The most cost-effective guide to visiting Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang is here!||
||. One of China's four major grottoes, the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, is located in the southern suburbs of Luoyang, Henan Province, China. It is situated on the cliffs of Longmen Mountain and Xiangshan Mountain on both sides of the Yi River. The grottoes here were mainly excavated over a period of more than 400 years from the Northern Wei to the Northern Song dynasties. To this day, there are still more than 2,100 niches (or wall niches) with over 100,000 Buddha statues and more than 3,600 inscriptions. Most of these are located on the west bank of the Yi River. The excavation of the Longmen Grottoes spanned multiple dynasties, beginning in the Northern Wei period under Emperor Xiaowen, flourishing in the Tang Dynasty, and concluding at the end of the Qing Dynasty. Currently, there are 2,345 existing niches and over 110,000 statues.
✅ About tickets 🎫: Day tickets and night tour tickets (both are 90 per person)
⚠️ PS: Recently, in summer, it is recommended to buy tickets for around 5 PM, so you can see both the daytime and nighttime illuminated scenery. Especially for those who come specifically to check in, you will definitely see more and not miss out!
⚠️ Differences between day and night tours:
❤️ During the day, you can see: Xishan Grottoes, Xiangshan Temple, Bai Garden (Bai Juyi's cemetery)
‼️ At night, you can see: Xishan Grottoes and Xiangji Temple, but you can see the illuminated effect of the grottoes from the opposite Lifo Terrace, which is truly stunning!
✅ Tour route: Northwest Service Area (this is the closest) → Enter the scenic area → Xishan Grottoes (this is where everyone takes photos and checks in online) → Cross the submerged bridge (note that the scenic area is a one-way tour, once you exit, you can't re-enter) → Lifo Terrace (wait for the lights to turn on, around 7:20 PM) → Take the electric car back to the Northwest Service Area (it's about 700 meters to the entrance)
⚠️ Notes: The Xishan area is where everyone will definitely stay the longest because many people want to take photos. Specifically, there are Binyang Cave, Wanfo Cave, Lianhua Cave, and Fengxian Temple. When taking photos, be sure to find multiple angles. Use a wide-angle lens for full-body shots, or use a value of around 3 for half-body shots near the railing!
❤️ The lights turn on around 7:20 PM. Wait a little longer until it's completely dark for a better viewing experience.
✅ Travel tips:
Shoes: Make sure they are comfortable, preferably sports shoes, as there is quite a bit of walking!
Clothes: Black, white, and red all look good in photos, or if you have time, you can dress up for the occasion.
Transportation: There are direct buses (10 yuan per person) from Luoyi Ancient City, White Horse Temple, Yingtian Gate, and Luoyang Longmen High-Speed Railway Station. After watching the lights at Lifo Terrace at night, be sure to buy electric car tickets quickly, as there are many people and you will need to queue. Around 8 PM, there are also buses (5 yuan per person) from the Northwest Service Area to downtown attractions.
❤️ No matter where you travel, always pay attention to safety! Go out happily and return home safely!

Springtime Bliss: Exploring China's National Flower Garden During the Peony Festival
#parksandgardens #100waysoftravel #luoyang #garden
In spring, a visit to China National Flower Garden for flower viewing is a must. We happened to visit during the Peony Festival, so we paid an entrance fee of 50 RMB.
The park is vast, so we spent an additional 15 RMB to take a one-way shuttle directly to the area where the peonies were in full bloom.
On the way back, we took our time strolling through the park, admiring the flowers, including peonies, cherry blossoms, crabapple, and some that we couldn’t identify.
We especially loved the bamboo grove and lake area, perfect for relaxing and unwinding.

Timeless Wonder: Experiencing the Sacred Splendor of Longmen Grottoes
#chinatrip #100waysoftravel #luoyang #grottoes
I’ve always wanted to see the Longmen Grottoes in person. Every time I watched documentaries about this ancient treasure, I felt a deep longing to witness it with my own eyes. The Longmen Grottoes, which began construction during the Northern Wei Dynasty, are a UNESCO World Heritage site, renowned for their countless stone-carved Buddhist statues and exquisite artistry. We were fortunate to experience both the daytime and illuminated nighttime views during the Longmen night tour, making this visit truly unforgettable. Though the numerous steps make it challenging for the elderly, the grandeur and awe of the grottoes made it all worthwhile.

