Hanoi Highlights: A Cultural Journey in the Heart of Vietnam
Hanoi is a city with a blend of rich history and bustling street life. Ancient temples and colonial architecture coexist here.
Getting Around - I joined a day tour to visit all the highlights in Hanoi city to maximise time.
Highlights:
1. Tran Quoc Pagoda
Highlights - This Pagoda is located on a small island in West Lake. It is the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi with a vibrant red and gold architecture. It dates back to 1500 years ago.
2. West Lake
Highlights - This lake is an urban oasis, surrounded by lush greenery. Nice to take a stroll around the lake and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
3. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
Highlights - This is a solemn monument. It is dedicated to Ho Chi Minh, the founding father. You will get to see his preserved body and learn about history of Vietnam.
4. Hoan Kiem Lake
Highlights - The lake is known for the iconic Turtle Tower in the middle of the lake. Another nice place with picturesque scenery in Hanoi.

Hanoi Four-Day Citywalk can be enjoyed like this
After playing in Hanoi for four days, taking leisurely strolls and breaks was very relaxing. The attractions are quite concentrated, so even a commando could check off the main sites in one day, but I personally recommend three days for a more comfortable experience.
🏠About the attractions:
1. Top recommendation is Train Street. You need someone to guide you in, probably for safety reasons, and the fee is not more expensive than outside. To see the train, you have to wait for the weekend, and it's more beautiful when the lights are on at dusk.
2. Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Security checks are required to enter, and many tour groups come here to check in.
3. The Imperial Citadel. The entrance fee is 30,000, and it's not very big inside, but many young ladies are taking photos. The yellow city walls are very photogenic.
4. Hanoi Opera House. It's beautiful for taking photos when the lighting is good.
5. St. Joseph's Cathedral. Suitable for photo ops and check-ins.
6. The Fine Arts Museum and the History Museum are worth a visit if you have time.
7. The famous coffee building + Hoan Kiem Lake. I sat in the rooftop café for a while, and the view was nice.
🚴About transportation:
1. Walking is highly recommended, as the attractions are not far from each other. Just choose where you want to go and use Google Maps to find the location and route. There are many shops and cafés along the road where you can stop by anytime.
2. Riding a motorbike. Grab is very convenient, and motorbikes are cheaper.
3. The double-decker red bus. It's very convenient to cover all the attractions in one go.
4. Pedicab. It's worth trying, but there's too much exhaust on the roads, so the experience is average.
5. To go from the airport to the city center, take bus 86, which costs 45,000 and takes about an hour, much more expensive by taxi.
🍽️About food and drink:
1. Vietnamese pho is very tasty. There are various ingredients like beef, pork, seafood, etc., and the price does not exceed 50,000, with free refills of noodles.
2. Egg coffee. Very fragrant, sweet, and creamy, and when mixed with coffee, it has a caramelized flavor, although the portion is a bit small, it's definitely worth a try. I went to Giang Coffee, which is said to be the original creator, and everyone had a cup in hand.
3. Coffee street. As long as you're in the city, there's a coffee shop every ten steps. You can try any with a Google Maps rating of 4.5, which is very friendly for coffee lovers. I bought Arabica coffee beans to take home, and they also have Moka pots and other items with great value for money.
4. There are many outdoor gear shops around the coffee building, such as The North Face, Patagonia, Salomon, and Arc'teryx. Remember to haggle for clothes, but it's harder to bargain for shoes. All are made in Vietnam, and you can judge their authenticity for yourself.
5. Street food. Juice costs around 25,000 per cup, and there are various noodles and cakes, all at reasonable prices.
🎢Other supplements:
1. There are many motorcycles in Hanoi city, which I find a bit noisy, so after walking for a while, I like to find a relatively quiet café to sit in.
2. You can withdraw money from ATMs, and UnionPay cards are charged a fee. Many shops accept credit cards, which is convenient.
3. When getting change while shopping, make sure to count carefully, as you might be given less by a few hundred thousand haha.
4. It's cheaper to get a SIM card in the city than at the airport.
Overall, Hanoi is not expensive, and the architecture and streets are picturesque, suitable for a leisurely three to four-day stroll. If you have extra time, you can spend a day or two in Halong Bay, making it about a week in total.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: The Pillar of a Nation
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi stands as a monumental tribute to the father of modern Vietnam. Dominating Ba Dinh Square, where President Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnam's independence, this imposing granite structure is a fusion of architectural grandeur and historical reverence. The meticulously manicured gardens and soldier guards accentuate its solemn atmosphere. Inside, the embalmed remains of Uncle Ho, as he is affectionately known, lie in state, encapsulating a moment of eternal repose. Visitors line up, often in silence, to pay their respects, reflecting the profound impact of his leadership and vision on the nation. The surrounding grounds, adorned with various monuments and relics, offer a deeper dive into the leader's life and the pivotal moments of Vietnam's struggle for independence. The mausoleum is not just a building; it's a symbol of a nation's unwavering respect and gratitude for its founding leader. For those looking to grasp the soul of Vietnam and its journey, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum stands as an unmissable beacon of inspiration and reflection.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a huge complex built in honor of Ho Chi Minh, the country’s former and revolutionary leader. His body is preserved in the mausoleum and protected by the guard. Apart from the mausoleum, you can also explore his private residence while he was serving the country which consists of his simple house, garden and pond. There is also the Vietnam War Memorial in the complex where you can learn about the brutal proxy war that went in the country for two decades until it gained independence. You will see old Soviet weapons and stories about the war here. It is a must visit for history buff like me.

