Journey Along the Beautiful Coastline: Hiking the Monterosso to Vernazza Trail
#hikingtrails #100waysoftravel #cinqueterre#beautiful_italy #italy #monterosso #vernazza #coastline #coastlineviews
One of the most beautiful hiking trails we’ve ever explored was the Monterosso to Vernazza route in Cinque Terre, which I tackled with my mum on a scorching summer day.
The trail is quite challenging, with steep, uneven steps that make the hike demanding, but the stunning coastline views and panoramic scenes of Monterosso and Vernazza are well worth the effort. The path winds along cliffs, offering breathtaking glimpses of the sparkling blue Mediterranean below. We took much longer than expected as we paused to admire the wild beauty of the landscape—vibrant red poppies, fluttering butterflies, and rows of lush vineyards lining the hillsides.
While there are occasional shaded groves, most of the trail is exposed, with the sun beating down on us as we hiked. By the time we finished, we were left with happy tan lines and unforgettable memories of the gorgeous scenery and peaceful solitude of the trail.
And that was the only time I hiked in a long skirt, which I ended up tying around my hip halfway through the trail because I hadn’t anticipated just how difficult the hike would be. It certainly added to the adventure and made for a fun, unexpected memory!
Gorgeous Italian Vistas
#100WaysOfTravel A picturesque coastal region in Italy, is a collection of five colorful villages perched on rugged cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea. Each village—Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore—offers its unique charm, from vibrant harbors to terraced vineyards. The area's dramatic landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and well-preserved architecture create an enchanting atmosphere perfect for hiking, relaxing by the sea, or savoring local cuisine. Whether wandering through narrow streets or enjoying breathtaking views, Cinque Terre captivates with its timeless beauty and serene ambiance.
Cinque Terre - 3 day itinerary 🇮🇹
#myitinerary
During my summer vacation, I spent three incredible days exploring the stunning Cinque Terre in Italy, and it was nothing short of magical! This UNESCO World Heritage site is a collection of five colorful, cliffside villages along the Italian Riviera—each one with its own unique charm.
**Day 1:** I started in **Monterosso al Mare**, the largest of the five villages. Here, I relaxed on the beach, which is one of the few sandy stretches in the area, and enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch with a view of the sea. Later, I took a leisurely walk through the town’s narrow streets, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Monterosso is also home to the beautiful Church of San Giovanni Battista, which is worth a visit.
**Day 2:** I hopped on the train to **Vernazza**, which quickly became my favorite village. The colorful houses, small harbor, and dramatic views made it feel like a postcard come to life. I explored the Doria Castle and climbed up to the Belforte Tower for breathtaking views of the coastline. In the evening, I enjoyed a simple but perfect dinner of pasta al pesto at a small, family-run trattoria.
**Day 3:** My last day was spent hiking between **Corniglia, Manarola,** and **Riomaggiore.** The trails offer stunning vistas of the Mediterranean and the terraced vineyards. Corniglia, perched on a cliff, offers some of the best views but requires a bit of a climb to reach. Manarola’s sunset views are unforgettable—this is the place to be for golden hour. Finally, I ended my day in Riomaggiore, enjoying a gelato by the marina and watching the fishing boats bobbing in the water.
There’s no entrance fee to visit the villages, but you’ll need a Cinque Terre Card (about €7.50/day) to access the hiking trails and use the local trains. Nearby, you can also visit the charming town of La Spezia, which is a great base for exploring the region.
If you’re looking for stunning scenery, delicious food, and a taste of authentic Italian culture, Cinque Terre is an absolute must. Just be prepared to fall in love with every village you visit!

Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre is a series of five coastal villages located in the Liguria region of Italy. The villages include Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Their spectacular natural beauty, colorful houses clinging to the cliffs, and amazing hiking trails make it one of the most popular destinations in Italy. To complete your experience, you can also explore the neighboring villages around Cinque Terre, visit the vineyards, and enjoy delicious local cuisine. It is the perfect place to enjoy the authentic charm of the Italian coastline.
Italy Cinque Terre a postcard coming to life
The most iconic colorful cliffside village in Italy is none other than the famous Clinque Terre. It is made up of the 5 villages . The stretch of the coastline is so beautiful even in winter. Unfortunately the weather has been rainy in winter hence it’s definitely a better season to go in summer! Perks of winter is that there is barely any tourists in town and you can explore the 5 villages without being over crowded! They also serve the best pesto pasta and sardine in clinque terra!
You may take a day tour out or take a train there yourself. Train runs up to 3 times in an hour and the journey from each village to the next only takes about 5 minutes! If you have time and the weather permits would recommend going for a hike over Monterosso to Vernazza for a great view of the village!
I could imagine the turquoise blue in sunny days! So be sure to check the weather and head over during sunny days !#2024wish #italy #clinqueterre #schoolholidays #hiddengems #december #holiday

Discover Monterosso, Le Cinque Terre
Stunning beauty!
Monterosso al Mare is the largest of the five coastal villages known as the Cinque Terre. It is characterized by typical narrow medieval streets, carruggi, with multi-coloured terraced houses.
The beach is the only sand beach in the Cinque Terre so you can't miss it!
What to see: the statue of San Benedetto d' Assisi, located on the "colle dei capuccini" on the old town side.
There is a wide range of hotels near the sea.
The easiest way to get there is by train, thanks to the local train Cinque Terre Express from La Spezia or Levanto.

