Oldest and the Most Iconic
#museums
On our way to Oloron Sainte Marie, we made a night's stop in Pau. The national museum and Chateau de pau are the most iconic of structures in Pau. They date back to the 12th century and have a rich history associated with them over the years. Especially the childhood of Henry the IV. It was his birthplace, and he is credited to be the founder of Bourbon.
The castle complex is huge and there is plenty to see. Even after the destruction during the French revolution, a lot of artefacts and furniture survived. Those are also on display. It even has several well kept gardens. Not to forget, there is ample parking space if you are driving.
This is a place where you absolutely need a guide to be able to appreciate the history. There are signs in english but the experience of doing it on your own doesn't compare with the rich insights you'd get about this place from a guide. If you do make a stop in Pau, this museum and Chateau are not to be missed.
