Indonesia’s iconic Sulfur Crater
Have you been to Ijen, located near Surabaya Indonesia? The big star of the show here is the AMAZING blue fire that glows bright in the dark. Too bad I couldn’t capture it in camera but it’s such a cool sight! It comes from the sulfur gases escaping from the volcano. You might need to wake up super early to catch this dazzling sight, but trust me, it's worth it!
When the sun rises, the views get even more breathtaking. You can see a stunning turquoise lake nestled in the crater of the volcano. And don't forget about the hardworking sulfur miners who brave the tough conditions to collect sulfur from the crater.
Ijen is a magical place full of wonder and adventure, perfect for anyone who loves nature and exciting experiences!

Beware the Blue Fire!
Kawah IJEN is a unique volcano in East Java, Indonesia. Its claim to fame is its gorgeous blue fire, but also its acidic crater lake, and the labour-intensive sulphur mining that takes place there, which is an eye-opener. The climb up Mount Ijen is in itself a torture, but the view at the top is priceless! A stunning aquamarine crater that sputters every now and again! But beware! This beauty emanates toxic gas!

Kawah Ijen (Ijen Crater)
The Ijen volcano complex is a group of composite volcanoes located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency of East Java, Indonesia.
West of Gunung Merapi is the Ijen volcano, which has a one-kilometre-wide (0.62 mi) turquoise-coloured acidic crater lake. The lake is the site of a labour-intensive sulfur mining operation, in which sulfur-laden baskets are carried by hand from the crater floor.
Since National Geographic mentioned the electric-blue flame of Ijen, tourist numbers have increased. The phenomenon has occurred for a long time, but beforehand there was no midnight hiking. A two-hour hike is required to reach the rim of the crater, followed by a 45-minute hike down to the bank of the crater. The blue fire is ignited sulfuric gas, which emerges from cracks at temperatures up to 600 °C (1,112 °F).
To chase the blue fire of Ijen Crater, many tourists climb the mountain at night. Because indeed the best time to watch the blue fire attraction at the top of Mount Ijen is in the early morning before dawn, which is between 02.00 WIB - 03.00 WIB.

IJEN CRATER
The Ijen Crater Tourism Area is included in the Ijen Tourism Park Nature Reserve with an area of 2,560 hectares, including a tourism forest of 92 hectares. Ijen Crater is located at the top of Mount Ijen in the Licin District, Banyuwangi Regency and Klobang District, Bondowoso Regency. Mount Ijen is an active volcano which has an altitude of 2,443 masl above sea level which is located side by side with Mount Raung and Mount Merapi. Ijen Crater is a lake above Mount Ijen which was formed as a result of the eruption of Mount Ijen, making the crater filled with water to form a very amazing crater lake. What is interesting is that this crater is in the middle of the widest caldera on the island of Java with a diameter of 6 km. . The size of the crater itself is about 960 meters x 600 meters with a depth of 200 meters. The crater is located at a depth of more than 300 meters below the caldera wall. In addition, another natural phenomenon found in the Ijen crater that should not be missed is the Blue Fire, which appears in the midst of sulfur mining, and can only be seen in the early morning until early in the morning around 05.00 WIB. There are only two blue fire phenomena in the world, apart from Ijen, only in Iceland. So it's no wonder the existence of the blue fire is so highly sought after by tourists, especially foreign tourists. The Blue Fire phenomenon is what raised the name of Ijen Crater to be so famous, even abroad. Blue Fire or this blue fire appears from the sulfur when it is dark. You can't see this Blue Fire phenomenon other than in Ijen Crater and in Iceland.