Served as resting place for Uncle Ho
A visit to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi can serve as a way to understand Vietnam’s history, values and culture.
Ho Chi Minh is considered as the father of Vietnam and founder of the Communist Party. Walking around this area, you can explore beautiful landscape, layers of bamboo trees. Check out the flag ceremony timing if you wish to witness it.
No photos are allowed inside the Mausoleum. Visitors can just walk one round to “see” the well-reserved body of Uncle Ho. It should take less than 30 minutes inside here.
We prefer to spend time walking around the complex and explore surrounding buildings like Presidential Palace.

Flag Raising at HCM Mausoleum
Absolutely worth visiting. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is more than a tourist attraction; it is a significant historical site. Whether you are a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or a cultural explorer, the mausoleum offers something of value. It provides a solemn yet enriching experience, reflecting the deep respect for one of Vietnam’s most iconic figures.
Its worth getting there for 6am for the flag raising ceremony. An interesting place. 6am Flag raising ceremony. His tomb stands in the historic Ba Dinh Square which was the scene of fighting against the French and the Japanese and the place where Ho Chi Minh himself read out the Declaration of Independence in 1945.
In the tradition of Lenin, Stalin and Mao, Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum is a monumental marble edifice. Contrary to his desire for a simple cremation, the mausoleum was constructed from materials gathered from all over Vietnam between 1973 and 1975. Set deep in the bowels of the building in a glass sarcophagus is the frail, pale body of Ho Chi Minh.

Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum
#travelanywhere
Visiting the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in Hanoi was a deeply moving experience. The mausoleum serves as the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, the revered leader of Vietnam's independence struggle and the country's first president. The imposing granite structure and solemn atmosphere evoke a sense of reverence and national pride. Inside, Ho Chi Minh's preserved body lies in state, surrounded by guards in white uniforms who maintain a dignified silence. The architecture is stark and minimalist, reflecting the leader's modest lifestyle and dedication to his people. The surrounding Ba Dinh Square, where important national events are held, adds to the mausoleum's significance as a symbol of Vietnam's sovereignty and unity. Visiting the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is not only a tribute to the leader's legacy but also a solemn reminder of Vietnam's struggle for independence and its ongoing journey as a nation.

Impressions of Hanoi
Taking advantage of the 8-day National Day holiday in 2023, my friend and I planned to enter Vietnam from Hekou, Yunnan, and take a sleeper bus directly to Laojie from the Laojie port of entry for 4 hours. The day we arrived was our National Day, and many Vietnamese people were also gathered around Hoan Kiem Lake for activities, which was very lively.
🌟Highlights:
In the old town area around the lake, you can see them sitting on small chairs and tables, ordering some cold drinks or some food to gather together. The main feature is that those stools are very small, and it's very lively.
🍽Food Recommendations: When you're in Hanoi, you must try a bowl of beef noodles, which is especially delicious. Also recommended are grilled meat vermicelli, fried spring rolls, and egg coffee.
👍Most Recommended: The places to visit are all concentrated around the old town area, including Hoan Kiem Lake, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Thang Long Temple...
This impression, perhaps because of the holiday, made me feel that Hanoi's population is very large, the motorcycle army is particularly spectacular, and Hanoi's air pollution is still quite serious, with smog during this period. However, this city still has its connotations, and it is recommended to visit for two days.

The Ho Chi Minh mausoleum is a great place to visit for those interested in learning more about the former leader of Vietnam. The space is powerful and you also have the chance to walk around the gardens and visit the home where he resided for the later part of his life. It was pretty amazing seeing Ho Chi Minh and his resting place. Don't you dare try to take a photo. Nice how it was free also. At the end we opted not to see the presidential palace, as you can't go in it, it's just a money grab in my opinion. Enjoy. #wintergetaway
