Xiamen : From UNESCO heritage sites to World class Towers

Spent 48 hours discovering the city of Xiamen in October 2024. An inpromptu plan without much planning. To my surprise there are just too many sites that need more time to explore. Went to Gulangyu, which is also a World heritage sites. Other than the hassle of getting tickets which are inflated in my opinion, the sites are just amazing. The historical values are aplenty. The ferry ride was a quick 20 minutes going over, and about 6minutes on the returning trip. Be careful if you are leaving after 5:45pm as the ferry will take you to another dock, and it will be loaded with locals. It is a little over crowded in my opinion. Overall, spent half day in gulangyu was rather relaxing. It will be better to spend a night there if you have the time. Went to visit a few Toulou. It is just amazing how these traditional houses can accommodate up to 800 and more individuals at times. The engineering behind is unbelievable. Just got to see it to appreciate its mere wonders. Just be extra careful which tours you purchase as some does not come with the entrance fees. I paid extra rmb230 for three different entrance tickets on top of the transportation cost. To do a. One day trip from Xiamen is a little too rush. Spent almost 2:30hours on the road one way. The time can be better spent spending a night near the sites. There are plenty of places of stay. But to travel from Xiamen can be a little too tiring in my opinion. Overall, I am still very satisfied with the visit. Will come back again. And all staying in this beautiful place has the same surname from the same ancestry. Amazing how these places can house almost 1000 people for the big tulou and on average 200-300 people for the average tulou

After reading many travel guides, I finally chose Chuxi Ancient Building, for two reasons. First, it is the most convenient to drive to, and you can also see the sporadic ancient buildings along the way. Second, Chuxi Ancient Building has preserved the most original appearance of the ancient buildings. The key to this trip is to make sure to go up the mountain to the viewing platform, where you can see the full view of the ancient building cluster. If you go early, you can also see the curling smoke from the houses. The Yongding Tulou Cluster nestles against the mountains and is lush with greenery, facing south and north, arranged in an orderly fashion. I visited yongding tulou in April with my families. Worth a visit if you go to Fujian Xiamen! Is a heritage site whereby 700hundred of families staying in one earth building. The structure is well preserved by the Hakka people. It was a pleasant and joyful trip and we enjoy the scenic! We book a private bus and travel about 3 hours from An Xi village. The structure consist of 4 rounds and 1 square building. It called 4 dishes and 1 soup. This is very interesting and I recommend tourist to visit this place. "Four stories high, four rings of buildings, four hundred rooms up and down, circle within circle, ring within ring, standing through the vicissitudes of three hundred years." I took a self-driving trip to the Fujian Tulou during the Spring Festival and visited the Fujian Tulou King Chengqi Building and the surrounding tulou. Chengqi Building is located in Gaobei Village, Gaotou Township, Yongding County, Fujian Province. It first appeared in the "Chinese Folk Houses" stamps issued by China in 1986. It is said to have been founded during the Ming Dynasty's Chongzhen period and was not completed until the Qing Dynasty's Kangxi period, taking half a century. To the west of Chengqi Building is the Qiaofu Building, which was built in 1962. It is a three-story single-ring round building. There is a circle of walls outside the building, with an outer gate on the wall, forming a courtyard. This place is also a filming location for the movie "Big Fish & Begonia". This building is famous for producing 11 PhDs, hence it is also known as the Doctor's Building. To the east of Chengqi Building is a square tulou, Shize Building, which was built during the Qing Dynasty's Jiaqing period and was later destroyed and rebuilt. The floor at the entrance inside the building is a model of ancient coins, and the building's design of one door, two wells, three halls, and four staircases is very distinctive.

Yongding Tulou Waking up in the morning, the sun is shining. As planned, we set off for Meizhou, and visited Yongding Tulou on the way. What we saw along the way: 1. Old Tulou group. 2. New use of old Tulou. 3. New buildings imitating Tulou. There are three points of interest. From an architectural perspective, Tulou is a rammed earth wall building, mostly for defensive needs. The walls are more than one meter thick, the first and second floors cannot have windows, and accordingly cannot be inhabited. The first floor is the living room, kitchen and bathroom, the second floor is for storage, and the third and fourth floors are for living. When one household builds it, it must be grouped and followed, so it is often in groups. The volume of Tulou is between Kaiping Diaolou and Western castles, but the techniques are completely different, which is indeed a great invention of mankind. In terms of enclosed area, square has a large area, and the internal division is easy, so ordinary families can enjoy it. The circumference of the circle is short, but the internal space division needs to be on a large radius to be reasonable, so it is mostly used by large families. Longyan has more than 300 round earth houses and more than 2000 square ones. The Zhencheng Tulou we visited this time, in the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the wealthy businessman Lin Renshan passed away, and his son Lin Hongchao, a designer, inherited his father's business, personally designed and supervised the construction. The round double circle is 10 meters high and divided into four layers, with a diameter of about 60 meters. The outer circle is divided into eight residential courtyards, and the inner circle courtyard is used for guests. The separation of the family courtyard uses the traditional solid brick mountain wall technique. The south side of the outer circle opens the main door, and the inner circle has an outer hall (official hall) and an inner hall (ancestral hall), and the north of the outer circle opens the incense hall, forming the main axis of social interaction. There are corridors running through the inner and outer circles, Yin and Yang two wells, and they are connected to the ear rooms on the left and right, forming a line of life and production. Convenient and practical. From a sociological perspective, the ancient county yamen were all small governments, and family governance played an important role. Zhencheng Building is inhabited by four Lin brothers, who pass on farming and reading, have a strong family style, and each hall hangs plaques and couplets, which can be savored carefully. The couplets engraved on both sides of the gate: "Doing national affairs, reading sage books". The couplet in front of the official hall: "Zhen is a family voice, it's good to be filial and fraternal; some achievements, starting from diligence and thrift". There are two on the inner wall of the official hall: one is Lin Hongchao's own book "Speech and behavior, good roots of blessings"; the other is "People have always been respectful and long-lived, and the articles have always been correct and surprising". The couplet of the Guanyin shrine in the back hall: "Zhen brushes the spirit and participates in the mysterious truth; Cheng achieves the fruit of Bodhi. Observe at will." The couplet of the back hall: "Zhen works, there is no leisure time, young time, strong time, old time, always need to work hard; Chengming is not easy, family affairs, national affairs, world affairs, everything needs to be cared about." From the perspective of cultural relics, Zhencheng Building is one of the four earth buildings in Yongding that have obtained national key cultural relic protection. It is not the oldest or the largest, but it is the best preserved; and the official hall and ancestral hall are all Western-style, with unique styles. Lin Hongchao once served as a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of China and a member of the Central Committee of the Republic of China, with a wide range of social interactions. The plaque "Li Dang Guan Xing" engraved on the door lintel was written by Li Yuanhong, the president of the Republic of China. The couplet in the official hall "People have always been respectful and long-lived, and the articles have always been correct and surprising", is from the hand of Hui Shiqi, a famous scholar of the Qing Dynasty.
