🇱🇰 Two UNESCO World Heritage Sites You Should Not Miss in Sri Lanka
The ancient city of Sigiriya and Dambulla cave temple are two of the eight UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka that you should not miss if you visit Sri Lanka. The two sites are just 20 km apart so it is possible to visit both attractions within the same day. However, I recommend spending at least a few days to explore these sites at a more leisurely pace. Check out the three-day itinerary below!
Day 1:
Arrive at Colombo International Airport Ratmalana. Rest for a night in Negombo.
Day 2:
Travel to Sigiriya. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple on the way to Sigiriya.
The most convenient way to reach Sigiriya is by hiring a private car. The cheapest way is by taking local buses. We took 2 different local buses from Negombo and got off at Dambulla. It was fun albeit slightly inconvenient as we got to experience it the local way. From Dambulla you can either take a public bus or hire a tuk-tuk to Sigiriya.
Day 3:
Visit Sigiriya Lion Rock early in the morning. Hire a jeep ride to Minneriya National Park in the afternoon.
[Must-Visit Attractions]
1. Sigiriya Lion Rock: An ancient fortress built on top of a rock column
2. Dambulla Cave Temple: The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in the island
3. Minneriya National Park: Within an hour drive from Sigiriya, the park houses hundreds of Asian elephants which thrive on the Minneriya Tank.
[Must-Try Food]
There are plenty of roadside restaurants along Sigiriya Road and Hotel Road. Some of them offer a good view of the Sigiriya Lion Rock.
1. Hotel Sigiriya serves good buffet dinner.
2. Sigiriya Wew Thawulla Restaurant offers amazing views of the Lion Rock.
3. Sigiriya Lion Face serves good kattu with a stunning view of Lion Rock as a backdrop.
[Accommodation ]
We stayed in Hotel Sigiriya 2 km away from the entrance of Sigiriya Lion Rock with amazing views of the Lion Rock from the outdoor pool area.
📍 Hotel Sigiriya
Hotel Road, Sigiriya, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka
[Photo Spots]
1. Outdoor pool area of Hotel Sigiriya offers clear views of the Lion Rock. There is even a telescope by the pool for us to get a better view of the rock!
2. The journey to the top of the Lion Rock offers amazing views along the way.
3. Take pictures of the Lion Rock near the site entrance before the ascent to capture the full view of the rock.
[Tips]
1. Dambulla Cave Temple:
Before entering the temple we had to remove our shoes so wearing socks is recommended. Remember to wear modest clothing that covers your knee and shoulder while visiting sacred sites. There are lots of street sellers outside the temple selling sarong. It is also possible to rent a sarong to cover your knees before entering the temple.
2. Sigiriya Lion Rock:
Be prepared to have a workout while visiting the Lion Rock as there are around 1200 steps of stairs to climb throughout the visit. Wear comfortable shoes!

Sri Lanka - Sigiriya Rock
Sri Lanka's Sky Palace was listed as a World Heritage Site as early as 1982. Looking from the bottom up, it feels very spectacular. After actually climbing to the top, I have to admire the uncanny workmanship designed by the people at that time. It is really amazing to have a bird's-eye view of the entire Sri Lankan scenery from a high place. People keep coming back!

sigiriya Rock Lion roxxx me
yeay!! im so close to this huge-mammoth-gigantic rock that i’ve been eyeing since i saw a video clip of Duran Duran. it’s just amazing to witness human imagination harmonizes with the nature (the rock was formed from magma of an extinct volcano & reaches 200m high.
when King Kashyapa transfomed this rock into his palace, fortress, garden & ultimately his administrative capital during his reign (477 – 495 AD), it has becoming a magnificent legacy during his time
i am still amazed when i picture themassive construction of the city on top of the rock. how do these people drag all the building materials to the top? it must be hard time and tiring.

