This is Yangzhou.
It's best to come to Yangzhou on weekdays, otherwise the weekend experience may not be as good. The main purpose of visiting Yangzhou is to eat and play. In the morning, arrange to have morning tea. We recommend the Garden Teahouse or Ye Chun on Yanfu Road (after eating, you can take a walk nearby, there are sightseeing boats and the Tianci Zen Temple). If you want something more upscale, you can go to Quyuan for morning tea, which is right next to Shouxihu Lake. For lunch or dinner, you can find a restaurant to try Huaiyang cuisine. We recommend Yangzhou Banquet, Pingshan Banquet, Yangzhou Lion Tower, Xishi Tower, etc. As for places to visit, start with Daming Temple, then go to Shouxihu Lake, Dongguan Street, Ge Garden, He Garden. Yangzhou is a place for slow living, so take your time to savor it.

A famous Chinese private garden
The garden was easy to get inside with the ticket buying process being very quiet and welcoming. There is also lots of parking nearby.
Inside the garden there is lots to explore. I like how much of the building there is to explore with rooms to show off the most recent residents living conditions. You can see the masters bedrooms and study room alongside some of the rooms built for entertaining.
The garden was a private residence and garden from the late Qing dynasty for the He family. There are lots of signs around the museum which are bilingual. There is also a lot of staff dressed up in traditional costume which adds to the experience.
We enjoyed a 2 hour visit on a weekend winter and it was very quiet.#

He Garden: The last garden of the late Qing Dynasty.
He Garden: The last garden of the late Qing Dynasty
Yangzhou, a poetic and charming ancient city, is home to He Garden, known as the "No. 1 Garden of the Late Qing Dynasty." Stepping into He Garden is like stepping into a painting where history and nature intertwine.
He Garden, also known as Jixiao Villa, is named after Tao Yuanming's poem "I lean on the south window to express my pride, and climb the east hill to express my joy," exuding a reclusive atmosphere. It is the last large private garden in Yangzhou, with a unique blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles and a multi-level corridor that is unparalleled in Jiangnan. It is a unique garden with four world-renowned features.
Strolling through the garden, the stone house of Master Shitao's mountain works presents a unique landscape, as if you can see the master's ingenuity and craftsmanship. The Horseback Building has welcomed many celebrities and scholars, with a rich historical heritage. The Shui Xin Pavilion, a filming location for TV dramas such as "My Fair Princess," adds a touch of fantasy and romance. The pavilions and towers are scattered, the rocks and water pavilions are reflected, the dense green trees cast dappled shadows, and the ancient and elegant atmosphere is overwhelming.
The 1,500-meter-long corridor is undoubtedly the most dazzling pearl in the garden. The two-story corridor connects the East Garden, West Garden, and residential courtyard like a ribbon. Walking through it, you can enjoy the garden scenery from different angles, with a different view at every step. The variously shaped windows and holes on the corridor are like picture frames, framing the poetic and picturesque scenery of the garden.
In the residential area of the garden owner, the study, living room, and bedroom are all simply and exquisitely decorated, with a blend of Chinese and Western styles that reflect the taste and demeanor of a wealthy family. The bedroom and portrait of the He family's daughter silently tell the story of past prosperity and stories, making people sigh at the vicissitudes and changes of time.
In He Garden, every stone, every brick, and every door and window seems to be whispering the glory of the past, making people intoxicated in this old dream of the late Qing Dynasty, reluctant to leave, and just want to quietly listen to its century-old echo.

He Garden, Yangzhou | A garden filled with the fragrance of osmanthus in late autumn.
The ancient buildings of He Garden are painted with the "orange and green" of late autumn, becoming both the poetic imagery of ancient people and the colorful palette of painters.
Strolling along the paths of He Garden, the shadows of osmanthus trees sway, and the long-lasting fragrance fills the air, adding a mysterious and romantic touch to the century-old garden.
He Garden has a variety of osmanthus trees, including golden osmanthus, silver osmanthus, red osmanthus, and four-season osmanthus. Immersed in the blend of the century-old garden and century-old osmanthus trees, it feels like traveling through time and enjoying the autumn scenery with the leisurely and elegant ancient people.
The romantic autumn charm hidden in the ancient buildings of He Garden harmoniously blends with Chinese aesthetics, with every wall and tile seemingly telling a unique Chinese romance. The pavilions, terraces, and black-tiled walls are hidden among the flowers and trees, creating a beautiful autumn garden scene with the autumn colors in the garden. The splendor of autumn and the tranquility of the garden complement each other, making it a mesmerizing experience.

