Kairouan: The Aghlabid Basins
A two and a half hour drive from the city of Tunis 🚗, and you arrive at Kairouan, one of the four holy cities of Islam.
Built in the year 670 AD, it is one of the four holy sites of Islam. It features the famous Great Mosque of Kairouan, the 'Three Doors' Mosque, and the Aghlabid Basins, among others. Tunisian Muslims believe that making a pilgrimage to Kairouan seven times is equivalent to making one pilgrimage to Mecca.
The Aghlabid Basins, ancient water reservoirs that are still well-preserved today, first purify the water in a small pool, then store it in a large pool for daily use.
