Trip to Semeru, Indonesia 🇮🇩
It was my second time to Semeru, Indonesia. When we visited Semeru, we wanted to slow down and enjoy the sights in a way that was suitable for everyone, including my mom. The region offers plenty of breathtaking spots that don’t require intense trekking, so this itinerary is perfect for older travelers who prefer a more relaxed pace while still experiencing the beauty of nature 🌏
We started with Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, but this time, we focused on the panoramic viewpoint rather than hiking 🥾 down to the base. The viewing platform offers a stunning perspective of the cascading waterfalls without any strenuous effort ✨ My mom loved the peaceful sound of rushing water and the opportunity to enjoy the beauty without a challenging hike 🙌
📍Tumpak Sewu Waterfall, Sidomulyo, Pronojiwo, Lumajang Regency, East Java, Indonesia
Then we headed to Ranu Pani, a charming village at the base of Mount Semeru ⛰️ We explored the tranquil surroundings of Ranu Pani Lake and took plenty of photos 📸 of the calm waters reflecting the surrounding hills. It’s an easy, flat walk, and the village 🏘️ has a relaxing vibe that my mom really enjoyed 😍
📍Ranu Pani Village, Senduro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java, Indonesia
We also took an early morning jeep ride to Penanjakan Viewpoint, one of the best spots to watch the sunrise over the Tengger Caldera and Mount Semeru ⛰️ Since no trekking was required, my mom could comfortably enjoy the magnificent view. The misty morning light and the sight of Mount Semeru in the distance made it a magical experience 👍
📍Penanjakan Viewpoint, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java, Indonesia
To add a little adventure, we explored the Bromo Savanna ⛰️and Whispering Sands. We hired a jeep to take us across the vast landscape, which felt like stepping into another world 🌏My mom appreciated the unique scenery without needing to walk long distances 🚶
📍 Bromo Savanna and Whispering Sands, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java, Indonesia
On our way back, we stopped at Madakaripura Waterfall. The short walk to the falls is mostly flat and shaded, and the scenery is incredible💯 We took it slow, and my mom enjoyed soaking her feet in the refreshing stream 💦
📍Madakaripura Waterfall, Sapih, Lumbang District, Probolinggo Regency, East Java, Indonesia
This second trip to Semeru gave us a chance to share its beauty in a way that was comfortable for everyone. Whether it’s soaking in the views or riding a jeep through breathtaking landscapes, I’d recommend this itinerary for families traveling with older members 🙌🙌🙌

My first time seeing a volcano!
My first time seeing a volcano! My destination is the "Volcano Capital" of Indonesia, recommended by both Lonely Planet and National Geographic.
🌋 Mount Semeru, known as the "Mount Fuji of Indonesia," is more highly regarded by locals than Mount Bromo. At 3,676 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak on Java Island. Unlike the desolate surroundings of Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru is surrounded by lush forests and villages.
[Itinerary]
Day 1: Arrival
✈️ International flight: Depart from China, usually with a layover in Southeast Asia, then arrive at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Indonesia.
🚗 Head to the trailhead: From Surabaya Airport, head to the trailhead of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. You can rent a car or take a bus, which takes about 4–5 hours.
🏨 Check in to a hotel: Choose a hotel or homestay near the park to rest and prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Day 2: Mount Semeru
🌅 Hiking time: 5–10 am.
✅ Mount Semeru: Go to the viewpoint. The volcano erupts every 15 minutes or so, and the view is clearer after sunrise. You can have a cup of coffee at Teras Semeru, overlooking the volcanic cone and smoke. It's very healing!
✅ Sewu Waterfall: A dozen waterfalls converge in one place. Stay for 30 minutes to 1 hour. It takes 1 hour to go down and back. It is recommended to wear water shoes and not thick clothes, as the waterfall mist will get you wet!
Day 3: Mount Bromo
📍 Mount Bromo: Usually depart at 2–3 am, take a jeep to the viewing platform, and welcome the first ray of sunshine in the morning. See the volcanic eruption up close. Ride a horse across the volcanic sand sea and climb more than 800 steps to feel the shock of nature. If you have enough time, you can camp near Mount Bromo for a night and enjoy the starry sky and magnificent sunrise.
👉 Tips: Don't go to the viewpoint too early. The temperature is low, so it is recommended to wear a jacket/down jacket and a mask to protect against volcanic ash. Sunrise is at 5–5:30 am. Go down the mountain at about 6 am. The jeep will take you back to the entrance of the volcano, and the guide will take you back to the hotel.
Day 4: Return
Return from Surabaya Airport. Allow plenty of time to get to the airport, as there is a high chance of traffic jams!
[Travel Tips]
⏰ Best time: Dry season (April–October), when the weather is dry and suitable for hiking.
🎒 Preparation: You need a local permit to climb the mountain. It is recommended to hire a guide and book accommodation and transportation in advance.
⚠️ Safety: Mount Semeru is active, so pay attention to local volcano warnings and follow safety guidelines.
📝 Equipment: Comfortable hiking shoes, warm clothes, sunglasses, sunscreen, enough water and food. The road to the waterfall and volcano is bad, so bring motion sickness and stomach medicine.
💚 Health: Be aware of altitude sickness when hiking at high altitudes. Stay hydrated and rested. Have a nice trip!
