Such a beautiful, historical place right in the center of a busy city. I love how there are old apartments overlooking the temple. Such a unique contrast.

Beautiful temple with serene atmosphere
Address: No. 170, Anyuan Road, Putuo District
The temple was built between 1911 and 1918 in the style of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), with symmetrical halls and courtyards, upturned eaves, and bright saffron yellow walls, making it readily identifiable.
Inside, the centerpiece is a 1.9-meter-high white jade Buddha, which was installed after a monk brought it from Burma to Zhejiang Province in 1882. This seated Buddha, encrusted with jewels, is said to weigh about one thousand kilograms.
You can visit this temple every day from 8am to 16:30 pm.
Take Metro Line 13 and get off at Jiangning Road Station. Leave from exit 4 and then walk southward for about five minutes to the temple.

Inside Jade Buddha Temple - Shanghai
#passionpassport
Although the history of the Jade Buddha Temple is not very long, the old-time and classical architectural style makes it unique and inimitable in this modern city. Devajara Hall, Mahavira Hall and the Jade Buddha Tower make up the main structure of the temple and at sides are the Kwan-yin Dian Hall, the Amitabha Dian Hall, the Zen Tang Hall, the Dining-Room and the Recumbent Buddha Hall. The Sitting Buddha is in the Jade Buddha Tower and the Recumbent Buddhas are in the Recumbent Buddha Hall. More than 7,000 Dazang sutras are kept in the Jade Buddha Tower; these are all the inestimable culture relics.
The Jade Buddha Temple is a good place to go whether you are a Buddhist or not, the peaceful and transcendent atmosphere adds a kind of richness to our busy modern society. #shanghai #passionpassport #travel Inspiration

Jade Buddha Temple
Closest subway station: Changshou road (line 7) + ~10-15mins walk.
What to expect- Quite a gorgeous temple!
It is a very short visit though (About 30mins or so).
It is quite close to another temple (Jing’an temple).
I rode a bike from Jade temple to the other.
I’d recommend visit both on the same day.
I’d say it’s a fun visit but not a “must”.
If you have time, go for it!

National Day Shanghai Good Place to Go - Free, Less Crowded Near Shanghai Railway Station, Two Free Tourist Attractions: NO.1: Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple
This temple feels bigger than the City God Temple near Shanghai Bund, and it is very sincere! Entry to the Jade Buddha Temple is free, no tickets required, just walk in. Incense is 25 yuan, and there is free tea available inside the temple (recommended barley tea), as well as vegetarian noodles, for around 20 yuan. There is also a window selling mooncakes, and you can ask for a hand-strung rosary (a bit expensive).
May Buddha bless those with a connection, sincere worship, and a good place to rest.
NO.2 Shanghai Textile Museum
Very few people, a niche check-in point for Hanfu. Although the horse-face skirt themed exhibition on the third floor has ended, the second floor is still worth seeing, for example, it provides a detailed introduction to late Qing Dynasty clothing, accessories (scent pouches), Shanghai textile factory development history, and astronaut suits.

Sea Zen Forest - Zhiyue Jade Buddha Temple.
It was raining when I arrived, and to my surprise, there was no entrance fee.
The place is quite large and seems to require more maintenance.
The area is larger than Jing'an Temple, but the buildings are newer.
It feels like the expansion was too fast, and upon closer inspection, it lacks elegance.
It feels like something is missing from the roads,
like something is missing from the incense burners,
like something is missing from the statues.
However, the statues inside are grand and magnificent,
and there are many shops selling Buddha-related items.
Each hall has a shop next to it.
There is also a tea-drinking area on the second floor, with an option for a terrace seat.
The first floor also has outdoor seating, which fits well (pun intended).
In the quiet space of the temple, it feels like an independent space.
This visit was just a quick look around,
although it was raining, it didn't affect my self-service tour.
The interlaced halls and additional decorations
provide many angles and styles for photography.
I didn't spend any money or eat any vegetarian food,
I've heard that the vegetarian food here is famous, maybe someone else will try it.
It's a short walk from the subway station exit.
Walking in the rain, leaving my wet footprints,
waiting for the memories to evaporate.

The Jade Buddha Temple

The Jade Buddha Temple was founded in 1882 with two jade Buddha statues imported to Shanghai from Myanmar by sea. These were a sitting Buddha (1.95 meters tall, 3 tons), and a smaller reclining Buddha representing the Buddha's death. The temple now also contains a much larger reclining Buddha made of marble, donated from Singapore.
Would be great visit if there was not so much else to see - but enjoyable none the less.

Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple
Every first and fifteenth day of the lunar month is the time to visit, to worship Buddha, eat vegetarian meals, chat with Master Meow, and remember to touch the pink toad for good fortune and luck
Is stamp collecting trendy now ? The queue for stamp collecting in the temple can go round and round...
Basically, there are always a lot of people queuing for vegetarian meals in the temple every day, so we usually walk out the main gate to Shaanxi North Road to 'Jade Buddha Temple Vegetarian'. There is a sign for 'Jade Buddha Temple Vegetarian', and there aren't as many people queuing here. They offer several meal sets and healthy hot pots, and the stir-fried noodles are also very tasty. Many people come here for a work lunch on weekdays, so there are quite a few people, but definitely not as many as inside the temple.