The past and present of Sigiriya.
Sigiriya is a real palace built on an orange-red boulder in Sigiriya, Sri Lanka. It is a natural wonder like Ayers Rock in Australia, and an unimaginable man-made miracle that amazes every visitor. It is known as the eighth wonder of the world, one of the vertices of Sri Lanka's "Cultural Triangle," and one of the world's precious heritage sites protected by UNESCO.
The boulder is 200 meters high. From a distance, Sigiriya looks like a lion lying on the flat ground northeast of Dambulla. The top of the rock is flat and looks like a lion. The lion's head has weathered and fallen off, leaving only the lion's body under the giant rock, with a garden palace built 200 meters high on its back. It was buried in the jungle for several centuries until it was discovered by the British hunter Bell in the mid-19th century, and has since attracted the attention of the archaeological community. It includes a moat, a garden square, a huge rock, and a brick-red aerial castle built on top of the rock.
It is said that this heavenly palace was built by King Kashyapa (447-495 AD) of the Moriya dynasty. King Kashyapa killed his father to ascend the throne. To escape the revenge of his half-brother Moggallana, he built this fortress palace with more military defense than ruling significance along the mountain for 18 years. Sigiriya is about 200 meters high, with a smooth and square stone surface, and is very imposing. A dynasty that lasted only seven years was built on this giant rock. The top of the mountain covers an area of about two hectares, and an aerial garden was built in a very luxurious way. Even today, it is a huge project. In the garden, there are the king's stone throne, water reservoir, banquet hall, council hall, king's bedroom, etc. The scale of the architecture at that time was incredible.
Now, all that is left for visitors to see is a giant rock, the front paws of two giant stone lions, and the ruins of various palaces. On the ruins of the houses, Sri Lankan macaques with "black ears" are active, adding a touch of life to the scenic area. Climbing the metal stairs built along the cliff to the top of the rock, the view suddenly opens up. Looking far into the distance, the jungle is endless and green, and the entire capital site is in full view. You can only imagine the grandeur and luxury of the past in your mind.
The entire site park is well maintained and clean, and wild macaques roam in groups. It is also one of the must-see attractions when traveling to Sri Lanka.

🌟Highlights:
🇱🇰 Sigiriya is located on the "Lion Rock," about 170 km northeast of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. It was built during the reign of King Kashyapa in the 5th century.

[Two] The boulder is 200 meters high. From a distance, Lion Rock is a boulder lying on the flat ground northeast of Dambulla. The top is flat and looks like a lion. The lion's head has weathered and fallen off, leaving only the lonely lion's body. There is a garden palace 200 meters high, which was not discovered until the 19th century when it was buried in the jungle.
👍Most recommended:
The ancient city of Sigiriya was officially proposed to be listed as the eighth wonder of the world. The ancient city of Sigiriya is the best-preserved city center in Asia for thousands of years. The traditional architectural style of Sri Lanka is fully displayed here: the garden under the shade of trees, the path, and the water pavilion are integrated; the symmetrical and asymmetrical architectural elements complement each other; the ever-changing plane, axis, and radius design are perfectly combined.
📝Tips:
[One] You need to climb the mountain, and some areas are steep. It takes about 2.5 hours.
[Two] There are wild animals on the mountain.

The first stop of the wonderful journey in Sri Lanka
Yesterday, we flew more than 7 hours from Shanghai to Sri Lanka, exchanged currency at the airport (we exchanged US dollars from Beijing, and then used US dollars to exchange rupees, which is more cost-effective) and then bought a SIM card, 20G for 1400 rupees, 30G for 1800 rupees, then we went back to the hotel, we didn't even eat dinner and just went to sleep.
The first stop, we came to St. Mary's Church, sincerely praying for our trip to go smoothly
Then we went to a place where you can experience riding an elephant. The entrance fee is 15 US dollars, and a round of elephant riding is 20 US dollars. The place is very original, and the elephants can rest by the stream.
Then we climbed Lion Rock before the sun set. The guide said there were more than 1200 steps in total, and it was not difficult to climb up. Both the elderly and children went up. We finally took many beautiful photos, but the sun set very quickly, and it felt like we didn't take many photos before we couldn't see the sun.
The itinerary of the first stop was a bit tight, but it was also very enjoyable😁

