The Fortress of Jiayuguan
Getting There - 1hr by train from Zhangye
Attractions - Jiayuguan Pass
Jiayuguan Pass used to be the starting point of the ancient Great Wall built during Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). We spent in Jiayuguan just couple of hours on the way from Zhangye to Dunhuang. We had about 5 hours transit between our trains so we jumped on the Didi and went directly to the Jiayuguan Pass. The ticket costs 80yuan and it allows you to visit both the Pass and the part of the Great Wall. In fact the distance from there to the Great Wall is about 15km, so you can easily visit both attractions in one day.
It was very windy and overcast when we arrived, but the scenery was just incredible. I was impressed by height of walls in the fortress, you can also walk up the wall and enjoy the view of Gobi desert from there.

"The world's first Xiongguan" Jiayuguan, wind and rain for six hundred years
Jiayuguan is the starting point of the west end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty, known as "Chinese and foreign defense", "Hexi first mouth". After six hundred years, the current Jiayuguan is still solid and golden, and the Megatron is square, with strict barriers and integration with the Great Wall. According to the end of the western end of the Great Wall, the male is backed by the rolling Qilian Mountains and stands on the top of Jiayu Mountain.
In the first place, Jiayuguan, all eyes are all khaki, the whole Guancheng is like the pile of loess, but it is the most intact one in the Great Wall.
Approaching Jiayuguan, the gates of the towers are engraved with the three characters "Jiayuguan". A three-storey three-five-family building is built on the gate. His Majesty has Zuo Zongtangs inscription The First Xiongguan in the World. The layout of the building is exquisite and powerful. It echoes with the the worlds first customs Shanhaiguan, which is far away from the distance. Standing on the imposing Jiayuguan City Tower, you can see the Gobi Desert, the mountains and the mountains in the north and the south. The snow on the top of the mountain is clearly visible. Qilian Snow Mountain is vast and vast. For hundreds of years, it has been like a silent guardian, and spent more than 600 years with Jiayuguan.
I saw a piece of grass in front of Jiayuguan, camels and horses moving slowly, and I heard the crisp camel ringing on the ancient Silk Road.
Jiayuguan is like a history-old man who has experienced vicissitudes of life. He is standing between Montenegro and Qilian Mountain in the face of hunting hurricanes. He watches the loneliness of the desert and tells the people who have been here for centuries. In the long years, singing old songs.

A passport is required to enter Jiayuguan, which is a magnificent sight.
📍Attraction address: 5 km west of Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province
🚗Attraction transportation: We drove there.
👍️Must-see attraction: In ancient times, the main procedure for entering Jiayuguan was to hold a "pass." Jiayuguan was a transportation hub on the ancient Silk Road. At that time, people who wanted to enter or leave here had to hold a "pass" to open the gate.
The "pass" was equivalent to a modern pass, passport, or visa, and was a necessary certificate for entering and leaving Jiayuguan. Jiayuguan was located on a strategic passage and was an important channel for exchanges between China and the West, so the entry and exit procedures were extremely strict.
As early as the pre-Qin period, travelers needed to hold a certificate. The "Zhou Li·Di Guan" "Zhang Jie" article records: "All those who pass through the world must have a festival to pass it on. Those without a festival will not pass." The general meaning is that travelers must hold a "festival" and also have a "pass" as an auxiliary certificate. If there is no "festival," they will not be allowed to pass and will be imprisoned. This "festival" is functionally equivalent to today's passport, while the "pass" is a supplementary document for further verification when leaving the pass. At that time, people of different identities and from different places held different "festivals": the princes of the state used "jade festivals," the dukes and ministers of the capital used "horn festivals," the mountain countries used "tiger festivals," the plain countries used "human festivals," the lake countries used "dragon festivals," and so on. At the same time, auxiliary materials with text descriptions, such as "bamboo arrows," were needed for verification.

Driving through the northwest is always accompanied by a sense of history. Jiayuguan, Yangguan, and Dunhuang in Gansu are treasures where Chinese culture and the Silk Road meet. Being there is like traveling through time, feeling the weight of history and the magnificence of nature.
1️⃣ Jiayuguan, known as the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven," is the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall. Standing on the towering city walls, looking out at the endless Gobi Desert, you can feel the hardships and pride of the ancients defending the frontier. Every brick on the city tower tells a story of history, filling you with awe for Chinese civilization.
2️⃣ Yangguan, though the site is in ruins, the poem "Drink another cup of wine, for west of Yangguan there will be no old friends" still seems to echo in your ears. The yellow sand and solitary smoke at sunset outline the desolation and poetry of the Silk Road, intoxicating you.
3️⃣ Dunhuang is undoubtedly the highlight of this trip. The murals and statues of the Mogao Caves are stunning in their artistic achievements and religious atmosphere. The Singing Sand Dunes and Crescent Lake are natural wonders, with the desert and spring coexisting like a tranquil painting. Riding camels and listening to the wind in the sand here, you can experience the unique romance of the desert.

