🇰🇷 Exploring Seongeup Folk Village: A Step Back in Time
#koreatrip
Seongeup Folk Village, nestled on Jeju Island, offers a glimpse into traditional Korean life with its well-preserved structures, dating back to the Joseon Dynasty. The village showcases thatched roofs, stone walls, and stone statues, reflecting the region's unique culture. Historically, Seongeup was a center of governance and culture in Jeju, with many local residents still living in the village.
We visited in the late evening, which gave us the chance to walk through the village and admire its beauty, though no performances or folk activities were happening at that time. Still, the atmosphere was rich with history and charm.

Seongeup Folk Village - old style Jeju
#traveldiaries
As you travel across Jeju Island from the northern side to the southern side, you may come across Seongeup Folk Village, where traditional Jeju-style houses are still home to many residents. Unlike the traditional *hanok* houses found on the mainland, Jeju’s traditional houses are built with stone walls and roofs made of silver grass, giving them a distinct and unique appearance. There are many cafés in the village where you can relax, enjoy the view, or simply grab a takeaway coffee and stroll through the village to admire its beauty.

It’s the filming location for a very famous Korean drama. We got a very knowledgeable volunteer guide who bought us around and explained to us the history of the area. Yes, I admit it is small and villages like this are dotted throughout Korea, but seeing as it is free, it’s worth a short trip to take in the sights. They also see some local products which the missus or the elderly may like.

To experience the folk culture of Jeju in South Korea, the best place to go is the Chenghuang Folk Village. Under the Halla Mountain, the village completely preserved the original appearance of the ancient village. In order to better preserve the tradition, there are now residents living here of course, they will also receive subsidies from the Korean government. Now this visit to the village has become one of the standard itineraries for Jeju Island tourism.
In the early days, the aborigines of Jeju Island were relatively poor. The stone walls used by local villagers to block the wind were taken from the ground and built with black lava stones left after the volcanic eruption. The symbol of Jeju Island - the statue of the stone father-in-law is also everywhere here. I heard that it has also been the location of "Da Jang Geum".