He Garden in Yangzhou.
When you visit Suzhou, you must visit the Humble Administrator's Garden and Lingering Garden. So, which garden is a must-visit in Yangzhou? Of course, it's He Garden!
He Garden, also known as Jixiao Mountain Villa, is a national key cultural relic protection unit. He Garden is divided into two parts: the residential area in the east and the largest private garden in Yangzhou in the west. The architectural layout of He Garden is very ingenious, with both the grandeur of northern gardens and the exquisite beauty of private gardens in the south of the Yangtze River.
The four seasons of He Garden each have their own unique beauty. In spring, cherry blossoms are in full bloom. In summer, lotus flowers are in full bloom. In autumn, ginkgo leaves turn golden. In winter, the snow-covered landscape is like a painting. He Garden is also the filming location of TV dramas such as "Dream of the Red Chamber" and "When Tangerines Turn Red". Every corner here is full of stories and historical charm.
Don't you want to come and see this Yangzhou garden?
JackMaguire26
The essence of Yangzhou gardens is in He Garden.
He Garden, formerly known as Jixiao Mountain Villa, is the finale of Yangzhou private gardens. It is a national key cultural relics protection unit, a national AAAA tourist attraction, and was rated as the first batch of national key parks together with the Summer Palace in Beijing and the Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou.
The He family has a very close relationship with several famous families in modern Chinese history: Beiyang Minister Li Hongzhang and Emperor Guangxu's teacher Sun Jianai are fellow villagers and in-laws, and they are advancing and retreating together; they also have a marriage relationship with Emperor Guangxu's other more famous teacher Weng Tonghe and Qing court minister Zhang Zhidong, a representative of the Westernization Movement.
The crown of the architectural features of He Garden-the 1500-meter double corridor known as the "first corridor in the world" constitutes the convenience and beauty of the garden architecture, which is unique in Chinese gardens and is called the prototype of China's overpass by industry experts;
Mr. Luo Zhe, a contemporary Chinese ancient garden expert, also wrote a special inscription for He Garden "The First Garden in the Late Qing Dynasty". Walking into He Garden is like walking into a beautiful picture of history and humanities; a legendary figure with multiple identities of bureaucrats, salt merchants, hermits, and educators, the tortuous and secret heart journey is vividly revealed here; a feudal family is moving towards enlightenment The survival drama of the rise and fall of the big family is vividly staged here; a rich and colorful story of the changing modern Chinese history is vividly displayed here...

He Garden: Thank you to the garden owner for doing two things right!
📍Address: Yangzhou, Jiangsu
🚗Transportation: Online car-hailing
👍️Must-visit: He Garden
🎟️Tickets: CNY 48/person
💗Other tips:
1. He Garden, originally named Jixiao Mountain Villa, is the "No. 1 Garden of the Late Qing Dynasty"
2. He Garden is a Qing Dynasty garden that incorporates Western architectural techniques and is bold and avant-garde in design. The core viewing area and residential area are both two-story buildings
3. The residential area is similar to modern terraced houses. There are corridors between rooms and buildings, similar to the inner ring road of a city. The corridors in the viewing area are similar to the outer ring road of a city. The corridor branch leading to the Jin Yue Pavilion is more like a ramp on a highway
4. On one side of the outer ring corridor is an open railing for viewing, and on the other side is a partition wall with various flower windows. The flower windows add to the scenery of the corridor, and in the era when mobile communication was not developed, it was more convenient to find and call people upstairs and downstairs in the large yard
5. The flower windows on the partition wall between the inner and outer ring corridors are higher than people and smaller. This not only adds to the beauty of the partition wall, but also takes into account the need for privacy in the residential area
6. The pavilion stage in the lake is also a major highlight. The unique design surrounded by water on all sides can achieve natural reverberation sound effects. Walking along the corridor upstairs and watching the performance is like a drone aerial view
7. On this basis, the garden owner did two things right: one is to set aside a large piece of land to build a boathouse. The architectural style of the boathouse is atmospheric, the glass flower windows are western-style, and the soft and hard decoration is elegant, which adds a lot of color to He Garden. The second is to buy the Pieshi Mountain House and protect it completely. Pieshi Mountain House is the most important rockery work of the rockery master Shi Tao (also said to be a solitary product in the world) and is a priceless treasure in the garden
8. Thank you to the garden owner: because of the Pieshi Mountain House and the boathouse, we saw a better He Garden
9. Friendly reminder: The courtyard door of Pieshi Mountain House is not very conspicuous, don't miss it

