Cheung Chau is a charming island located in the southwestern part of Hong Kong. It offers a unique blend of traditional and modern attractions, making it a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists.
Known for its laid-back atmosphere and picturesque scenery, Cheung Chau offers a refreshing escape from the bustling city life. The island is famous for its beautiful beaches, including Tung Wan and Kwun Yam Wan, where visitors can relax, swim, and soak up the sun. The clear turquoise waters and sandy shores provide a tranquil setting for beach lovers.
One of the highlights of Cheung Chau is its vibrant local culture. The island is known for its annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival, a traditional celebration featuring colorful parades, lion dances, and the famous bun tower climbing competition. This cultural event showcases the island's rich heritage and is a sight to behold.
Exploring the narrow streets of Cheung Chau is a delightful experience. The island is dotted with charming temples, seafood restaurants, and quaint shops selling local delicacies and souvenirs. Visitors can savor fresh seafood dishes, such as steamed fish and spicy squid, at the waterfront eateries.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Cheung Chau offers scenic hiking trails that lead to stunning viewpoints overlooking the island and its surrounding waters. The Mini Great Wall, a section of the trail, offers panoramic vistas and is a popular spot for photography.
In summary, Cheung Chau is a captivating island that showcases the best of Hong Kong's natural beauty and cultural traditions. It is a perfect getaway for those seeking relaxation, outdoor adventures, and an immersive experience in the local culture.

Trendy Seafood Restaurant, a Variety of Set Meal Dishes
Restaurant: Trendy Seafood Restaurant (Cheung Chau)
Address: Shop C, G/F, 13 North Social Housing Road, Cheung Chau
Apart from mango glutinous rice dumplings and giant fish balls, seafood is also a must-try when visiting Cheung Chau😋. During the Easter holidays, Cheung Chau can get quite crowded. After disembarking, head to the restaurant to fill your stomach. From the pier, turn left and walk along the coast to find this bustling Trendy Seafood Restaurant🐟. The restaurant occupies several areas, most of which are outdoor seating⛱️. It's quite chill to enjoy the seafood while not too hot, with the sea breeze💨 and the beautiful seascape of Cheung Chau🍃.
In addition to the menu, you can also buy fresh seafood from the adjacent fish stall and have the restaurant cook it for you. You can choose from various cooking styles such as steamed, braised, stir-fried, etc.✌️, and there are also meat stir-fries, vegetables, and fried noodles and rice.
The set lunch starts at $188, and you can choose from dozens of seafood dishes, ranging from 2-12 dishes📝. Of course, some require an additional charge. This time, I ordered 2 dishes for a favorable price of $188, which also included a complimentary corn and fish maw soup and bok choy. There is an additional service charge on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, but it's worth it👍🏽.
✝️Seafood Tofu Pot
If you want to taste a variety of seafood at once, this seafood pot is perfect😉. It contains shrimp, squid, and fish fillets, and when served, there is a burst of fresh aroma🌊. The tofu is lightly fried on the outside, remaining soft on the inside, and is served with a generous portion of celery, straw mushrooms, ginger, and scallions.
✝️Ginger and Scallion Braised Chicken
The chicken served in a hot pot is aromatic. Although some pieces were not fully cooked and had a bit of blood🤏, the meat was still tender and delicate after marinating and braising, and very flavorful🍗. The onions, ginger, and scallions are stir-fried until fragrant before being added to the pot, making the dish full of wok hei. Each piece of chicken is covered with a savory and appetizing sauce, making it perfect with rice🍚.

Hiking at Cheung Chau Island in HongKong
Spend half a day to hike and walk around the island of Cheung Chau despite the rain in Jul 2023. Highly recommend to try the fruit mochi (mango was awesome!) and the rice roll with dough fritter (dip with sesame sauce). Plenty of supermarket and 7-11 near the jetty so you can grab water easily. Would have loved to come earlier in the morning to hike and have lunch. There wasnt any great stores that caught my attention for dinner so we went back to main HK island instead. Just take the ferry with octopus card. Really convenient! #cheungchau #hongkong #naturelover #hiking #ferry #food

Cheung Chau island
Getting There - Best way to get there is by a ferry. I would suggest the fast ferry, it's about 15-20 minutes faster than the normal ferry and it takes around 30 minutes.
Attractions - It's a cute tropical island, with a variety of street food, restaurants and souvenir shops. If you walk across the island you can get to the beach, it's about 10 minute walk from the ferry.
Food & Restaurants - I recommend trying mango mochi, frozen watermelon and fish balls.
Shopping - Island souvenirs

Half-day Trip to Dumbbell Island
#wecreate
One of outlying islands to explore if you are in Hong Kong is Cheng Chau. It is called dumbbell Island due to the shape. I came here with a friend from overseas in the afternoon to evening as we really wanted to enjoy the beach and sunset, then ended the half-day trip enjoying seafood at local restaurant.
We took ordinary ferry from Central to get to this island. It was around 50-minute trip. Then, stroll around the main road of the Island, before go picnic at the beach and swim for around one hour. We are lucky as we can enjoy the beautiful sunset from the beach. It’s a compliment for our trip.