🇱🇰 Sigiriya lion Rock, the First UNESCO world heritage site in Sri Lanka
#freehotelstay
Type "Sri Lanka" in Google images and I'm sure the first few images you see will be the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock. Inscribed in 1982 as one of the first UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Lion Rock is an ancient rock fortress built in the fifth century which stands around 200 m high.
The Sigiriya Fortress has an interesting history. It was built by King Kasyapa, the second king of the royal Moriya dynasty of Sri Lanka. He was not the rightful heir and acquired the throne by rebelling against his father. He built the palace right on top of the rock column to avoid potential attacks from his brother Moggallana, the rightful heir to the throne. He was defeated by Moggallana 22 years after ascending to the throne. The fortress was used as a monastery after Kasyapa’s death till it was abandoned in the 14th century. A few hundreds years later, it was discovered by British Army Major Jonathan Forbes in 1831.
Be prepared to have a workout while visiting the Lion Rock as there are around 1200 steps of stairs to climb throughout the visit. The amount of time taken to reach the top depends on your fitness level and also the crowd. We took about 2 hours to explore the site.
A foreign adult ticket costs USD 30 while a foreign child ticket costs USD 15. Tickets can be bought online from the official website or from the ticket office onsite. The site opens from 6.30 am to 5.30 pm every day. It is better to arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon (last entry at 4 pm) to avoid the scorching sun.

🌟The natural environment here is quiet and peaceful, with lush trees and clear bird songs, as if walking into a fairy tale story of the green wilderness.
🌟Lion's Paw Platform is a great place for taking photos, where friends from all over the world check in.
🌟I didn't make it to the top of the cliff. When I was looking at the murals in the iron cage before, I almost lost my life. My fear of heights had already made my legs weak. This is also a regret of my trip to Lanka.

📌📝Attention tips:
1️⃣At Lion Rock, there will be many "kind-hearted people" who are particularly enthusiastic about coming to help you. All these kind-hearted people charge a fee, so as soon as you enter Lion Rock, there will be many little black people who come to chat with you enthusiastically. You can choose to ignore them directly, of course, if you don't mind giving a little tip (about 2,000 rupees), you can let them help you up. The way up is still quite scary for acrophobics.
2️⃣Ladies are advised not to wear skirts as the mountain climbing along the way is steep and skirts may easily expose. It is also recommended not to wear flip-flops as there are many steps to climb, some of which are quite steep.
3️⃣Sunscreen and mosquito repellent must be prepared in advance. In addition to the strong sunlight, there are still many mosquitoes 🦟 in Langkawi!
4️⃣Before entering the scenic area, there will be a bag inspection. They will tear off the paper label on the mineral water to avoid bringing garbage into the scenic area. They are particularly good at protecting this world heritage site!
4️⃣Bring water, definitely bring water. There's no water for sale at Lion Rock, and climbing the mountain is tiring and can make you thirsty. Bring some water just in case.

Sri Lanka's Lion Rock, the ruins of an ancient palace on a huge rock!
📍Address: Sigiriya Lion Rock (https://maps.app.goo.gl/57BckJ2DxwSAtSLi9?g_st=ic)
🔸Features: The ruins of a palace on the top of a huge rock. Now only the foundation of the palace can be seen, and the complete building cannot be seen. But it is absolutely surprising to imagine that there once was a great palace in such a high place!
Looking down from the top, you can see the lush urban landscape of Sri Lanka, which is very primitive and a wonderful landscape💛
Before climbing to the top, you will first pass by the entrance of the palace, which is the famous lion's paw. The lion's paw is also huge! Standing in front of the lion's paw is amazing~

Sigiriya Lion Rock Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Cūḷavaṃsa, this area was a large forest, then after storms and landslides it became a hill and was selected by King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) for his new capital. He built his palace on top of this rock and decorated its sides with colourful frescoes. On a small plateau about halfway up the side of this rock he built a gateway in the form of an enormous lion. The name of this place is derived from this structure; Sīnhāgiri, the Lion Rock (an etymology similar to Sinhapura, the Sanskrit name of Singapore, the Lion City).
The capital and the royal palace were abandoned after the king's death. It was used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century.[3] Sigiriya today is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved examples of ancient urban planning
