Santuário de Fátima
On the mountain north of the Setúbal port stands a magnificent ancient castle, which is the famous Forte de São Filipe.
The castle was built in 1582 and was responsible for defending the mouth of the Sado River. In 1755, the Lisbon earthquake caused heavy damage to the ancient castle, and the remaining part has now been transformed into a five-star hotel. The castle is open for free visits, and the blue Lacer tile paintings in the small chapel inside the castle are well-preserved, making visitors feel as if they have traveled back to the Middle Ages. Standing on the city wall and looking out, the scenery of the Sado River entering the sea is breathtaking, and the slender Troia Peninsula (Costa de Galé) seems to guard the port of Setúbal like a long embankment. The magnificent scenery is unforgettable.
