Unstoppable and unforgettable 10 minutes life time experience and fun-filled moments. After about four months of ESL teaching in Jiange before I realized that such a beautiful and monumental place exist.
Jianmen Pass is a mountain pass located southwest of the city of Guangyuan in Sichuan province.
It's located in Jiange County which is a few distance from my apartment.
It's famous for the beauty of its steep slopes and it's strategic importance in ancient times.
As the traditional Chinese saying goes, "If one man guards the pass, ten thousand are unable to get through".
I had real fun with couple of friends at different outings.

Jianmen Pass.
Oh, how perilous and high!
The road to Shu is harder than climbing to the sky!
The founding of the kingdom by Can Cong and Yu Fu is lost in the mists of time.
For 48,000 years, the Qin border has been cut off from the world.
To the west, there is a bird path on Mount Taibai, which leads to the top of Mount Emei.
The earth crumbles, the mountains collapse, and the brave men die, leaving only the stone ladders and plank roads.
Above, the six dragons turn the sun; below, the river flows in reverse.
Even the yellow crane cannot fly over, and the monkeys and apes are afraid to climb.
The winding road of Qingshi is full of twists and turns.
I look up at the stars and sigh.
When will you return from your journey to the west? The steep cliffs are impassable.
I hear the cries of birds in the ancient trees, and the male and female birds fly around the forest.
I hear the cuckoo crying in the moonlit night, and the empty mountains are filled with sorrow.
The road to Shu is harder than climbing to the sky, and it makes me feel old!
The peaks are so high that they almost touch the sky, and the dead pines hang from the cliffs.
The torrents and waterfalls roar, and the rocks crash like thunder.
The danger is so great, why do you come from afar?

Jianmen! Jianmen!!
With a vast land of beautiful scenery, a lone rider guards Jianmen Pass!
The fact that it has "never been breached from the front" is enough to make me want to visit Jianmen Pass. Add to that the saying "The road to Shu is harder than climbing to the sky," and I was even more excited. In October 2024, we finally made it to Jianmen Pass!
1. Recite the entire "The Road to Shu is Hard" and you can get in for free!
2. It's more convenient to stay in town, and the accommodation is better. It's not far, less than 10 km.
3. We entered through the North Gate, took Cableway 1, Bird Road, the mountain road, Jianmen Tower, and exited through the South Gate. We took our time, and it took about 7 hours.
4. There are buses from the South Gate back to the North Gate.
5. Bird Road is less than 1 km long, but there are many places where you have to use both hands and feet, pulling yourself up with the chains.
6. Our hotel had a massage chair, which was a must after climbing the mountain.

Jianmen Pass, experience the difficulty of Shu Road
Entering the Jianmen Pass scenic area, I didn't choose the cableway, nor did I participate in the adventures of Bird Path and Ape Path. Instead, our family strolled along the Shu Road, walking from the north gate towards Jianmen Pass. In the mountains, Dad kept talking to his son about the generals and battles he was fascinated with, and the stories of Shu Road. The cliffs along the way looked as if they were split by a knife. When we reached Jianmen Pass, the child suddenly said, 'No wonder Li Bai once said, 'One man guards the pass, ten thousand cannot open it.' The cliffs along the road narrowed all the way until only the pass was accessible.
The child looked at the mountain and asked me, 'Mom, why does the mountain look like it's made up of many small stones, and from a distance, the cliff looks like the cross-section of a cake cut by a knife?' I couldn't find an answer he could understand.

Jianmen Pass Tower
Jianmen Pass Tower, located in Jiange County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, is the landmark building of the Jianmen Pass Scenic Area, enjoying the reputation of 'the most majestic pass in the world.' The tower was first built during the Three Kingdoms period by Shu Han's Prime Minister Zhuge Liang. After multiple repairs and reconstructions, the current tower was rebuilt in an ancient style based on historical data from 1983 to 1992. The main structure of the tower features three layers of flying eaves, exuding grandeur. The tower stands 17.1 meters high, showcasing the magnificence and intricacy of ancient architecture.