So it's no wonder the existence of the blue fire is so highly sought after by tourists, especially foreign tourists. It has a large area and is equipped with adequate facilities. There is a parking lot for visitors who bring vehicles, both two-wheeled and four-wheeled. Public facilities such as bathrooms, toilets and prayer rooms are available. There are also many food stalls in Paltuding. You can also buy some necessary supplies for your climbing ammunition. visitors who arrive early and will climb in the early hours can rent homestays at affordable prices. In addition, there is a large camping ground for nature lovers who want to set up a tent or hammock. Paltuding to Ijen Crater is 3 KM away, which can only be reached on foot. Although the distance is not too far, considering the different terrain conditions and abilities of each person, it generally takes between 2 to 3 hours to reach it. The trekking route to Ijen Crater consists of sandy soil and fine stones with a slope angle varying from 10 to 35 degrees, taken at midnight in a tired physical condition plus a relatively dark situation because it only relies on flashlight lighting, making the journey to Ijen Crater impossible. done quickly. Therefore, for visitors in groups, bringing many women, it is better to take advantage of the services of a local guide, who in fact are sulfur miners who are very familiar with the terrain. If you want to see the blue fire, climbing should be done at 01.00-02.00 in the morning, because the blue fire is clearly visible until 05.00 in the morning or before the sun appears. For safety reasons, climbing to Ijen crater from Paltuding is closed after 14:00, due to the thick smoke and possible wind direction that leads to the hiking trail.

Icy blue fire and sulfur deposits
On the Indonesian island of Java, the Kawah Ijen Volcano boasts two of the world's most extraordinary occurrences. The first is a live solfatara, which produces hot, combustible sulfur fumes. These burn with an electric blue flame as they enter Earth's oxygen-rich atmosphere. Some of the gas condenses in the atmosphere, resulting in molten sulfur flows that burn with an electric blue flame as well. During the day, the flames are difficult to notice, but at night, they brighten the landscape.
A one-kilometer-wide crater lake filled with turquoise-blue water is the second occurrence. The water's color is caused by its high concentration of dissolved metals and excessive acidity. With a pH as low as 0.5, it is the world's largest severely acidic lake. An inflow of hydrothermal waters charged with gases from a heated magma chamber below is the source of its acidity. So don’t fall yourself in the lake. Just enjoy the scenery it’s majestic!

Mind-blown to visit Kawah Ijen 🌋
#indonesiatrip
💙 Kawah Ijen is a volcanic crater lake located in East Java, Indonesia. It's famous for its turquoise-blue waters, which are colored by the high concentration of dissolved sulfur. The crater is also known for its sulfur mining activities, which take place at night under a surreal blue flame.
🚐 The nearest major city to Kawah Ijen is Banyuwangi. From there, you can rent a car, take a tour, or hire a private driver.
🥾 The hike to the crater rim is challenging, involving steep slopes and uneven terrain. It takes approximately 1-2 hours round trip.
🌛To see the blue flame, you'll need to hike down into the crater at night. The intensity of the blue flame can vary depending on the volcanic activity.

The beautifully dangerous Mt Ijen
Known for its blue flames and acidic lake, Mt Ijen is a beauty that cannot be missed if you’re to visit Surabaya.
As someone who actively hates cardio exercises, the climb to the blue flames was much of a challenge considering the sandy slopes and uneven rocks. We started our climb at 2am. It was chilly and super dark, but if you’re lucky you might be able to see the Milky Way. The entire climb took around 3 hours, with around 2 hours 15 min uphill and 45 minutes defending.
The view was worth every bit of sweat and sore leg muscles. It’s mesmerizing to think that nature is capable of producing such a wonder. Folks who hates cardio like me, I do recommend considering their human trolley (otherwise known as the “Lamborghini”) it makes things so much easier

mountaintop volcano in Indonesia is Breathtaking ✨🤩
#indonesiatrip
Second Jen, life must come again! Friends, the journey is not difficult. To reach the mountaintop, you need some physical strength, but you can run slowly. The problem is that if you want to see the blue flames, you must reach the volcano before 4:30am. It takes about 2 hours (2am to start climbing). Don't put too much pressure on yourself, just go down from the mountaintop. The volcano is full of stone roads. You must pay attention to safety and wear the provided mask. The air is toxic! If you don't want to climb the mountain, you can rent someone else to pull the car. Lamborghini can only go to the mountaintop volcano, but it still costs around RM450 (up and down) to escape. It can also be used for a single trip. If you really can't catch up with the blue flames, the scenery at the mountaintop is very special

