Rock paintings are pictures carved and painted on rocks by ancient humans, a huge epic solidified in rocks. With similar themes and different artistic styles, they are distributed in more than 150 regions in more than 70 countries on five continents, making them a global cultural phenomenon. Rock paintings first appeared in the late Paleolithic period, reached their peak in the Neolithic period, and gradually declined in the Bronze and Iron Ages. As relics of early human activities before the emergence of writing, rock paintings reveal the lifestyle, economic life, spiritual pursuits, and aesthetic tendencies of human society in ancient times, as well as the relationship between humans and nature. They are a means for prehistoric humans to reflect, explain, and transform the world, and the earliest pictorial records of humans' struggle for survival.
The Yinchuan World Rock Art Museum is located in the Helan Mountain Rock Art Scenic Area. It is a museum dedicated to rock art, with a collection of rock art masterpieces from 200 rock art sites in 30 countries on five continents. Through these pictures with primitive, regional, and ethnic characteristics, you can feel the vivid artistic vitality passed down to us by ancient ancestors.
The exhibition area of the Yinchuan World Rock Art Museum is divided into the preface hall, central hall, world rock art exhibition area, Chinese rock art exhibition area, Helan Mountain rock art exhibition area, rock art research and exchange area, special exhibition area, and rock art information archive area. The museum displays representative rock art works from around the world, including rubbings, photos, objects, and replicas, totaling 547 pieces. These exhibits showcase the wonderful content of more than 200 rock art sites in 30 countries around the world, covering rock art exhibitions from Africa, Europe, America, Asia, and Oceania.
The Yinchuan World Rock Art Museum is not only a place to display rock art but also dedicated to popular science education and cultural exchange. Through rich exhibition content and interactive experiences, visitors can gain an in-depth understanding of the historical background and cultural significance of rock art. In addition, the museum has a research and exchange area to promote in-depth rock art research and academic exchange. In December 2020, the Yinchuan World Rock Art Museum was selected as one of the fourth batch of national second-class museums, further proving its important contribution to rock art protection and research.

The Yinchuan World Rock Art Museum is the first stop of the Helan Mountain Rock Art Scenic Area. You can take a shuttle bus on the third floor to Helan Post to visit the Helankou Rock Art Site or go to the Han Meilin Art Museum.