Jianmen Pass Monkey Path
Jianmen Pass Monkey Path is a very thrilling and exciting cliff road located in the Jianmen Pass Scenic Area of Jiange County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province. It is 440 meters long, with a maximum drop of about 500 meters. The road is only 30 centimeters wide at its widest point and less than 15 centimeters at its narrowest point, hence the name 'Monkey Path.' This road zigzags up along the cliff crevice, with no iron chains or safety railings, only a very thick iron chain for tourists to hold onto to ensure safety.

Visiting Jianmen Pass in summer, I still remember the eternal painting drawn by the pass city and the bright moon
The Jianmen Pass Scenic Area in Jiange County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province is an impressive A-level scenic spot that we recommend our friends to visit during the Dragon Boat Festival and before the summer vacation.
We arrived here on a cicada-filled, bird-singing afternoon in midsummer, where Jianmen Pass greeted us with lush forests and sheer cliffs. Below, I'll pick out two memories to share with friends and revisit the journey to Jianmen Pass.
❶Naoyao Path & Bird Path
You can take a cable car up the mountain in Jianmen Pass Scenic Area, but what caught our eye were two 'sheep intestine trails'. To let tourists experience the 'difficulty of Shu Road', the scenic area has set up two mountain trails with a higher difficulty level. The Naoyao Path is named after Li Bai's 'The Difficulty of Shu Road', where 'monkeys moan in despair, wishing to climb but finding no support'. It is a zigzag mountain path, only 446 meters long, but situated between nearly vertical cliffs. The path is narrow, allowing only one person to pass, and there are no protective railings along the entire route, so you need to make a reservation in advance and take protective measures to climb.
We chose the Bird Path at the other end, which is also a narrow mountain path, but with railings. The Bird Path does not require protective measures, and you can walk and enjoy the view more freely, but you also need to pay attention to safety.
❷The Eternal Painting Created by the Pass City and the Bright Moon
After the Bird Path, we walked down the mountain, admiring the rugged mountain scenery, passing through the unique 'One Line Sky', and through the Jianmen Pass Tower, which is 'impassable by any man', and stayed at an inn near the tower.
That night, we came to the front of the tower again, surrounded by summer fireflies, and by chance saw the moon and the tower in the same frame. The twinkling fireflies made the scene both illusory and real, while the clarity of the moon and the vicissitudes of the city became an eternal memory.
📌Practical Tips for Self-Driving Travel

Jianmenguan is indeed a difficult path through Shu
In the vast landscape of China, there is a place that has been extolled by literati throughout the ages for its extraordinary beauty—Jianmenguan. Here, it is not only a living fossil of the Three Kingdoms period but also a perfect blend of nature and culture, making it a tourist hotspot.
Attraction Introduction: Jianmen is the most dangerous pass in the world, where one man guards and ten thousand cannot open
Jianmenguan, located in Jiange County, Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province, is the most treacherous section of the Shu Road and has always been a strategic military location. From the top of the pass, one can look out at the peaks that resemble swords and the swirling mists, almost hearing the sounds of ancient battlefields. Not-to-be-missed attractions include:
• Jianmenguan Tower: The reconstructed tower stands on the cliff, majestic and imposing, making it an excellent spot for photography.
• Glass Skywalk: A thrilling high-altitude experience with the abyss underfoot and magnificent landscapes ahead, for those brave enough to try.
• Liangshan Temple: A secluded ancient temple nestled deep in the forest, with incense wafting through, adding a touch of tranquility and Zen to the journey.
• Cuiyun Corridor: The ancient cypresses stand tall, this 'green corridor' has witnessed a thousand years of vicissitudes, walking through it, one feels the breath of nature and history.
Itinerary: Two-day in-depth tour to fully enjoy the charm of Jianmenguan

