🌈Highlights: Negombo, a small town by the sea, is the first stop for many tourists arriving in Sri Lanka due to its proximity to the airport. Many people first experience the unique charm of Lanka here. Since we arrived in Lanka in the morning, we directly transferred to Anuradhapura. After wandering around for ten days, we finally returned here. The geographical advantage has not changed the flavor of this small town. Watching the locals leisurely strolling on the streets, the town's calm and tranquility remain its main theme. Negombo is by the sea on one side, and the main road is lined with many unique restaurants. Most people play on the beach during the day, and the restaurants and bars become lively at night. ✅ Walking all the way to St. Sebastian's Church, this is a beautiful Gothic church. It is said to be the most beautiful church in Negombo, with the foundation ceremony presided over by the then Archbishop of Colombo, Peter Mackey. Although it is not as famous as St. Mary's Church in Negombo, the exquisite level of this building is slightly higher. The church is still well-preserved, with a large square around it. There are basically no tourists, only a few believers and locals sitting and chatting, making it very suitable for a leisurely walk or quiet meditation. ✅ Walking to the beach, besides the scenery, there is also a taste of life. The sand is not very fine, and there are not many tourists on the beach in the evening, mostly locals working or strolling. 🚗 Lanka Travel Route: Most people choose to stay in Negombo for a rest upon arrival in Lanka, and then start a circular tour. I arrived at around nine in the morning, so I planned to take a car directly to the farther Anuradhapura and then slowly play my way back. 🚌 Transportation: From the airport, you can take a tuk-tuk to the booked hotel. When leaving for the airport, you can arrange with the tuk-tuk driver in advance to pick you up. 🏠 Accommodation Information: Accommodation in Negombo is mainly concentrated along Beach Road, with many hotels and guesthouses. The place is not big, so you can find a place by walking along the main street or into the alleys, or you can book in advance online.

A Nightmarish Stay

Please do not choose this place if you are not comfortable with bugs. There were several large cockroaches in the room. The bathroom window lacked glass, allowing insects free entry. Surprisingly, there were no mosquitoes. When the hotel staff led us to our room, a large cockroach was on the wall. We are not fond of bugs, so we asked for the cockroach to be removed. However, the staff member said that the cockroach would go away on its own and did nothing. We found several more large cockroaches afterward, but we tolerated them, thinking that changing rooms would be the same. In hindsight, we should have looked for another hotel, but it was already past 11 p.m. The shower only had cold water, and the water pressure was very weak. The window next to the shower was just a grid without any glass, completely exposed. Moreover, the worst part was that the hotel's restaurant was hosting a birthday party. The DJ played music at an unbelievably loud volume. The hotel staff said the party would end at 11:30 p.m., but it continued well past midnight. We were fortunate not to have to eat at the restaurant since we had already eaten on the plane. There was no elevator, and the stairs and hallways to our room were pitch dark because the lights were off. We used the light from our iPhone to go down to the reception on the first floor to complain about the noise from the party. The bed linens were damp, and the pillows had stains that looked like cockroach feces. We were too scared to uncover the duvet thinking there might be cockroaches. We booked a room with a bathtub, but there was no bathtub in the room. The bath towels were dingy and tattered. It was truly a nightmarish experience. The only good things were that the air conditioning worked and there were outlets for overseas electrical appliances. If the room had been clean and free of insects, we could have enjoyed the view by opening the curtains.

Getting There - by plane, Negombo is closer from the airport than Colombo, has wonderful huge sandy beaches and it's easier to travel all around Sri Lanka with daily tours from Negombo Attractions - Negombo itself has nothing much interesting to see. I took a tuk-tuk driver in front of the hotel and asked him to drive me around and show what is interesting. we went to some bridge, saw how do they say fish on the beach, nothing much compared to hat Sri Lanka can offer you, but it's a good idea if you arrived in the morning or afternoon and don't have time to go somewhere far away, but stil don't want to lose a day. Hotels - to tell you the truth what I have booked at first, was not what I expected to get. when I have arrived at night my room wasn't ready, even we talked on whatsapp with them and I asked to be ready. there was no balcony ,but it supposed to be according to my booking. so next morning I just woke up and went to the seaside to have my wonderful breakfast facing the ocean and I found many hotels there. so my advice is to book something for 1 day and later find what you really like and can see with your eyes. Food & Restaurants - food there is simple, but yet delicious. the only problem everything or doesn't work because people there have more holidays than working days, but when they do you can find very nice dishes. Shopping -there is no shopping in Negombo. as I said most of the days are holidays. that was really strange. shops there are very tiny 1m×1m. you can buy only water there and some snacks. not many options.its not like in Thailand or Vietnam. be aware of shops that sell gems 💎, those gems are for tourist and mostly fake. if you are a girl and travel alone for your safety and comfort take a private driver.