Encountering the Most Beautiful Spring at White Horse Temple
If you visit Luoyang, White Horse Temple is a must-see!
White Horse Temple, founded in 68 AD during the Eastern Han Dynasty, is known as the "cradle of Chinese Buddhism." It holds immense historical significance as the first Buddhist temple established in China.
It's the only temple in the world that features Buddhist halls representing the architectural styles of China, Thailand, India, and Myanmar all in one place. This ancient temple seamlessly blends historical charm with exotic influences. We visited White Horse Temple during spring when the flowers were in full bloom, and we were fortunate to witness its breathtaking beauty at its peak.
Pro tips:
🚨To avoid crowds and tour groups, it's best to arrive at the temple as early as possible. We took a Didi and arrived at 8 AM. By 10 AM, the temple was already bustling with tour groups, so early arrival ensures a more peaceful experience.

Strolling through Luoyi Ancient City in Hanfu: A Journey Back to the Tang Dynasty!
We visited Luoyi Ancient City twice—both during the day and at night—just to fully appreciate its beauty.
During our visit, we had an amazing time hiring a photographer to capture photos of us dressed in Hanfu.
Strolling through the ancient streets felt like stepping back in time to the Tang Dynasty, as many visitors were also dressed in various styles of Hanfu, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. The ancient city provides official photographers (洛邑约拍)at very reasonable rates, making it easy to create beautiful memories.
🌹A helpful tip: while entry to Luoyi Ancient City is free, you need to scan a barcode displayed at the entrance to register. We tried to register, but as foreigners, we encountered some difficulties. However, the assistant at the entrance was incredibly friendly and understanding. Upon realizing we were visitors from abroad, he warmly welcomed us in without any issues. This act of kindness left us feeling touched by the warmth of the Chinese people.🥰

Luoyang · Laojun Mountain | Witness the Splendor of the World
"Travel far to attend the fleeting feast of the world, to witness the splendor of the world."
Laojun Mountain has an altitude of 2217 meters and is located in Luanchuan, Luoyang, Henan Province. A mountain climbing feast, more healing than I imagined. Although the altitude is high, the feeling of climbing up is really good. I am quite afraid of heights, but when I heard the height of more than two thousand meters and saw the cable car at Laojun Mountain, I felt much better. It is very stable! No fear for the future, I even dared to open my eyes and look!
🗺️ One-day tour guide:
⚠️ Be sure to join a group! It's very convenient! My boyfriend and I each paid 255 yuan
Round-trip tickets ➕ Laojun Mountain entrance ticket 🎫 ➕ First-level cable car round trip
1️⃣ Gather at Luoyang Station at 6:30 in the morning, the next stop is Yingtianmen to pick up the next group of people. It is recommended not to choose too early a gathering time, you can choose a closer one, it is really important to sleep more in the morning. I only woke up when we arrived at Laojun Mountain, I was so sleepy! Be sure to go to bed early the night before!!!
2️⃣ Arrive at Laojun Mountain at around 10 o'clock, the bus directly takes you to Zhongling Cable Car, which goes directly to Zhongtianmen (you need to queue, but it is very fast, eight people per cable car 🚡
3️⃣ We had lunch at Zhongtianmen because it takes a long time to climb from Zhongtianmen to Jinding. Replenishing your energy can ensure that you won't get tired while climbing. However, lazy people can take the second-level cable car and then take the straight elevator directly to Jinding.
4️⃣ From Zhongtianmen, climb about more than 500 steps in the morning to reach the Ten-mile Gallery. At this time, you have already walked one-third of the way! Be sure to persist ✊
5️⃣ There are rock climbing and glass plank roads in the middle of the Ten-mile Gallery. I was afraid of heights, so I just looked and didn't go!
6️⃣ Before reaching the Jinding Taoist Temple complex, you will first see the Daode Mansion. Behind the Daode Mansion is Jinding, and in front is Laojun Temple. Laojun Temple has two branches, one is Yuhuang Peak, dedicated to the Jade Emperor, where you can pray for official positions! Remember to fulfill your vow if it comes true. The other is Liangbao Platform, the treasure of Taishang Laojun, where you can pray for wealth.
7️⃣ You can write a wish card and hang it anywhere you want. Every place is full of red wish cards!
✅ Laojun Mountain is worth visiting once! I want to go a second time even more!