• Afternoon: Visit Jianmenguan Tower and the Glass Skywalk, experiencing the difficulty of the Shu Road.
• Evening: Stay at a characteristic homestay at the foot of the mountain, enjoying the tranquility of the mountains.
Day 2:
• Morning: Head to Liangshan Temple to experience Buddhist culture, then stroll through Cuiyun Corridor, listening to the stories told by ancient trees.
• Afternoon: Join a hiking adventure led by a local guide to explore more hidden beauty.
• Evening: Return to Chengdu, concluding a fulfilling trip to Jianmenguan.
Gourmet Strategy: The taste of Jianmen, a culinary delight not to be missed
• Jianmen Tofu: A must-try, with a variety of types, from the homely Mapo tofu to the innovative tofu feast, each bite is a supreme temptation for the taste buds.
• Handmade Noodle Skin: Handcrafted with a chewy texture, served with a special sauce, simple yet unforgettable.
Transportation Strategy:
• External Transportation: Convenient high-speed train from Chengdu to Guangyuan, with direct bus service to Jianmenguan from Guangyuan station.
• Internal Transportation: It is recommended to walk or take an eco-friendly sightseeing car within the scenic area, as some attractions are far apart, so plan your physical strength accordingly.
On this land sculpted by historical winds, every step is taken with a story. Jianmenguan is not just a travel destination but also a spiritual cleansing, a conversation with the ancients across time and space.

Reciting the text can get you free admission, regretting not having studied hard before, let's brave the Jianmen Pass on May Day
Jianmen Pass, as one of the four famous passes in China, is one of the iconic attractions of Guangyuan.
Here you can find magnificent landscapes and a long history. You can climb the pass tower, overlook the mountains and canyons, and experience the grand natural scenery.
The difficulty of the Shu Road is harder than climbing to the sky, and you can experience it here.
If you can recite the full text of 'The Difficulty of Shu Road' and after the staff confirms it's qualified, you can get a free ticket valid for the day to Jianmen Pass Scenic Area or Cuiyun Corridor Scenic Area, limited to one per person per day, haha
Also, at the Cuiyun Corridor Scenic Area Tourist Center Square, if you can write out the poem 'Cuiyun Corridor' by Qiao Bo (Qing) within five minutes, and after the staff checks it, you can get three tickets valid for the day to Cuiyun Corridor.
Jianmen Pass-Cuiyun Corridor Scenic Area offers free admission to active, retired military personnel and their 'three relatives'.
Tourists from Heilongjiang can get free admission to Jianmen Pass by showing their ID card.
Navigate to the north/south gate of Jianmen Pass Scenic Area.