The Great Wall of China is a magnificent structure that stretches for thousands of miles.
📍
Jiayuguan Pass is the western starting point of the Ming Great Wall. It has a history of over 600 years and is known as the "First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven." It is famous for its majestic walls and rich historical culture. It was not only an important military stronghold but also a transportation hub on the Silk Road, and is one of the three wonders of the Great Wall of China.
Jiayuguan Fortress
The heavy gates and ancient walls exude a sense of history. The craftsmanship is exquisite, and the bricks of the walls and carvings of the towers are a testament to the wisdom of the ancients. Standing on the tower and gazing into the distance, one can't help but feel a sense of grandeur.
Overhanging Great Wall
The Overhanging Great Wall is the northern extension of Jiayuguan Fortress. It is built on a mountain ridge at an angle of about 45 degrees, giving it the appearance of hanging in mid-air, hence the name "Overhanging Great Wall." It is not very long, but the latter part is quite steep. It takes about half an hour to climb to the top, and there is another plank road for the descent, allowing you to appreciate the grandeur of nature.
🎫Ticket: CNY 108/person (includes tickets to the Overhanging Great Wall and the First Pier of the Great Wall)

Jiayuguan.
It is known as "the most powerful pass in the world".
It is located in the middle of the narrowest valley 5 kilometers west of Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province. The city walls on both sides of the city pass cross the Gobi Desert and are connected to the Black Mountain Cantilever Great Wall to the north and the No. 1 Pier in the World to the south. It is the westernmost pass of the Ming Great Wall. Jiayuguan is a transportation fortress on the ancient "Silk Road".
Jiayuguan was first built in the fifth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1372). After more than 160 years of construction, it was finally completed in the eighth year of Hongzhi in the Ming Dynasty (1528).
The last large-scale reconstruction project of Jiayuguan was in 2017, which lasted five years and involved an investment of approximately 305 million yuan, aiming to restore its historical majesty.

The Guerilla General's Mansion in Jiayuguan, Gansu Province.
📍Address: Jiayuguan Cultural Relics Scenic Area, Jiayuguan City, Gansu Province
🚗Transportation: We drove there
👍️Must-visit: The Guerilla General's Mansion in Jiayuguan, also known as the Guerilla Yamen, was first built during the Longqing period of the Ming Dynasty and later became the place where the Guerilla Generals of the Ming and Qing Dynasties stationed in Jiayuguan handled military affairs.
The current building was restored and rebuilt in 1987 based on the original building. It is a two-courtyard, three-hall, and four-compound style building, covering an area of 1,755 square meters and a building area of 808 square meters.
In the ancient military history of Jiayuguan, the Guerilla General's Mansion was not only the command center of the Jiayuguan Great Wall defense system, but also the hub of the imperial court's local rule, the inspection of merchants and envoys, and the connection between the Western Regions and Central Asia and various ethnic minorities.
The exhibition of the Guerilla General's Mansion in Jiayuguan is divided into two parts. The front yard is centered on the conference hall, focusing on the scenes of ancient Guerilla Generals and civil and military officials commanding the enemy and issuing passes. The backyard is the place where the Guerilla General and his family live, vividly showing the life of the Guerilla General and his family. The exhibition form is both simple and has a certain ornamental and interesting, making it a highlight of the visit to Jiayuguan.
I went there before National Day.

Jiayuguan: Embracing Nature Amidst Deserts and Snow-Capped Peaks
#closetonature As I stood at the edge of this historic landmark, I was awestruck by the striking contrast between the endless Desert and the distant Qilian Mountains, their snowy peaks gleaming under the clear blue sky.
Walking through the desert plains, the vast, open landscape felt both desolate and majestic. The crisp, dry air carried the scent of earth, and the wind swept across the sands, creating ever-shifting patterns. In the distance, the snow-covered Qilian range provided a dramatic backdrop, their towering presence a constant reminder of nature’s power. The fusion of barren desert and pristine snow created an awe-inspiring scene, where the silence of the desert is met by the distant hum of the mountain winds.
Jiayuguan is a place where history and nature blend seamlessly, offering a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of extremes—harsh desert landscapes juxtaposed with the purity of alpine peaks. It’s a serene and humbling reminder of the intimate relationship between humans and the vast, untamed world around them.