Little escape from Hong Kong to Cheung Chau
I would highly recommend taking some time to visit Cheung Chau if you’re a frequent traveler to HK and want a quieter space for relaxation. The hustle and bustle is reduced to a few main streets and the curved roadways built on the hillsides offer a feeling of nostalgia. the beaches are generally quite quiet and there is a nice hike to the pirate’s cave nearby, which you can draw into quite easily as long as you have a flashlight (phone torch works well enough).
There are quite a few seafood stalls but by far, the best was New Baccarat at the far end of the seafood stall road by the water. Other delicious food places included La Eat for Singaporean fusion food (would recommend the steak - salted and crisped to perfection with some homemade sauce) and also Kyoudai Izakaya (extremely fresh sashimi, quirky owners, delicious angus beef and okra/bacon skewers with udon). No. 11 is also a nice Western style breakfast spot with juicy burgers and a range of coffee options. nestled in a small square full of local passerbys.
Travelling to Cheung Chau is fairly straightforward from Centra Pier 5 but check the schedule careful#cafe#cafe#beachlife for the fast ferry (about 30 mins) and the slow ferry (about an hour). I recommend taking the fast ferry. On the schedule, the times surrounded by blue bubbles are the slow ferries.

Cheung Chau Island, Hong Kong
Cheung Chau It’s a beautiful small island in hongkong , great to spend a beautiful day, easy to reach, and beautiful spots to entertain you!
Getting There - (Very easy)
Take ferry pier number 5 from Hong Kong central (there is ferry from early morning until 12 am every 40 min)
Attractions -
1)Take a walk in the small center of the city, to see the islands local monuments
2)Rent a bike, there are places near the ferry where you can rent it, to enjoy a ride near the sea coast.
3)Fishing; it is possible to fish on the sand and rock beaches, some days have the luck of catch mullets fishes and sea bass, some day have just small fishes. Ps. Need to bring your own equipment.
4)Enjoy a sunny day on the beautiful beaches, with clean sands and water.
Hotels -
There are only six hotels in the island, with and average price between 400 to 800 hkd, in hot seasons better to book as early you can, to avoid full house.
Food & Restaurants -
There is street food local Hongkongnese, and several local seafood restaurants, all the restaurants offers fresh seafood, fishes, clams, lobsters, quality is good and the price is very acceptable.
For the fresh quality and cheap price I recommend
New Baccarat Seafood Restaurant (15 min walking from the ferry)
Shopping - While you walk from the ferry to the beach, and I’m the Center of the islands you will found many local souvenirs places, typical Cheung Chau home decorations shops, place where to buy summer lady dress shops and huts for the beach.
You won’t found high brands shops, but if you look for something local to remember the island, shopping won’t disappoint you .

The best of old-world charm and trendy attractions in Hong Kong - Cheung Chau
Cheung Chau is a small, dumb-bell-shaped island, so-called 'long island’ 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) southwest of Hong Kong Island. It is well-known for its distinctive waterfront, crammed with gently rocking moored fishing boats and seafood restaurants.
The island’s sandy beaches, instagrammable cafes and scenic family-friendly hiking trail have always been appealing to those keen to escape the hectic city life.
Hope you like this post if you found this useful. Cheers :)

徒步遊覽路線: 😍
🔆Visiting this sea view trail on Cheung Chau Island, you can disembark at the Cheung Chau Ferry Pier first, and then navigate the Cheung Chau Torii. On the way, you will pass the houses, markets and beaches of Cheung Chau, and then the number of people will gradually decrease. When you reach the top of the mountain, you can almost enjoy the entire sea view .
🔆After arriving at the viewing pavilion at the highest point behind the torii gate in Changzhou, you can go down according to your physical strength. If you have enough physical strength, you can go to the beach at the bottom of the mountain to play in the water and then return the same way.
🔆In addition to seeing the magnificent sea view, this trail can also go down the mountain from a height * to return to the torii gate, choose the trail leading to Guitao Garden, overlooking Cheung Chau Island, the beach, villages and fishing boats are so beautiful.
🔆There are roads all the way, and the slope is also small. After going down the mountain, it is a coastal road with few people and beautiful scenery. The unmanned beach on the roadside is very suitable for watching the sunset.
✅If you have more time, it is also good to go to West Bay on Cheung Chau Island,