Indonesia's Ijen Volcano must visit✨🤩
#indonesiatrip
Indonesia's Ijen Volcano, combined with the previous Bromo article, is a deep attack on the Jen volcano. Let's take a look at the first Bromo and Ljen, which are all winding mountain paths. The journey takes over an hour. After arriving, the guide starts looking for Lien's local guide. We purchased two volcanic packages online, which will take three and a half hours to travel from the Bromo Ijen road. On the road, we met Indonesian National Day pedestrians who were in line. After seeing the local customs and customs, we checked into a hotel and suddenly took a rest. The next day, at 00:00, we woke up and started following the guide up the mountain. We had contact and followed the local guide to climb the mountain

Difficult path to stunning Ijen Volcano
Ijen Volcano hike
The difficult paths take you to beautiful destinations.. This is the simplest way to explain the hike. Situated in the East corner of Java, Indonesia, Ijen is famous for the rare natural concept of "blue fire"and I was determined to do this trip. It is close to Banyuwangi but I came here all the way from Kuta in Bali. I started the hike at 2am with a friendly guide. It's a 3km hike of which the first 1km is almost flat and the rest is steep. I huffed and puffed a lot and wanted to take breaks frequently. You have the option of "taxi" or "Lamborghini" which are the carts pulled by people to go to the top and come back. I saw many people often elderly taking that option. I am unaware about the cost.
Once you reach the top (the cone of the volcano) you must take a route down to inside the volcano to see blue fire, smoke and the lake. I was not lucky to see the blue fire with smoke and wind. The views are simply stunning. You must wear a gas mask to go and see the smoke. I spent time there until I saw the beautiful sunrise. Plenty of photo opportunities too. You must hurry to make sure you reach inside the volcano before 5am (sunrise) to witness the best (blue fire if you are lucky). So my guide was pushing me and not taking too many breaks.
The road until the top of the volcano is clear and wide though dusty. But the route down inside the volcano is narrow, rocky and congested. If you come late, you might not reach the bottom before sunrise.
Please use good hiking shoes and hiking poles. Rather than the climb descending is the most difficult as you may slip on the dusty roads. A gas mask is a must and my guide gave it to me. It was very cold at the basecamp so I rented a jacket. But Soon I realized it is needless when you go 10mins of the climb.
You will definitely enjoy it.

“Kawa Ijen”, climbing a volcano at night
“Kawa Ijen” Smelling sulfur, Climbing the volcano at night To see the blue flames and the blue lake
After going to Mount Bromo and walking back from the waterfall in the rain, we continued to another volcano that we couldn’t miss, “Kawa Ijen Volcano”. We spent another 4 hours traveling to our accommodation. We arrived at the accommodation at around 5 pm. But the guide said, “See you at 11:30 pm.” OMG, we barely had a break. From there, we went to here. This trip was really tough.
When the guide picked us up, we traveled for another 1-2 hours and arrived at the starting point to walk up the volcano. The weather was quite cold. We walked up the mountain at 1 am. We walked on a normal slope. We didn’t climb anything. We walked for about 3 hours to reach the crater before we went down to the valley below. The first equipment we need is a gas mask because we will smell sulfur the whole way. The lower we walk, the stronger the smell becomes until it makes it difficult to breathe. And if there is wind, the sulfur dust will increase, making breathing difficult.
Walking down the crater at night is not easy. It's all rocks, narrow paths, rock slides, and it gets harder when people walk up. Everyone should be very careful when walking in this kind of place because if you make a mistake, it can cause a minor to serious accident. And when we got to the bottom, we got to see the burning of sulfur, burning at a very high temperature until it became a blue flame.
.
The smell of sulfur floating around the crater of the volcano indicates that in addition to the blue flames that tourists come to experience, this place is also like a sulfur ore that produces hundreds of kilograms of sulfur every day. That is the origin of one of the riskiest and most dangerous occupations for health, which is the porter occupation. No matter how dangerous it is, porters have to dig up sulfur and carry 80-90 kilograms of sulfur to sell at a price that many people may think is not worth the risk. I want everyone to go "Prove your fitness, conquer Kawah Ijen in Indonesia" so that you will know that we are not very good, but our bodies and minds are very strong. Try going on an adventure, gain experience, and test the hardships. We think that "you will like this kind of travel. Just like we are fascinated and in love with this kind of endless adventure.”