He Garden and Ge Garden in Yangzhou, if you can visit one, that's great
✅ About the choice
If you have plenty of time, visit both, as they are not far from each other and a one-day tour is completely sufficient. If you have to choose one, 'Ge Garden' is preferred by many for its representativeness of gardens, and it has a larger area with a richer variety of scenes for photography; if you are interested in architectural details, 'He Garden' is the place to go.
✅ 'Ge Garden' 💰48
One of the four famous gardens, a private garden of a Qing Dynasty salt merchant in Yangzhou, Ge Garden is mainly known for its bamboo and rockeries. It is famous for its bamboo and the rockeries representing the four seasons.
Tour order: North Gate → Bamboo Appreciation Area in the North → Four Seasons Rockery Garden Area in the Middle → Residential Area in the South → South Gate
✅ The tour of Ge Garden starts at the North Gate and ends at the South Gate. When you exit, you'll be at Dongguan Street, so you can enjoy two places at once.
✅ 'He Garden' 💰48
The filming location for 'My Fair Princess' and 'Marrying the Right Man by Mistaking the Bridal Sedan Chair', the design of the second-floor corridor in He Garden is quite rare in gardens, and I really like the floral windows of He Garden.
Tour order: East Gate → Peony Hall → Boat Hall → Water Heart Pavilion → Up to the Second Floor Corridor → Follow the sequence → Butterfly Hall → Embroidery Building → Nanmu Hall → Piece Stone Mountain House → Horse Riding Building → South Gate
✅ Pishi Street, Dongguan Street is right next to it, and along with Wenchang Pavilion, they can be arranged into a one-day tour route:
Wenchang Pavilion → Siwang Pavilion → Caiyi Street → Ge Garden North Gate → Ge Garden South Gate → Dongguan Street → Pishi Street → He Garden East Gate → He Garden South Gate
✅ It is recommended to buy a yearly tourist pass for 238 yuan in Yangzhou, as the ticket prices will be worth it if you visit all the attractions.
✅ Before visiting the gardens, it's a good idea to look at 📱 explanations or find a guide on-site, so you won't just skim through the gardens.
✅ It takes about 2 hours to visit both gardens, and it's recommended to go during off-peak times for a different experience.

Visiting He Garden at night offers a unique scenery
Yangzhou is filled with poetic gardens.
He Garden, also known as Jixiao Mountain Villa: Leaning against the south window to express pride, ascending the eastern heights to release a carefree shout. This poetic name easily reminds people of the world-famous novel Wuthering Heights. It is also known as the finest garden of the late Qing dynasty. Today, it is one of the most famous spots in Yangzhou for portrait photography, with ladies in ancient costumes everywhere.
I used to visit He Garden during the day, to see the rockeries and the ladies, but now with the scorching sun, it's even more appealing at night. A night tour of He Garden, to see the light show and the ladies. The park features various performances such as Yang Opera and puppet shows, and these performances further highlight the winding paths and secluded charm of the night, with lights reflecting on the ancient buildings, creating a beautiful anachronism.

