Garden
Sankeien (三溪園) is a spacious Japanese style garden in southern Yokohama which exhibits a number of historic buildings from across Japan. There is a pond, small rivers, flowers and wonderful scrolling trails that make you think you are in Kyoto rather than Yokohama. The vast classical Japan garden covering over 175,000 square meters, renowned for its seasonal beauty.
The garden was built by Hara Sankei and opened to the public in 1904. Among the historic buildings exhibited in the park are an elegant daimyo (feudal lord) residence, several tea houses and the main hall and three storied pagoda of Kyoto's old Tomyoji Temple.
From Yokohama Station
Take bus number 8 or 148 from the station's east exit to Sankeien-Iriguchi (30-35 minutes, 220 yen one way, frequent departures) from where Sankeien is another five minutes by foot. The same bus lines can also be boarded at Sakuragicho Station (20-25 minutes, 220 yen one way).
From Negishi Station
Take the JR Negishi Line to Negishi Station from where it is a ten minute bus ride by line number 58, 99 or 101 to Honmoku (220 yen one way, frequent departures). From there, Sankeien is another 5-10 minutes by foot. Alternatively, you can walk from Negishi Station to Sankeien in about 30-45 minutes or take a taxi (about 1500 yen one way)

The rich culture of Japan
Been to Sankeien Garden multiple times. The central pond is one of the garden’s main visual draws, but you could spend several hours wandering around its winding trails and discovering the many small waterfalls, streams, ponds, footbridges, and bamboo groves in the garden. Sankeien is especially popular in spring for the cherry blossoms – don’t forget to try the cherry blossom-flavoured ice cream – and in fall for the gorgeous maples and ginkgo trees.

One of my favorite parks for events or just to relax

One of my two favorite gardens in Japan. I did a day trip to Yokohama from Tokyo and almost skipped this place because I had had a full day and to be honest, this garden is kind of out of the way - about an hour bus ride from the main Yokohama attractions.
If you seek a peaceful respite in the middle of a bustling Yokohama, Sankeien will grant you such peace.
I came on a Wednesday afternoon around 3.00pm, and I pretty much had the entire park to myself.

Japan Travel|A Different Yokohama from What You Saw
🌈Highlights:
Stayed in Yokohama for only two days
But I spent an entire day in this park
It exceeded my expectations with its exquisite details
Calling it a park is an understatement; it's more like a 'Historical Architecture Museum'
The buildings in the park are cultural heritage collected from various places
The fusion of architecture and nature is perfectly presented here
It's cherry blossom season now
There are quite a few local tourists
But I still think this is my favorite spot in this Japan trip
Sitting in the park's tea house
Having a simple bowl of soba noodles
Listening to the sound of the stream flowing slowly
It's the most pleasant moment

Sankeien is a large traditional Japanese garden in Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Utilizing the natural contours of the site to advantage, the garden, which spreads across 175,000 square meters of land, is filled with seasonal flowers and other foliage and boasts numerous ponds and streams.
Set among the natural beauty are 17 historic buildings, including 10 that are designated important national cultural properties.
While Yokohama is more generally known as a port that opened Japan to the world in the late nineteenth century and for its strong influence of Western culture, Sankeien is a bastion of traditional Japanese beauty.
The entrance fee for adult is around 5 euros per person. During the blooming season, it is always crowded. Restaurants and bars inside the compound of park.

Yokohama's Famous Cherry Blossom Gardens.
With a history of over 100 years, the garden was established in the 39th year of the Meiji era (1906) and spans over 170,000 square meters. It is filled with historical buildings that have been relocated from places like Kyoto and Kamakura. The architecture and the surrounding scenery change with the seasons, creating an exceptionally beautiful landscape.
Every year, from the end of March to the beginning of April, the Night of Cherry Blossoms is held.