Visit Cheung Chau!
Cheung Chau is an island in the Islands District of Hong Kong that my family and I, as local residents of Lantau Island, visit every year. If you do decide to visit Hong Kong, then Cheung Chau is one of the Islands that I definitely recommend that you spend time visiting.
The Island is one of my grandparents’ favourite places to visit when visiting us in Hong Kong, and they have missed it greatly after not being able to visit since COVID started in 2019. They have always enjoyed arriving at the Island and going to have a coffee at the nearby Eggenberg Café BnB, before having a relaxing walk and enjoying fresh seafood at Hing Lok Restaurant for lunch.
We have also enjoyed spending some time at the stalls and shops where you can buy some unique handcrafted goods, clothing and local foods.
I have personally enjoyed the time that I spend at the beach just a few months ago. We stayed until sunset and were able to catch some beautiful views on the ferry.
The Island can be accessed by fast ferry Central or Inter-Island (Peng Chau - Mui Wo - Chi Ma Wan - Cheung Chau) from Mui Wo (you can reach Mui Wo by bus from Tung Chung MTR Station).
There are a number of places you can stay on the Island, including a few little holiday homes. There is one main hotel called The Warwick, but I have not personally had any experience there, so I can not offer any feedback.

Rehydrate Yourself With The Sweet and Cold Shaved Bing Sutt
The cafe is called Cheung Chau Bing Sutt, located at 19C Pak She Praya Road. Many people were queueing for their turn as the cafe is not too big. They have indoor and outdoor seating you can choose. I tried Bailey and Thai milk tea flavor as I saw they were the recommended dish there.
Bailey smells really good (like true Bailey should be). The Thai milk tea also nice as you can taste the unique Thai tea flavor.
As sometimes the weather is still too hot, this cafe feels like an oasis for us. Do try if you are already in neighborhood as surely the quality can compete with the one in the city.

Enjoy the cool autumn winds with sands between your fingers
The weather is now cooler than the peak summer in June or July, but not too cool as January. So it is best for enjoying beaches in HK before winter comes.
One of two beaches in Cheung Chau Island is Tung Wan Beach. From the ferry pier you can walk straight at Tung Wan road passing some food stall selling shaved ice, desserts or the iconic jumbo fish ball.
The beach is quite clean and the waves are not too harsh. Many people decided to swim or play in the water. But as I didn’t prepare to swim, I only put my legs on the water to enjoy the cold sea water. It is also fun to do some treasure hunt to find pretty shells.
Make sure you bring a mat for you to sit on the beach and plastic bag for your garbage to keep the beach clean!
Going to Cheung Chau is always a good time because you can do much more than beach or eating! You can walk along the ferry pier, rent a bike or do some hiking! So if you think you have enough lazing around on the beach, you don’t need to waste too much time traveling to do another activity.

Love Lock at Cheung Chau
If we talk about Cheung Chau, seafood or beaches might be the first ones to come in mind. But Cheung Chau offers more things to see and visit, and one of them being a four walls of bright and colorful love locks.
The love lock walls is going to be on your way from the ferry pier to Tung Wan Beach. If you would like to put your own love lock there you can buy in an art shop opposite the walls.

Exploring Cheung Chau
#hkinsider
Cheng Chau island is located 10km of Southwest of Hong Kong Island. The island shape is like a dumbbell and is famous for the local food destination, culture, and natural attractions such as beaches and hikes.
There are around 11 temples on the island, and the Bun festival in May is one of the most significant events on this island.
Enjoy the cafe on the beach, and delicious local seafood restaurant is what most visitors do on this island.
To reach this island, visitors can take a ferry from a few locations, such as Central, Peng Chau, Mui Wo, or Chi Ma Wan.
I recommend taking from Central at Pier No.5 because it has more frequent ferry departure to the island. The journey takes around 40 minutes.

Spectacular Fall Sunset
#fallingforfall
Why is sunset so good in the fall? Scientists said it is because the sun's rays hit more air molecules, the blue light gets scattered more quickly, and the orange and red stand out more.
I witness a spectacular fall sunset from the pier on Cheng Chau Island. It made me speechless. It was too gorgeous to be caught by my phone camera. Because of the short day during autumn, I was able to enjoy a more extended sunset. It appeared until the universe turned dark and seemed lower to the sky horizon. I should hunt other autumn sunsets in other places.

