Me and my girlfriends went on the ‘True Crime Tour’ at Fremantle prison and if you love true crime this is definitely something for you! there was only 4 of us as a group and we turned out to be the only ones who had booked the tour so we essentially got a private tour of our own! the lady who guided us was lovely and gave us all the juicy true crime we wanted. In 1850, the first of almost 10000 male convicts arrived as a labour force to help build the Swan River Colony. Their first project was to build their own home - the Convict Establishment - later renamed Fremantle Prison. Fremantle Prison is the largest convict built structure in WA and the most intact convict establishment in the southern hemisphere. By the end of the convict system, only 62 convicts remained inside the prison, built to hold 1000 men. Fremantle Prison was handed over to local authorities and, upon the closure of Perth Gaol in 1888, became the State’s primary place of confinement for men, women and children. Decommissioned as an operating maximum security gaol from 1887 to 1991, Fremantle Prison operated continuously as a place of incarceration and punishment for 136 years. In 2010, Fremantle Prison became the first building in WA to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is one of eleven sites that together form the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property.

#australiatrip Tunnel tour is top notch. We had a pretty interesting group, so that made it a bit more fun. They could do with more shade here, It'd be nice if they planted some trees, even just in large planter boxes. The Cafe had a decent range of vegetarian food, which was surprising. They even had better selection than most of the cafes in Fremantle. Good work. I'd highly recommend doing the tunnel tour, and do it now before all the water drys up!

It is also a World Heritage site and runs various tours that range from 1-3 hours daily. In the tour, visitors will be able to walk into the cells, visit the chapels, as well as hear the history and fascinating stories from the excellent guides. One of the cells even had sketches on the wall - done by one very artistic convict during his time in the prison.