⏰Opening hours: 7:30-17:30
🌟He Garden, located at No. 66 Xuningmen Street, Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, also known as 'Jixiao Mountain Villa', is a classical Chinese garden architecture that was built in the mid-Qing Dynasty. It is acclaimed as the 'number one garden of the late Qing Dynasty', covering an area of more than 14,000 square meters, with a building area of over 7,000 square meters. He Garden was created by He Zhishao during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, and the Pianshi Mountain House is a masterpiece of mountain stacking by the master Shi Tao.
🌟Unlike the symmetrical axis concept in foreign gardens, it adopts a natural approach. Its pavilions, terraces, and towers are irregularly scattered among the landscapes, whether man-made or formed by the terrain, aiming for the artistic conception of the unity of heaven and man.
🌟Integration of Chinese and Western styles: The main building of the Yuxiu Building is two brick-and-wood two-story buildings, both adopting the traditional Chinese concept of linked buildings and incorporating Western architectural techniques.
🌟Scenery of the four seasons: In spring, watch the tender buds; in summer, appreciate the mature green; in autumn, there are red maples; in winter, watch the silver frost hanging on the branches. The scenery of the four seasons is different, and the joy is also endless.

One third of the rascals are in Yangzhou.
The top garden of the late Qing Dynasty,
It is a garden, and it is also history.

Is another kind of artistic conception of Jiangnan.

He Garden
The He Garden in Yangzhou, known as the finest garden of the late Qing Dynasty, is worth a visit. The layout of this garden is somewhat different from traditional gardens like the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Ge Garden. The elements seem similar, but it feels more practical and compact, with richer architectural features. Perhaps because it was built during the late Qing period, it also incorporates some Western elements. The materials used in the garden's construction are very exquisite; the Taihu rocks are beautiful. The halls, towers, and galleries are grand and yet have a sense of mystery, being both elegant and comfortable for practical use.

🔸Suggested Visiting Time: 1.5h
🔸Address: 66 Xuningmen Street, Guangling District, Yangzhou City
🚩 Number One in the World
🔸The Number One Gallery in the World - The Fudao Back Gallery
The garden is divided into four parts: the East Garden, West Garden, Residential Courtyard, and Pianshi Mountain House. The Pianshi Mountain House is located to the south of the East Garden, while the Residential Courtyard is surrounded by the East Garden, West Garden, and Pianshi Mountain House. The two-story connected buildings and the complex gallery within the garden are integrated with the residential buildings in front.
🔸The Number One Window in the World - The Assorted Flower Window
Shaped like plum blossoms, crabapples, folding fans, and vases. Walking through them, one can enjoy the scenery along the gallery, with an extended view that is full of ancient charm
🔸The Number One Pavilion in the World - The Water Heart Pavilion
The Water Heart Pavilion is one of the few water theatres in China. Over a hundred films and TV dramas, including 'Dream of the Red Chamber' and 'My Fair Princess', have been shot here. The Water Heart Pavilion's 'Spring and Autumn on the Pot' uses the myth of the celestial mountain Fanghu to enjoy the scenery, play with immortals, watch plays, and listen to music, which is wonderfully delightful
🔸The Number One Mountain in the World - The Rockery
The Pianshi Mountain House is a unique masterpiece of rock stacking by Shi Tao, a great painter from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, with a stone house hidden within its belly; the attached rockery is a group of rockeries over sixty meters long, stacked against the firewall behind the boat hall, with mountain paths above and a valley meeting below
🚩 Highlights
🔸Architecture: Unlike the symmetrical axis concept in foreign gardens, it adopts a natural approach, with pavilions, towers, and buildings irregularly scattered among the man-made or natural landscapes, aiming for the unity of heaven and man
🔸East Meets West: The main building of the Yuxiu Tower is two brick-and-wood structures, both traditional Chinese connected buildings and incorporating Western architectural techniques, see image 8⃣
🔸Scenes of the Four Seasons: Spring for tender buds, summer for ripe greenery, autumn for red maples, winter for frost on branches. The scenes of the four seasons are different, and the joy is endless
🚩 The visitor center at the entrance has free stamps for visitors to use
🚩 Classical gardens are super photogenic for photography, it is recommended to wear modern Chinese-style clothing/Qipao
‼️ It is recommended to avoid weekends and holidays. I went on a Friday and there were not many people. Friends say that the experience is not good on Saturdays and Sundays because it can get very crowded, and sometimes you encounter noisy senior groups (no disrespect to the elderly intended)
Some people ask how to choose between He Garden and Ge Garden
My suggestion is: If you can only choose one, go to Ge Garden. He Garden is a bit small, and perhaps because of the late Qing residence + chaotic times + change of owners, the interior layout is a bit messy. Although East and West are combined, the integration is not very good, a bit abrupt
🔸He Garden to view the flower windows, corridors
🔸Ge Garden to see the rockery (the four-season rockery of spring, summer, autumn, and winter is not to be missed), and the architectural clusters of Ge Garden are very clear, with the residential area, rockery area, and Wanzhu Garden being well-planned (for individual notes on Ge Garden, please go to the homepage~)
🍬 Of course, it's better if you can visit both gardens