Jianmen Pass | The Perilous Ancient Shu Path Worth Experiencing in Life
🤦♀️So dangerous, so dangerous...
🤷Finally, I understand the difficulty of the Shu path, as hard as ascending to the heavens. Not to mention in ancient times... Every step is a leap across the boundaries of history, and this place is worth experiencing the peril of the ancient Shu path once.
🏯Jianmen Pass, as an important pass on the ancient Shu path, combines the natural beauty of being grand, dangerous, strange, and elegant. Li Bai lamented its 'One man guards the pass, ten thousand are unable to open'... The terrain is steep, the mountains are clear, the waters are beautiful, and the scenery is pleasant, especially the cliffs and the dangerous valleys, which are breathtaking...👍.
🚗Transportation: Self-drive navigation to Jianmen Pass from Chengdu. (About 4 hours), plenty of parking spaces available.
🎫Ticket: 100 for adults, half price for children, cable car 50.
🧚🏻♂️Route selection:
We chose the north-to-south route🍃:
North Gate - Cableway - Bird Path - Fairy Bridge - Liangshan Temple - Liangshan Pavilion - Stone Bamboo Peak - One Line Sky🐒. (Relatively easier)
🌟Warm tips:
1️⃣Recite 'The Difficulty of Shu Road', and you can get free admission.
2️⃣For the north route, the cable car can take you to mid-mountain for 50r per person. If you don't take the cable car, it's nearly a 2-hour climb.
3️⃣Bird Path and Macaque Path are narrow and steep, with unclimbable heights above and bottomless abysses below. Visitors must slowly move up by holding onto the iron chains with both hands. It is not recommended for friends with poor physical strength or fear of heights.
4️⃣Macaque Path ticket is 68 yuan, buy on-site, sign and stamp, you have to sign a disclaimer, if something happens, no responsibility will be pursued, after all, there might be safety risks.
5️⃣The Jianmen Pass Gate Tower is the core attraction of the entire scenic area. The South Gate is closest to the Gate Tower, about 800 meters away. 'One man guards the pass, ten thousand are unable to open' refers to this place (If you don't want to climb and only see the Gate Tower, you can enter from the South Gate.
YogaYardstickYogi
The Sword Pavilion is towering and majestic, with one man guarding the pass, and ten thousand unable to open it
Sword Gate Pass
It rained all day yesterday, and it was said to be closed. After coming here today, it indeed feels too dangerous to climb in heavy rain.
Let's get back to the point, take bus number 7 from Jian'ge County Bus Station to reach the scenic area, remember to enter the station to get on the bus and buy a ticket, you can't wait for it outside, the fare to the scenic area is 3 yuan. It is recommended to enter from the north gate and exit from the south gate, this way there are more downhill paths which are less strenuous, some say downhill hurts the knees, but I think taking it slow and applying force effectively is quite helpful.
The ticket is 105 yuan, those who can recite 'The Road to Shu is Hard' from memory get free admission, it is recommended to only take the first section of the cable car for 50 yuan, which can be purchased after entering the main gate of the scenic area. After getting off the cable car, you will face a choice of three paths: one is to continue taking the second section of the cable car (suitable for the elderly and those carrying children), the second is the Gibbon Path (suitable for the brave seeking thrills), and the third is the intermediate Bird Path. I decisively chose the Bird Path, the Gibbon Path looked a bit scary, even for the Bird Path, you need to climb with both hands holding onto chains, so remember not to hold a stick or carry things in your hands, after a period of climbing, the path becomes gentler, but there is a cliff on the right side, you must pay attention to safety, and try not to look down, it really makes you dizzy, after coming down I felt my blood pressure had risen
Then it's a brisk walk, passing through the Small Tunnel (which I didn't notice, confused), Stone Bamboo Peak, Skyline, and finally the Pass Tower.
I walked and stopped along the way, taking 5 hours in total, I am from the Northeast, I had a bowl of hot Douhua (tofu pudding with chili oil and brine) on the road, and a smoked pork rib, both for the first time, and they tasted quite good. Then exit through the south gate and continue to take bus number 7 back to the county town, this bus seems to run at intervals depending on the passenger flow, the driver said it might be 30 minutes, or possibly 50 minutes.

