It was a very nice add to our Colorado trip. Great Sand Dunes National Park was an hour and half away from Colorado Springs, the second largest city in Colorado. You can rent a sand board for $20 per day and just have fun. You can also hike to the highest dunes, which may take you a while since it is harder to walk on sand than road, and the altitude is about 5000 feet. Definitely a great experience to have. There was only one shop, restaurant, and hotel nearby owned by same people. I recommend staying in Colorado Springs instead of there unless you want to watch the night sky.

The Great Sand Dunes in Colorado are some of the most impressive on earth. Towering mountains of sand sit right in front of a Mountainous backdrop.

Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of the most unique landscapes in the U.S. Located in southern Colorado, it features the tallest sand dunes in North America, with some towering over 700 feet high. The dunes sit against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, creating a striking contrast between the golden sand and snow-capped peaks.
Outdoor adventurers can hike the dunes, a challenging yet rewarding experience. The sand can make hiking strenuous, but the vastness and beauty of the dunes make it worth the effort. For those seeking a thrill, sandboarding and sledding are popular activities. The park also offers opportunities for stargazing, as it’s a designated Dark Sky Park, and the night skies are incredible, with minimal light pollution.
In addition to the dunes, the park features wetlands, grasslands, and forests, making it a diverse area for exploration. The Medano Creek that flows in the spring offers a refreshing spot to wade and splash, while the foothills and mountain trails provide excellent hiking and wildlife spotting opportunities. Whether you’re an experienced adventurer or a casual outdoor enthusiast, Great Sand Dunes offers something for everyone.