An interesting island of Hong Kong
Getting There - We have to take a ferry to get to cheung chau island, which takes about an hour from central pier.
Attractions - nice beach, local eateries (mango mochi, seafood), a bicycle ride, and a very relaxing vibe
Hotels - I have stayed in the island half day so never got to experience staying a night. but i am sure there is a great place with a view to spend a night here in Cheung chau!
Food & Restaurants - there are many seafood restaurants near the local market and pier. You can also taste some hong kong style snacks such as fishballs, curried intestines in the local market.
Shopping - there are some souvenir shops you can find in the market.
if it is your second or third time in Hong Kong, I definitely recommend to visit some of small islands near the main place, like Cheung chau!

A short getaway to the ‘dumb-bell’ island.
Cheng Chau Island has the nickname ‘Dumb bell’ due to its shape. This Island is perhaps the most colorful and happening among other outlying Islands in Hong Kong.
To reach the Island, you can take the ferry from Central (Pier No.5). It has a good frequency. Keep in mind that the fast ferry takes around 35 minutes to reach Cheung Chau, whereas the ordinary ferry can take up to 60 minutes.
Once you arrive, you can explore the island on foot or by bicycle. You can find bicycle rentals around the pier, costing around HKD.50 a day. But if you want to hike up and see the beauty of the island from above, then you do not need a bicycle. There is a hiking trail on this Island where you can explore the beauty of the upper part of this Island.
Apart from hiking, you can also enjoy the beaches. There are two beaches nearby the ferry pier, Cheng Chau Tung Wan Beach and Kwun Yam beach, located next to the first one.
Eating seafood and delicious local snacks is a must on this island. The island is famous for its mochi (especially the mango mochi), frozen watermelon slices, and fishballs. Just stop by numerous vendors and try whatever tickles your fancy.
I was on the Island the whole day, hiking up a bit, strolling through the beach, enjoying seafood and local mango ice cream, and the worth part was enjoying the sunset. I love it a lot!

Home-Style Accommodation for Rest and Relax
#hkinsider
Bethany is a perfect place for relaxing from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. It is in Cheng Chau, Fa Peng Road, a 20-minutes walk from Cheng Chau ferry pier.
Bethany has three units cottage, house, and lodge. The home-style facilities, surrounded by beautiful green gardens and breathtaking sea views, are an oasis—the best place to feel tranquil and peaceful.
The accommodation is clean and beautifully designed. It is comfortable for personal, group, or family rest and retreat. The warm hospitality of the staff completed your stay. I did enjoy the home environment and its tranquil and beautiful surroundings. It made my refreshing day!
Bethany does not charge you for using the facility but is open for donation. You can confirm when making a reservation how long you will stay and whether it includes meals. I got lunch, and it was fresh and yummy!

One day trip at Cheung Chau Island
Cheung Chau is one of the outlying island in Hong Kong that only accessible by ferry. To go there, you will need to go to Central Pier (if you go by MTR, take exit A Central and follow the signs on the footbridge). You need to go to ferry pier no 5 and take ferry to go to the island. It can take 30-45 minutes depend on what ferry you are using.
There are lots of things you can do on the island:
1. exploring the neighborhood if this is your first time there
2. eat local food like mango mochi, Cheung Chau sweet bun, frozen fruit, and jumbo fish balls
3. rent a bike and go around
4. hiking (I never do hiking but many people do it there)
5. eat seafood
6. spend time on the beaches on the island
Make sure you plan ahead and come early in the morning so you can do lots of stuff there

Affordable Seafood Feast at Cheung Chau
HK is one the places that eating seafood will cost a lot of your money, but Cheung Chau might be an exception in this case. Just walk near the Cheung Chau Pier and you will find a row of seafood restaurant that offers some seriously affordable seafood dishes. This time the restaurant we went call Hung Lok restaurant.
The amount you need to pay will depend on how many dishes you order, not the type of the dishes itself. We ordered 5 dishes (whatever is in the menu) and it costs 408 HKD in total. And you will also get free corn soup and vegetables of the day.

Affordable Seafood Dinner at Cheng Chau Seafront.
#hkinsider
There are some seafood restaurants you can try in Cheng Chau. One of them is Hung Lok Restaurant, located near the ferry pier. Stroll along the road on the left of the dock for around five minutes, and you can find the restaurant facing the sea.
The restaurant offers seafood packages at affordable prices, started from three to twelve dishes. I came here with friends for dinner, and we chose five dishes that cost HK$408. We got two kinds of crabs, shrimp, abalone, and squid, with corn soap and vegetables as a compliment. The cheapest seafood I have ever had in Hong Kong.

