Kappa Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Azusa River in the center of Kamikochi, not far from the bus terminal. Several hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops can be found around the bridge. The structure of the bridge is wooden and it has become a distinctive symbol of Kamikochi.
Kappa Bridge is especially popular as a photo spot with a terrific view of the Hotaka Peaks and Mt. Myojindake that can been seen when facing upriver. Looking downriver, one has a good view of Mt. Yakedake, the iconic peak at the entryway to Kamikochi whose smoking crater reminds us that it is a very active volcano.
|Stunning Autumn Colors: Kamikochi, Nagano (with Transportation Guide). Kamikochi will be closed on November 15, so I went on the 8th to see its stunning autumn colors before it closed.
The main attractions in Kamikochi are Kappa Bridge, Taisho Pond, and Myojin Pond.
My walking route for the day was Kamikochi Bus Terminal → Kappa Bridge → Taisho Pond → Kappa Bridge → Myojin Pond → Kappa Bridge → Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
At this time, the night buses from Shinjuku and the buses from Nagoya and Nagano are all suspended.
Even the first direct bus from Matsumoto is full.
So I chose to buy a train and bus combo ticket in [Matsumoto].
✓ Take the train at 6:31 am to Shin-Shimashima Station, and transfer seamlessly to the bus to Kamikochi, [no reservation required].
✓ Be sure to [reserve] the bus from Kamikochi to Shin-Shimashima for the return trip.
Hiking route:
① Kappa Bridge → Taisho Pond, about 1h20min with photo stops, just in time to return to Kappa Bridge for lunch.
② Kappa Bridge → Myojin Pond, there are two routes, left and right, the left bank is farther, we took the left bank route and returned on the right bank route, the whole trip took about 3h. You will encounter horses on the way, be careful not to feed them~
Kamikochi is beginner-friendly for hiking, mostly boardwalks and gravel roads, mostly flat, suitable for leisurely hiking.
About supplies: mostly at Kappa Bridge, there are cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops, and it is the closest attraction to the bus stop.
Kamikochi in autumn changes every day, with mainly yellow leaves, so don't expect too much from the maple leaves 🍁.

Kamikochi ต้องไปสักครั้งในชีวิต
[📍 Kamikochi, Japan - One Day Trip in Late October 🍂]
Autumn is coming, and Kamikochi is breathtaking! 🍁

The Infinite Charm of Kamikochi
I signed up for a one-day tour to Kamikochi online. Early in the morning, I took the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Nagoya Station, where I met up with the small tour group.
Kamikochi is one of Japan's most beautiful mountain scenic spots. As soon as you enter the highlands, you feel surrounded by the majestic beauty of the towering mountains.
Upon arrival, we headed straight to the iconic Kappa Bridge of Kamikochi. From the bridge, you can gaze at the Hotaka Mountain Range and the Yakezawa Valley between the peaks. The clear stream under the bridge is so inviting that it makes you want to jump in and play in the water.
After checking in at Kappa Bridge, we set off for Myojin Pond. The trail on the right bank was closed, so we had to take the left bank trail. The scenery along the way was stunning, often referred to as Japan's Jiuzhaigou, with lakes, clear streams, forests, and high mountains, all breathtakingly beautiful.
For me, the greatest charm of Kamikochi lies in the joy of hiking in the magnificent and grand nature while getting a close-up view of the Hida Mountains (also known as the Japanese Alps) towering over 3,000 meters.
Due to time constraints, we didn't make it to Taisho Pond this time, which was a small regret.

The Most Beautiful Painting of Kamikochi
The Tashiro Wetland is one of the 'photo spots' in Kamikochi, and I think it is also one of the most beautiful sights there😍. The water is clear and bright, with a color like that of jade, and alongside it stand rows of tall and straight maple trees. In autumn, the maple leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow, reflecting on the calm, mirror-like surface of the water. This scenery is truly picturesque and breathtaking. When the sunlight shines on the Tashiro Wetland, the river surface even sparkles✨. Behind it, there are the Hotaka peaks and Mount Rokugo as a backdrop!
To reach Tashiro Wetland, it is recommended to take a bus and get off at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal as a starting point for hiking. Along the way, you will pass by Kappa Bridge, and it takes about 20 minutes to arrive!

Kappa Bridge
#thingstodo located in the Kamikochi Valley in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is a popular tourist destination, and it is known for its beautiful mountain scenery and its historical significance.
I recently visited Kappa Bridge, and I had a mixed experience. On the one hand, the bridge is very beautiful and the mountain scenery is stunning. However, the bridge was also very crowded, and it was difficult to enjoy the scenery without being jostled by other people.
I would recommend getting off one station earlier than Kappa Bridge and hiking there. The hike is short and easy, and it is a great way to avoid the crowds.
Overall, I think Kappa Bridge is worth a visit, but I would recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.
Here are some tips for visiting:
- Arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of walking involved.
- Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
- Be aware of the weather conditions and dress accordingly.
