Relaxing by the pool of an evening overlooking the lake is fantastic. It really gives you chance to enjoy the scenery and take a break. There are many ways to enjoy seeing the lake from bike rides, road trips, and lakes cruises. You can even get a great view of the lake from the old towns or coffee shops that surround it. Self-driving itinerary for 2 days at Erhai Lake in Dali | Accommodation and sightseeing guide . I have driven to Erhai Lake four times and summarized that there are a total of five suitable accommodation areas in the west and east of the lake. . 1️⃣Caicun. The advantage of living here is that it is located in the Haixi Ecological Corridor. 3km south of Caicun is the "Longgan Wharf", and 9km north is the "Banxi S Bend". These places are particularly beautiful and you can see the sunrise in the morning. Motor vehicles are not allowed in the Haixi Corridor, so you can walk or ride a bike. The disadvantage of choosing to stay in Caicun is that it is very close to Dali Ancient City, only 4km away. If you stayed in the ancient city for the first two days and drove here, it would be a bit awkward. 2️⃣Xizhou Ancient Town. The advantage of living in Xizhou is the quietness and the feeling of being in a small Bai village. It is also close to Haishetan Park, only 3km away, which makes it convenient to visit the "Couple Tree" for a check-in. I have stayed here twice, and at night, the village is relatively boring, so the only option is to take a walk by the seaside. 3️⃣Shuanglang Ancient Town. This is a scenic area that "combines beauty and talent". Although it is very commercialized, whether you are looking at Erhai Lake, watching the sunset, overlooking Cangshan Mountain, or strolling through the ancient town, tasting food, and enjoying coffee, it is worth your stay. There are two accommodation options in Shuanglang: if you want to be quiet in the bustling area, choose Dajian Village; if you like fireworks and want to go to bars at night, choose Shuanglang Village. 4️⃣Wasezhen. It is close to Xiaoputuo, about 4km away. In winter, there are more people watching seagulls here than seagulls themselves. Accommodation options in this area are limited and can be considered as a backup option. 5️⃣Ideal Country. Known as the "Santorini of China", it is a group of buildings on the mountain slope, with a sense of hierarchy like "terraces". There are very few hotels and homestays inside, and the prices are also very high. . After discussing accommodations, let's take a look at the itinerary. If you are staying in Shuanglang, my suggestion is: ☑️On the first day, you can rent a "little donkey" for cycling. One of the must visit places in Dali is Erhai lake. The best way to enjoy the lake is taking a bike ride along the lake. There are many bikes, you pay the fee and the deposit to locals and you have a bike for three hours. Dali - Erhai lake and the mountains

Dali city is a county level city that actually encompasses all the settlements surrounding the Erhai Lake. The modern central part is located in the south and is your most probable entry point since the bus and train stations are located there. That part is also probably the one you will be least interested in. Although it's coastal area does have nice views and some fancy hotels most travelers head out to one of the smaller places around the lake, most notably the Dali Old Town. Dali Old town is technically a tourist center and most travelers choose to stay in or around it. The famed three pagodas as well as the starting point for climbing CangShan are all located near the Old Town. The town itself is nice enough and rather big. The fact that it is not pedestrianized and that pavements are very often blocked with stalls and parked cars does make it a bit hectic, especially in the high season, so staying on the fringes of it is probably a better option. To be honest, most of the things we wanted to see and do In Dali had nothing to do with the Old Town itself. It is a good place to eat and drink though, although 'tourist surcharge' will most certainly apply. If you have not arrived by car, renting an e-bike for exploring short distances is actually a good idea. The three of us got on one e-bike and squeezed it out of all of its juice while exploring around. So much so, that we actually had to recharge on the way because the declared 70km range probably did not refer to a 160kg+ weight-load. Great way to discover surrounding villages that offer a bit more authenticity and bit less crowds that the Dali Old town.Most of the town pictures you see above(5-6-7) are actually from XiZhou (喜洲古镇) a smaller village further north really worth a visit. Quite a lot of people also like renting one of the pink convertibles and I suppose it is a good way to reach farther as well as take that ever so important Instagram photos. I would come here again. The place does offer some real peace and quiet as well a serene landscape, even though it is often hidden by noise of the crowds and commerce. #wintergetaway