Journey to Guangyuan
Where is the strongest New Year's atmosphere? The answer is often hidden in those lively and simple county towns.
First stop: Guangyuan Pu'an Town Bell and Drum Tower Old Street. Stepping into it, you are instantly surrounded by a strong New Year's atmosphere. Red lanterns are hung everywhere, and the brilliant lights are intertwined into a piece, full of celebration and harmony. Streets and alleys, various kinds of New Year's goods are displayed in various shops, and the expectation index for the New Year is pulled straight to MAX!
The people here are simple and enthusiastic. Uncles and aunts beat gongs and drums, dance dragons and lions, and the lively scene makes people linger. The crowd blocked the entire street, this scene, awakened the pure New Year's flavor in the depths of memory, as if traveling back to that simple and unpretentious era.
Second stop: The New Year's flavor of Jianmenguan has a unique charm of ethnic style.
Wearing a roe deer hat and a roe deer skin coat, Ewenki friends returned to Jiange again. I happened to catch a tug-of-war competition at Jianmenguan, and I was fortunate to be able to feel their power and passion on the spot. The "Bear Fight Dance" on the spot pushed the warm atmosphere to a climax. Not only that, there are paper-cut window flowers and writing blessings experience at the event site, unexpectedly swept out professional blessings. Harvest New Year blessings from ancient times in a different New Year's flavor, feeling fresh and wonderful.
Third stop: The Baicao Garden Lantern Festival is dazzling!
The 2nd Guangyuan Lantern Festival officially opened, and I went to the scene for a round. There are already many tourists coming to the scene to enjoy the lanterns. The New Year's atmosphere here is strong, and the entire lantern festival layout is quite large. It takes about 2 hours to stroll and take pictures.
Especially the group of "Daughter's Dress" giant colored lanterns, combining Tang Dynasty elements with colored lantern effects, showing the unique charm of women, the makeup of women's faces has various colors and shapes, which is the "flower button" of the Tang Dynasty's heyday. Scan AR to interact, the perfect collision of technology and traditional culture! There is also a group of colored lanterns worth checking in. The "Two Dragons Playing with Beads" lamp group next to the main stage is even more domineering, shining golden, and full of momentum.

Lesser-known Spring Festival travel destination in northern Sichuan - Guangyuan, the hometown of Wu Zetian
During the Spring Festival, I recommend you to visit Guangyuan, a lesser-known city in northern Sichuan. Guangyuan is famous for being the hometown of Wu Zetian, and is the northernmost city in Sichuan, very close to Xi'an. Guangyuan has a special geographical location, it is a key town of Shu Gate, the core of Three Kingdoms culture, an ancient military fortress, and an important activity place for the Red Army. One of the top ten famous passes, Jianmen Pass, is here.
When you come to Guangyuan, it is recommended to visit Huangze Temple, which is the ancestral temple of Empress Wu Zetian. The cliff carvings in the temple are shocking and can be described as the hometown of imperial grace. Phoenix Mountain Park is a comprehensive park in Guangyuan city. There is a Phoenix Tower on the top of the mountain, which is the landmark of Guangyuan city. You can overlook the whole city of Guangyuan from the tower. Note that the lights are turned off and the park is cleared at 6 o'clock, so it's a pity that you can't see the night view. Qianfo Cliff is also worth a visit, with more than 7000 large and small statues preserved on the cliff, which is very spectacular, known as the 'Art Gallery of Stone Carvings of All Ages', admiring the greatness of ancient craftsmen.
Jianmen Pass in Guangyuan is very famous. It is said to have been split and opened because of the temptation of five golden bulls and five beauties to the king of Shu. The two sides are towering cliffs, leaving only a slit to pass through, which has been a must-contest place for the military since ancient times. Reciting the full text of 'The Difficulty of Shu Road' can exempt the entrance fee to Jianmen Pass. Choosing Bird Road to enter is not so thrilling, but Ape Road is very exciting. Both are 'Z'-shaped routes that need to be close to the cliff, taking about 6 hours. Friends who like excitement are recommended to try.
For friends who like climbing, I personally think Jianmen Pass is enough to climb. Finally, when you come to Guangyuan, it is recommended to go to Zhaohua Ancient City. This is a famous ancient city during the Three Kingdoms period. The history of more than 4000 years is well preserved, and many famous scenes and relics are here.
Guangyuan food still can't escape the spicy flavor of Sichuan. You must try Jianmen Tofu, and Sichuan pickled fish is also super delicious. It takes one and a half hours from Chengdu to Guangyuan, and two hours from Xi'an to Guangyuan, both are super close. Friends who are allowed by the itinerary are recommended not to miss Guangyuan, this small city on the Shu Road.
Recommended must-visit attractions in Guangyuan: 📍Jianmen Pass, 📍Zhaohua Ancient City, 📍Huangze Temple, 📍Qianfo Cliff
Recommended three-day and two-night itinerary in Guangyuan:
