and thus became one of the symbols of the Netherlands.

Zaandam and Zaandijk: A Journey Through Time and Tradition
#100waysoftravel #netherlands #zaandam #couplestrip
Zaandam and its neighboring village, Zaandijk, boast a rich history rooted in the industrial revolution and maritime trade. Established in the 17th century, Zaandam became an essential hub for shipbuilding and trade, primarily due to its proximity to the Zaan River. The region was a thriving center for the production of windmills, wooden shoes, and traditional Dutch goods. Zaandijk is particularly famous for its iconic green wooden houses that reflect the architectural style of the Zaan region, known as “Zaan Style.” These houses, characterized by their sloping roofs and elaborate gables, date back to the 18th and 19th centuries and stand as a testament to the area’s historical craftsmanship.
The architecture in Zaandam and Zaandijk is a delightful blend of historical charm and modern convenience. The most famous landmark, the Zaanse Schans, is an open-air museum that showcases traditional Dutch windmills, wooden houses, and artisan workshops. The area features well-preserved examples of Zaan architecture, including the charming green-painted houses of Zaandijk, which offer a picturesque view that has been immortalized in numerous paintings and photographs. The unique buildings not only highlight the region’s rich history but also serve as a reminder of the innovative spirit of the Dutch during the golden age of trade and industry.
Zaandam and Zaandijk are conveniently located just north of Amsterdam, making them easily accessible for day-trippers and tourists. The two towns are situated along the Zaan River, surrounded by lush greenery and scenic waterways, providing a beautiful contrast to the bustling city life of Amsterdam. Visitors can explore the quaint streets and charming canals, immersing themselves in the serene atmosphere and picturesque landscapes.
In terms of local commerce, Zaandam and Zaandijk are known for their traditional Dutch goods, including cheese, wooden shoes, and artisanal crafts. The region is dotted with shops and markets where visitors can purchase authentic souvenirs and local delicacies, such as Dutch licorice and stroopwafels. Many of these shops are housed in the charming wooden buildings that characterize the area, enhancing the overall experience of shopping in this historic setting.
Transportation from Amsterdam to Zaandam is straightforward and efficient. The towns are well connected by train, with direct services running from Amsterdam Central Station to Zaandam, making the journey take approximately 20 minutes. Additionally, local buses and ferries provide convenient options for reaching Zaandijk and the surrounding attractions. The proximity to Amsterdam, combined with the unique historical and cultural offerings of Zaandam and Zaandijk, makes these towns an ideal destination for those looking to explore a different side of Dutch heritage.

My rating: 4.5 ⭐️ out of 5!
| Zaanse Schans Windmill Village. 💚Walking on the small road in Zaanse Schans Windmill Village, it seems that time has slowed down here. The windmill in front of you is slowly turning, the wooden shoes are gently knocking under your feet, and the whisper of the wind blowing over the field brings the whispers of cattle and sheep🐄
🖼️The windmill village is only a short 18-minute drive from Amsterdam, but it seems to be another world. Although there are many tourists, this does not affect the feeling of the purity and beauty of this land. The magnificence of the windmill, the tradition of wooden shoes, and the vastness of the field are all frozen into a painting in the lens
📸Aerial photography is also taken, and refrigerator stickers are also bought✅ Although today's itinerary is compact, we still have to drive for ten hours to Zurich, Switzerland, but this short stay is still worth it
✌🏻Relaxation in a hurry, eternity in a short time, is a beautiful part of the journey

🇳🇱Netherlands Amsterdam Windmill Village + Leisurely City Guide 🏙️
The Netherlands is a great place for girls to go solo! Everywhere is like a fairy tale scene, and it is generally safe. You may encounter some drug users and drunk people, but there are still many people in the city at 11 o'clock in the evening. It is also very convenient to use the tram in the city.
1️. Itinerary
DAY1 Amsterdam Central-Zaandam (Lego Town)-Zaanse Schans (Windmill Village)-Red Light District
DAY2 Giethoorn
DAY3 Bloemenmarket (Floating Flower Market)-Van Gogh Museum-Amsterdam National Museum-Canal District-Albert Cuypstraat Market-Go to Rotterdam
2️. Recommended attractions
Zaandam Lego Town
The round-trip ticket we bought on the NS app is 7.4 euros, which is 1 euro cheaper than the self-service ticket machine. The ticket includes a trip to Lego Town, which is very cost-effective. After checking in at the hotel in the morning, go to Amsterdam Central Station central station to scan the code and set off to take pictures through Lego Town. The town is not big and we finished it quickly.
🏕️Windmill Village Zaandijk/Zaanse Schans
After visiting Lego Town, continue to take the train to the windmill village, which takes more than ten minutes. Follow the crowd after leaving the train station. You can see windmills when you cross the bridge. Everywhere looks like an oil painting. We also watched the sunset of the windmill village. 🌄For dinner, we ate at an Italian restaurant (p9). It was very atmospheric by the river in the windmill village and the decoration inside was also very beautiful (p8).
🚥Red light district (p10):
You can’t take pictures of the window girls in the red light district. 📷The little pink elephant Casa Rosso performance is 65 euros per ticket. You can queue up at the door to buy tickets on the spot.
🌷Floating flower market
As a tulip kingdom, you must check in. The super cheap refrigerator magnets are so beautiful!
🏫Van Gogh & National Museum
You need to book tickets in advance. We were too unplanned to book in advance, so we didn’t go in at all. 🤡There are so many Miffy bunnies in the souvenir shop! But the Miffy bunny at the airport seems to be cheaper, you can take a look when you fly in
🚴Canal District
It is very comfortable to sunbathe along the river, and many boats pass by the canal. There are bicycles full of flowers on the bridge, which is suitable for taking pictures!
🤹♀️Albert Cuyp Market
Highly recommend the traditional market! We ate raw herring, kibbeling and pickles (there are some sashimi that I can't name). We also ate freshly baked waffles, which were great. Walking around just happened to check in all the traditional Dutch snacks