Glamping staycation in Cheung Chau Island
Cheung Chau West Park is located in Cheung Chau West Bay. To get to the Cheung Chau Pier, you can take the next public pier and transfer to the $10 per person to the boat directly, or turn right after getting off the boat and walk along the coast for about 20 minutes. The entrance area of the park is very large. Except for the left side, you can bring your own camp. There are many camping areas in the entrance area of the West Park.
The Forest where I stayed is a tent with air-conditioning, a bed and a bathroom. The tent space is large, except for There is a double bed on the left and a sofa bed in the middle , it can accommodate 4 people. The bathroom inside the tent has hot and cold water for showering, and there are two types of barbecue grills outside the tent. The entrance to the tent is generally clean, and the barbecued food tastes good. The breakfast consisted of simple bread, corn flakes, and a bag of doll snacks for one person.

Exploring Cheung Chau 👀
Cheung Chau is one of the islands in Hong Kong 🇭🇰, which used to be a fishing village 🚤. With the strong support of the government, as well as the cooperation of the villagers 👩🏻🌾, it has now developed into a well-developed island. In addition to public facilities such as hospitals 🏪, police stations 👮♀️, and markets, all kinds of shops can be found everywhere, improving the living standards of the people 🧑🏻🍳 and promoting the continuous development of tourism.
Although Cheung Chau is now filled with shops 🏤, the traditional fishing industry still flourishes here. Most tourists 😺 visit the local markets to buy seafood 🦞 and cook it themselves or have it prepared by the restaurants 🐟. This unique way of handling seafood 🦈 has become a well-known feature of Cheung Chau.
Traveling here can help you relieve stress 😎, enjoy life away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and experience the unique flavor of the fishing village, which is different from the glitz and glamor of the urban areas 😗.

Kid’s Friendly Hike at Cheung Chau Island
Finally having some time to share this special route we took after Cheung Po Tsai Cave. It’s a one way to Cheung Po Tsai Cave and back, so you could go to the cave first, then take another route back.
After the cave, walk back the way you came, until you see a stairs (right opposite of the stalls where people put down “stuff” for sale) on your right, quite steep down. It’ll lead the way to a walking path right behind of Sai Yuen Adventure Camp. When it’s low tide, you could keep walking, across Po Yue Wan and head up to the direction of Reclining Rock. From here, it’s pavements all the way along Cheung Chau Family Walk. At the junction near Pak Tso Wan, take left turn and continue walking back to the town.
Distance: probably 3km
Duration: less than 1.5 hours inc photo time
Scenic: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ of 5
Difficulty: 2 out of 5
It’s a short and easy walk, toddler can definitely walk their way without having to carry at all. We have a 2.5 year old amateur walker with us, and still managed to finish the route in less than 1.5 hours.
How to get to the starting point:
After arriving at Cheung Chau Pier, you have 3 options~
1. Take the boat at the pier next to the Ferry Pier, tell them you’re heading to Sai Wan 西灣. Your hike begins right next to the Sai Wan Pier.
2. Take a walk heading to Sai Wan direction, which is on your right once you are out from the pier. It’s approximately 20-25 minutes walk.
3. Rent a tricycle or something, lock it at the Sai Wan Pier or somewhere there and pick up when you’re done, cycle back to return your bike.

Cheung Chau day trip
Cheung Chau is an island located around an hour's ferry ride away from Central. It feels like a small village compared to the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. The village island is easily doable in a day. I recommend arriving early and leaving after dinner to get the most of the island. The island is easily walkable but bikes are also a great way to get around. Apart from hiking trails, the island also has some nice beaches, complete with facilities. The island is also known for its snacks, such giant fish balls, mango mochies and Ping on buns. They are all very tasty and great souvenirs for your city dwellers. The slower atmosphere is a good relief from the busyness of the city. #hongkong #getaway #citytravel

Tung Wan Beach
Earlier this month, we went Trio Beach 🏖 (refer to post : https://www.facebook.com/113508473635882/posts/375339400786120/), the next weekend, we book a night at Bela Vista Villa with K’s BFF to celebrate their 6th birthday.
We parked at Rumsey Street Multi-storey Carpark just 10 mins walk from the pier. Took the standard ferry to Cheung Chau Island. We prefer the standard over express because of the vip deck at standard, it’s comfortable enough for the 50 mins ride, providing bigger space with vending machines, tables and chairs.
Bela Vista Villa was just 3 minutes walk from Tung Wan Beach. It’s perfect for a beach getaway. There are toilets and shower areas. Water quality ain’t bad, we saw fishes swimming next to us and even flying fish jumps out right in front of us while we are swimming to the floating platform.
