Sanjusangendo
Officially known as Rengeo-in. It was originally built by Taira no Kiyomori in 1164, during the reign of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, as part of the Hosho-ji Temple complex. Although it was destroyed by fire, the current main hall was rebuilt in 1266. The main hall, which has 33 spaces between its columns, is approximately 125 meters long from north to south and 22 meters wide from east to west. In the center of the hall is a seated statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon crafted by the Kamakura period sculptor Tankei, flanked by 1,000 life-sized standing statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. All the statues inside the hall, including the statues of the Wind God and Thunder God, are designated as National Treasures.

Kyoto National Treasure! The most stunning 1,001 Buddha statues.
1. Sanjusangendo: Kyoto's dazzling treasure
Sanjusangendo, located in the Higashiyama District of Kyoto, was built in 1164 and is a Tendai Buddhist temple in Japan. The main building is rectangular and 120 meters long, and is named after the 33 spaces separated by beams and columns. As a national treasure of Japan, it is one of the most exciting temple buildings in Kyoto.
2. Opening information
- Address: 657 Sanjusangendo-mawari-cho, Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto.
- Open from Monday to Sunday, 09:00 - 17:00, ticket sales stop at 16:30.
3. Ticket price
- Adults 600 yen (about RMB 38).

- Children 300 yen (about RMB 19).
4. Visit requirements
Photography is prohibited in the Buddha Hall, and shoes must be removed when entering to show respect for religious places.
5. Main attractions
- Treasure of the temple: 11-faced, thousand-armed, thousand-eyed Guanyin statue
- The Guanyin statue enshrined in the center of the main hall is 3.3 meters high, with eleven faces and different expressions, lifelike.
- The 42 hands of the main body each hold a Dharma instrument, with beautiful body postures and exquisite carvings.
- The Buddha's light on the top of the head is round and solemn, which is shocking.
- The guardian gods, the wind god and the thunder god, are exaggerated in shape and full of supernatural power. The wind god carries a wind bag on his shoulder, and the thunder god beats the drum on his back, with vivid artistic expression.
- Thousand Guanyin statues and twenty-eight group statues
- There are a thousand Guanyin statues on both sides of the hall, standing with their hands together, and the twenty-eight group statues of the beautiful Guanyin Bodhisattva are in the same hall.
- This batch of Guanyin statues was built during the Kamakura period. Due to a fire, only 124 Buddha statues built during the Heian period were rescued. After 15 years of careful carving by sculptors, 876 statues were rebuilt.
- The Buddha statues are made of cypress wood and lacquered gold. There are a thousand Buddhas and a thousand faces, reflecting the Buddhist doctrine of "all laws are born from the mind".
- Tips
- Visitors take off their shoes and enter the hall. The Buddha statues on the steps are slightly leaning forward, and the golden Buddha statues have a strong aura.
- 124 of them are relics of the Heian period, and the rest were built later. The seated Thousand-Hand Guanyin is a national treasure of Japan and a representative work of Master Zhanqing at the age of 80.
- If you look at the Guanyin statue for a long time, you will get tired. You can focus on the exaggerated and tense 28 group wooden Dharma protectors.
6. Special activities
Every year on January 15th, an archery ceremony "Toshiya" is held in front of Sanjusangendo. The shooter aims and shoots from a distance of 60 meters, inheriting history and promoting culture.

Kansai Travelogue: Kyoto Edition
📆【Travel Strategy】
This trip to Kansai is my first visit to Japan, and I've long heard that Kyoto is the place where Chinese culture is most preserved in Japan, so I made it my first stop.
📆Itinerary:
Day 1: Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama, Nijo Castle;
Day 2: Sanjusangendo, Gion, Hanami Koji, Shijo Kawaramachi
🚗Transportation Strategy:
After arriving at Kansai Airport, take the Haruka train directly to Kyoto, which takes about 80 minutes. There are buses and subways from inside Kyoto to the scenic spots. I joined a one-day tour on the first day to visit the farther spots, and on the second day, I just strolled around the spots accessible by bus.
🌟Highlights of the trip:
1. The small train in Arashiyama offers a breathtaking view during the cherry blossom season, but tickets are hard to get and should be purchased in advance. Car No. 5 has a panoramic sunroof, which is the best for viewing the scenery.
2. Sanjusangendo is impressive, with 1001 statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon enshrined inside. Since photography is not allowed, it's hard to describe the visual impact in words, highly recommended.
3. I ate at a Michelin-starred restaurant called Kawakami, serving kaiseki cuisine. The dishes felt like opening a blind box, but reservations are needed for better restaurants in Kyoto, so it's advisable to plan ahead, or it would be a pity to miss out.
💰Average Spending:
Transportation: Buses and subways start at about 10 RMB, I didn't take a taxi, but I heard they are expensive;
Accommodation: At the end of March during the cherry blossom season, hotel prices generally rise, I booked early at about 500 RMB per night;
Dining: Average ramen shops and rice set meals cost between 1000-1500 yen; barbecue and specialty cuisine are more expensive, usually starting at 4000 yen; drinks can be bought at convenience stores and vending machines for 100-200 yen.
Tickets: Scenic spot tickets are generally between 300-700 yen.
📌Little Tips:
Many restaurants use vending machines for ordering, then you give the ticket to the waiter and find a seat to wait;
Tourist spots generally use cash, it's good to exchange some, or you can withdraw directly from ATMs after arrival, with a fee of about 10 RMB each time;
The local transportation card Icoca can be very convenient for bus rides and can also be used in convenience stores, Apple phones can add a virtual card directly, or you can buy a physical card at the station;

Sanjusangendo
Sanjusangendo is an ancient Japanese architecture, located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto today. It is a temple of the Tendai Sect in Japan, famous for enshrining one thousand Guanyin statues. It is the main hall of the Lotus King Court, a national treasure of Japan, and the most splendid temple architecture in Kyoto. The main building is rectangular, with a length of 120 meters. It is named for the 33 spaces separated by beams and columns in the building. The group scale of wood carvings is very shocking, and the visiting experience is very special! Deep understanding of the meaning of Thousand-Hand Guanyin, you can feel the charm of religious culture without believing in Buddhism.

This very old Buddhist temple is dated back to the 1100s, built by a known Shogun during that time. It is located in Higashiyama, Kyoto. I went there on a weekday so there wasn't much people, but I heard from others that during Saturdays, this place is usually jam-packed with people. So, I suggest you go during weekdays. Entrance is for free, by the way, and the place is open to the public!

There are so many temples in Kyoto. If you want to go shopping, I am afraid I will stay here for a few months.
But here you must come, even if you don't look at the Buddha statue, just take a look at the vermilion cloister here, take a look at the people's shooting range here, and see the red-crowned cranes in the garden, they will not let you Disappointed. The name of the
Thirty-three Hall is derived from the 34 pillars of its main hall. The temple is divided into thirty-three rooms, and there are more than a thousand Guanyin statues. It is also because of the depth of the temple that the long-range festival is held here every January. We visited all the way to see the photos of the long-range festival. Here, it is not just a temple, but more about the convergence and spread of culture. Whether it's a young man who comes here to celebrate archery, or a bandage in the winter, perhaps culture is here.