Why do the unemployed in Shanghai like to flock to the Jade Buddha Temple?
The Jade Buddha Temple is one of the three great ancient temples of Shanghai, along with Jing'an Temple and Longhua Temple. It is located on Anyuan Road in the bustling Putuo District, surrounded by roads and residential buildings, truly a rare sanctuary in the midst of the hustle and bustle!
A netizen living in Zhongshan Park said that when he was unemployed, he liked to go to the Jade Buddha Temple to pray because it houses a jade reclining Buddha, and 'reclining Buddha' sounds like 'offer', right?
After some research, I found that the Jade Buddha Temple, established in 1882, was named after two jade Buddhas brought back from Burma by the monk Huigen during his travels to Southeast Asia, one sitting and one reclining. Indeed, the pronunciation of 'reclining Buddha' is somewhat similar to the English word 'offer', which explains why some people think of coming here to seek good fortune.
Moreover, the division of roles among Shanghai's temples is quite clear in people's minds. For example, Jing'an Temple, with the word 'peace' in its name, is considered suitable for praying for peace, while Longhua Temple, with the grand 'hua' in its name, is considered suitable for seeking fame and fortune. The Jade Buddha Temple, with the 'jade' in its name, symbolizes both wealth and good marriage prospects, making it suitable for praying for wealth and marriage. For those without a stable income, the desire for wealth is undoubtedly more urgent. Furthermore, since last June, the Jade Buddha Temple has been free to enter without a ticket or reservation except on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, so there is no financial expenditure involved in visiting, naturally making it more popular.
Lastly, the scenery inside the Jade Buddha Temple is indeed beautiful. With its strict layout, architecture that respects the old while blending the new, and an atmosphere of tranquility amidst the noise, it is suitable for helping people alleviate their anxious emotions. For those who are in a low period, this is undoubtedly a good remedy, because the more one is in adversity, the more one needs to remain calm and polish one's resilience, thus accumulating strength for a timely rebound in the future!
Tagore said, 'The world afflicts me with pain, but I reply with songs.' Life is not easy, but I hope everyone can face it positively~

On the fifteenth day of the first month of the Year of the Dragon, blessings are sought at the Jade Buddha Temple
The Jade Buddha Temple, located in the bustling urban area of Shanghai, is named for the jade Buddha statues it primarily enshrines. As it belongs to the Linji school of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, where Chan meditation is practiced, it is also known as the Jade Buddha Zen Temple. It is one of the top ten tourist attractions in Shanghai and is referred to as a pure land in the midst of chaos due to its tranquil setting amidst the hustle and bustle. Since 2014, due to the initiation of historically large-scale renovations, the architectural regulation of the Jade Buddha Zen Temple has been upgraded from the original 'residential-style' temple to the pattern of a 'traditional Jiangnan-style monastery'.

The landmark light of the magic city falls on your face, and the new life immediately has hope
🙏 Where to go at the beginning of the new year? You can't miss here. We came to the Jade Buddha Temple not far from home, this temple full of good expectations, pray for the new year, wish for the good, and cleanse the soul. Because it happens to be offending Taisui for two consecutive years, so I hope to give myself a good blessing. Therefore, I felt a different courtyard quiet and popular incense. When the light falls on your face, the new life will immediately have hope.

🙏 New Year's blessing activities are underway. Every time I walk into it, there will be a feeling of tranquility. Here will give you different feelings at different times. It will be very lively here at the end of the year and the beginning of the new year. People will come here to pray; it is quiet and quiet on weekdays, making people calm as water.
🌟 Courtyard quiet
Walking into the courtyard will give people a sense of seclusion away from the world. This is a Song Dynasty-style temple building with a rigorous layout, covering an area of about 11.6 acres and a building area of 8856 square meters. The trees and buildings are staggered, and the environment is comfortable and quiet.
🌟 Good expectations
People come here just for a moment of tranquility and expectations for a good life, silently praying for good weather, peace and satisfaction in everything. It is quite spiritual to seek wealth and marriage here, and the incense is relatively strong due to the city.
🌟 Good luck in the past years
This year, the zodiac signs are rabbit, horse, chicken, dragon, and rat can thank Taisui, and next year the zodiac signs are dragon, dog, rabbit, and cow can worship Taisui. I hope to go smoothly in this year, which is also a good expectation for a good life and the new year.
🙏 In the new year, there is always more expectation for the next year. Although this is a form, happiness not only depends on prayer, but also on our hands to create. You can come and visit when you have time, leave your footprints, and work harder next year.

Shanghai Ancient Temple | Jade Buddha Temple
📕【History】
In the eighth year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1882), Master Huigen of Putuo Mountain went to Wutai, visited Emei, entered Tibet, went to India, and passed Myanmar after worshipping Buddha. With the sponsorship of local overseas Chinese, he opened the mountain to get jade, carved five jade Buddhas, and invited them back to Putuo Mountain. When passing through Shanghai, he left a seated Buddha and a reclining Buddha, and built a temple in Jiangwan Town for worship, called the Jade Buddha Temple. In the seventh year of the Republic of China (1918), the temple was destroyed by war, so it was rebuilt at the current site, and the new temple was renamed "Jade Buddha Zen Temple".