I highly recommend visiting the outskirts of Florence, Italy.
Cinque Terre, located near Florence, is one of the most beautiful villages 🌅
Although it is a tourist destination, it is also a residential area where locals live, giving it a quiet and serene atmosphere that I really enjoyed 👍
Many people only visit Florence and Pisa, so there aren't many tourists here. This allows you to explore leisurely and truly experience the city!
The sunset view from Cinque Terre 🌆 is also amazing, so I highly recommend staying to watch the sunset! Since it might be difficult to find a suitable restaurant, I suggest bringing a packed meal.
Spectacular views of the World Heritage Site Cinque Terre🇮🇹
#0yentripNovember
I went to Cinque Terre.
From Florence, I took a 3-hour train ride to Riomaggiore Station and visited five villages.
The course was quite a mountainous route, but the spectacular views from the top of the mountain helped me to relax.
There were also many places to eat in the villages.
It seems that November was the off-season, so there weren't that many people.
I greeted everyone I passed along the course, which made me feel cheerful.
You can get to each village by train, so even those who aren't very confident walking should be able to get around.
Italian - Cinque Terre.
Cinque Terre is located on the eastern coast of Liguria and is a rugged coastline in the province of La Spezia, including five villages, from west to east: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Due to the special geographical location and cultural landscape of these villages, Cinque Terre has become one of the main tourist attractions on the coast of La Spezia. In 1997, at the proposal of the province of La Spezia, Cinque Terre and the Port of Venere, Palmaria Island, Tino Island, and Tinetto Island were listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. In 1999, the Cinque Terre National Park was officially established.
Cinque terre is magical 🥰
#travellerswonderland
Cinque Terre is one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever visited! Located along Italy’s rugged coastline, this collection of five colorful villages feels like a dream. I paid around €16 for a day pass to access the hiking trails and trains that connect the villages. Each one has its own charm—Vernazza, with its tiny harbor, and Manarola, known for stunning views, were my favorites! 🏞️🌊
Hiking between the villages offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean and terraced vineyards, but if you’re not in the mood for hiking, the train is super convenient. Don’t miss grabbing a gelato while exploring! Nearby, you can also take a boat tour to see the villages from the sea—highly recommended for sunset 🌅.

The dreamy Italian fishing village is hidden on the cliff by the coast.
🏡Cinque Terre, composed of five fishing villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. It is recommended to arrange a three-day tour.
[One]Riomaggiore: The most well-equipped of the five fishing villages, and the initiator of the Cinque Terre National Park. It has classic fishing village scenery and a castle to visit.
[Two]Manarola: Internet-famous village. Many postcard angles of Cinque Terre come from this fishing village. The cliff is full of colorful houses. It is recommended to come at sunset, otherwise you may be disappointed.
[Three]Corniglia: A village located halfway up the mountain (you need to take a bus to get there). Fewer tourists arrive, but you can enjoy the coastline from a high place.
[Four]Monterosso: The largest fishing village with more hotel and restaurant options. There is a beach stretching for hundreds of meters. After eating, you can take a walk along the coast. Attractions include The Giant Statue.
[Five]Vernazza: A fishing village full of history, a good place to watch the sunset. There are two small pebble beaches, and you can climb up to the Doria Castle to overlook this fishing village.
Cinque Terre, Italy, the most beautiful fishing village in the world.
Cinque Terre, located in the Liguria region of Italy, is a shining pearl on the Mediterranean coast. - Manarola: The "Love Road" (Via dell'Amore) here is a path connecting Manarola and Riomaggiore, which is very suitable for couples to stroll.
- Monterosso: This is the largest of the five villages and the only place with a real beach, suitable for sunbathing and swimming.
🚙【Transportation strategy】
- The most convenient way to reach Cinque Terre is to take a train from Pisa or Florence to La Spezia, and then transfer to a regional train to Cinque Terre. Train tickets can be purchased for a pass, which is convenient for visiting various villages.
- If you choose to drive by yourself, please note that due to the terrain, parking may be difficult and expensive. It is recommended to park the car in La Spezia and then transfer to public transportation.
🏘️【Accommodation recommendation】
- You can enjoy the beauty of Cinque Terre by staying in any village, but considering the flow of tourists, it is recommended to book in advance. Monterosso is popular because it has a beach; Vernazza is popular because of its beauty; if you want a quieter environment, you can consider staying in Corniglia.
- It is recommended to book a homestay or hotel with a sea view balcony, so you can enjoy a glass of local wine while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
❗【Surrounding food】
- Don't miss the seafood here! Freshly caught fish, octopus and mussels are good choices.
- Try local specialties-octopus with olive oil, lemon cocktail and Liguria's traditional pasta Trofie con Pesto di Genova.
- The local area also produces a sweet wine called Sciacchetra, which is made from local grapes. It is sweet but not greasy, and is very suitable as a dessert wine after a meal.
🌺【Nearby attractions recommended】
- After visiting Cinque Terre, you can go to nearby Portofino to experience a more high-end seaside style.
- The Leaning Tower of Pisa is not far away, and it takes about an hour to get there from La Spezia.

Have you watched the Pixar's film, Luca? If you haven’t seen the film, you’re missing out. In addition to a beautiful story, the views of the fictional town, Portorosso, are absolutely spectacular. Sure, it’s an animated movie, but it’s inspired by a real place, Cinque Terre.
Cinque Terre, the five towns, is a string of five ancient fishing villages composed of five beautiful hillside villages; Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. It perched high on the Italian Riviera just south of Genoa in northwest Italy.
The five villages are connected by hiking trails open all year round. The Cinque Terre Express trains are running every 20 minutes between the five villages. You can also enjoy this scenic coastline by taking the ferry and hop on and off where you like.