🌺 Relaxing at Sankeien Garden 🇯🇵

🌼🏵 I had an exciting adventure during our vacation when I visited the lively city of Japan. The spring season transformed the surroundings into a paradise, and walking through Sankeien Garden left us feeling rejuvenated. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery in this tranquil oasis, we were captivated by the breathtaking views that never failed to impress us, making lasting memories.
In 1906, a stunning, classic Japanese garden was meticulously designed by a wealthy silk merchant. During the Meiji era, as religious artifacts faced destruction due to declining official support, this local merchant took it upon himself to rescue these precious treasures from oblivion, bringing them in from various parts of Japan. Today, the grounds boast a magnificent three-story pagoda from Kyoto, as well as a grand feudal lord's residence, alongside numerous other invaluable structures. Visitors can enjoy the garden's beauty in the evening during the enchanting cherry blossom season in April, as well as during the serene Moon Viewing event in September.
The opulent and captivating hideaway has etched a permanent mark in the recesses of my mind. The delight of revisiting and savouring every instant in this exclusive haven is simply unparalleled. 😘🌸🩷#mytravelhacks #historicallandmarks #localguides #familytrip

Yokohama: The Magical Cherry Blossom
#cherryblossom2024
Plum trees are blooming in Japan's second largest city, which indicates the arrival of spring.
The Japanese tradition of Hanami – admiring flowers – goes back to ancient times. At the end of the XX century, the custom of watching cherry blossoms became widespread in the island state. When flowers bloom on plum or cherry trees, it is considered a sign of the onset of spring. After the long winter months, not only the Japanese, but also numerous tourists gather to see the beautiful sight. The trees usually bloom in early March. But if the winter was particularly cold, the trees may bloom in April.
This year, in the second largest Japanese city of Yokohama, plum trees bloomed in early March. Yokohama is a city that hides a lot of amazing places. There are several popular places in the city where people come to specially admire the blooming flowers. These are the banks of the Ooka River, the traditional Japanese-style Sankei garden in the southern part of the city and the Minato Mirai district. In this business district, located near the seaport, you can also see other flowers that decorate the streets as part of the celebration of the arrival of spring. Among the most popular varieties are roses and lilies.
Those who chose the Ooka riverbed for walks will be able to admire the unique views while sitting on the shore or boating. More than 600 trees have been planted along the banks of the riverbed. At night, dozens of lanterns specially illuminate the cherry blossoms, and its petals can be seen on the water surface of the lake. There have been rainy and windy days lately, so the streets are literally covered with petals that look like snow!
What can I say about the cherry blossom period?
Flowering itself is a very beautiful phenomenon, especially at its peak and in clear sunny weather. I was surprised, however, that sakura does not smell at all (or almost at all)! This will be a plus for some, but I missed the scent of spring. The cherry blossom period is a great opportunity to see how the Japanese relax, immerse themselves in this unique atmosphere, try out all kinds of sakura treats that are made only during this period, and generally enjoy the comfortable weather for walking (warm and not very rainy on average). In April, by the way, not only sakura blooms, but also peach, magnolia, camellia, irises, daffodils, tulips, etc. unknown plants to me – in general, flowering in full.

Sankein garden
Wow so good it was a pleasure. Money well spent. Great walks great historic structures the period house exhibit is awesome. Enter from main gate side, at the Cafe buy some food for the fish they are amazing too. Hope the gardens get some grants to increase arborist on staff as the landscape needs some upkeep and investment in many spots, this will enhance the historic structures present and being renovated.
Gorgeous garden. Spent a long time wandering around and marvelling at the various sights. There‘s also a viewing point with an amazing view of the harbour. 900yen entry but more than worth it.

Sankeien is a private garden buikt by Hara Sankei, situated at the Negishi area of southern Yokohama. During autumn, the leaves in the garden will turn red so it is also a very famous spot to enjoy the fall foliage during autumn. There is also a veey old gingko tree which turns yellow during autumn.

Best Autumn Garden must visit
It is a valuable garden where you can enjoy the four seasons unique to Japan where you can enjoy wabi-sabi regardless of the season in the Yokohama area.
There is also a building designated as an important cultural property in the garden, and it is a place where many people can enjoy their holidays in their own way, such as taking pre-wedding photos, taking photos, and painting watercolors.
Personally, I like to visit during the fall foliage season. It is also lit up at night, so it is recommended.
We strongly recommend coming by public transportation. By the way, if you go by bus, you can access it from various places, so we recommend that you check it out on the web or app.