Speaking of He Garden
Visiting He Garden, I carefully read the history of the He family. The ancestors of the He family were from Wangjiang, Anhui, next to Leichi, which is near my hometown Huangmei, Hubei, now known as Longgan Lake. The host's father held an official position in Guilin, and I am also currently residing in Guilin; the owner of He Garden once worked in Hande Huangdao, which is also connected to my hometown. Haha, there seems to be a bit of fate.
He Garden is acclaimed as the 'Number One Garden of the Late Qing Dynasty.' The owner, Mr. He Zhishao, had the Piece Stone Mountain House, which is a masterpiece of stacking mountains by the master Shi Tao.
It is a key national cultural heritage site.

I thought Suzhou was beautiful until I visited this place
He Garden, the premier garden of the late Qing Dynasty, also known as 'Jixiao Mountain Villa', 'Lean against the south window to express pride, ascend to the east hillock to let out a long, leisurely sigh.'
The Yuxiu Building in the garden adopts the traditional Chinese concept of connected buildings, while also integrating Western architectural techniques. Thus, in the garden, we can see the different styles displayed by the combination of Chinese and Western cultures. This place is also a filming location for many movies and TV series, such as 'Marrying the Wrong Bride' and 'My Fair Princess'.
Here are a few check-in spots:
🔹Shuixin Pavilion
Use the architectural lines of the pavilion as a picture frame, framing the grand green maples, which is breathtaking.
🔹Fudao Corridor Second Floor
A high angle shot overlooking the water surface, with koi swimming in the lush reflections, and the green maple framed view can also be captured.
🔹Yuxiu Building
Both the first and second floors have flower windows, with better lighting on the second floor, suitable for portrait photography.
🔹Pianshan Stone Room
Roses bloom between the rockery stones, and the glass on the wall can capture the reflection of the flowers.
The ticket price for the park is 46.

🏨Accommodation Guide
This time we stayed at the 【Yangzhou Slender West Lake Lirei Hotel】, a newly opened hotel under the Jinjiang Hotel's Lirei brand, located in the city center. The overall decoration style is very youthful, with a striking red and black color scheme🎈The room is full of a sense of technology‼️
The room is equipped with a Dyson hairdryer, branded toiletries. The house is smart, and there's also a self-service laundry room. In the evening, you can enjoy a special drink on the rooftop.
🛏️I really like their beds, very comfortable, friendly for those who have difficulty sleeping.

The Gardens of Yangzhou - He Garden
The He Garden in Yangzhou is my favorite among all the gardens in Yangzhou, offering the most beautiful scenery in my heart, plus the charm of 'Marrying the Right Man after Boarding the Wrong Sedan Chair'~ What sets it apart from other gardens is that you can walk along the second-floor corridors of He Garden and Ge Garden in Yangzhou, experiencing the garden from the perspective of a protagonist, an indescribably delightful sight.