Recommendations for visiting the Zhu Ying in Chan Gorge
The Zhu Ying Tower, also known as 'Chan Gorge Zhu Ying', is located in Luoyang and is one of the eight small scenes of Luoyang. The Chan River flows through Mang Mountain, forming a deep gorge. Both sides of the river are planted with Zhu Ying cherry trees. When spring comes, all the trees revive. Looking from a distance, the red-faced cherry trees revealed in the green trees stretch for several miles, creating a very spectacular scene, hence the name 'Chan Gorge Zhu Ying'.
The fence around the Zhu Ying Tower is carved with exquisite cherry blossom patterns, and the inside is a dazzling peony flower. The two flowers are displayed side by side, giving people a sense of elegance and grace. Today, the area around the restored Zhu Ying Tower is also full of cherry trees. Every spring, it becomes a pink ocean, where visitors can appreciate the beautiful scenery of the Tang Dynasty.
The Zhu Ying Tower is suitable for shooting different styles of photography works such as Tang costumes, Tang Hanfu, princess costumes, new Chinese style, and Western Region style. In terms of shooting time, it is recommended to choose clear weather and the sunset time around 5 pm in winter. The light at this time is the softest and can better show the beauty of the Zhu Ying Tower.
As an open scenic spot, the Zhu Ying Tower does not have a closing time, and visitors can come to visit at any time. In addition, the Luoyang Ancient Porcelain Specimen Museum is also located here. The opening hours are 9:00-12:00 and 13:30-17:00 (closed on Mondays), and it is open as usual on statutory holidays. The address is at the intersection of Xunhe Road and Binhe North Road in the old city area.

Drum tower vs Bell tower in Luoyang
#tripblazers #luoyang #henan
In Luoyang old town, you can really get a sense of the ancient capital from the road that houses both the Impressive Drum tower, and the smaller Bell Tower. Most people take the time to visit the drum tower for its high walls and impressive views at night, but we loved also visiting the more modest but intricately decorated bell tower just a little way along the road. The view of the cobbled streets through its arch is beautiful and gives you a real sense of the history.

The Oldest Buddhist Temple in China
#tripblazers #henan #luoyang
As part of our history tour of Henan, we visited the oldest recorded Buddhist temple in China. The white horse temple has been at the epicentre of Chinese history since the year 68AD when it was established by Emperor Ming in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Here, Buddhism was first established in the country, with the temple being built to honour the two Indian monks and their white horses that brought the religion to China (hence the name). The gardens and buildings are beautiful, and if you are lucky enough to visit during April, you will see hundreds of blossoming Chinese peonies.

The international temples of Luoyang
#tripblazers #luoyang #henan
You might think that you’ve stepped into a hidden part of south east Asia when visiting the White Horse Temple, but actually what you are visiting is one half of a historic temple and park dedicated to worship (and photos) for hundreds of years! The India, Thailand and Myanmar temples were all built and donated on this site by their respective countries as part of a display of solidarity and friendship with the Chinese people. Today they are a great place to visit in the sunshine for peace and some beautiful photos.

An Afternoon at Longmen Grottoes
The Longmen Grottoes are located near Luoyang city in Henan Province, and are a must-visit attraction when in the area. There are tens of thousands of statues of the Buddha and his disciples here, carved right into the rock face and in the mutliple different caves that are dotted along the limestone cliff face.
There are said to be more than 2,000 caves and niches carved into the cliff, and the entire thing stretches over 1km. It's pretty impressive to visit and marvel at all the details.
If you want a great view of the long stretch of carvings from afar, hop to the other side of the Yi River - there is a viewing platform where you can see a great panoramic view of the grottoes.

Stunning Replicas in Luoyang
While not the real ancient architecture from years before, the Lijing Gate in Luoyang (Henan Province in China) still makes for a decent afternoon pitstop if you've already hit all the main sites and have some time to spare.
In just one or two hours, you can easily see everything you need to. Stroll along the old city streets, and take a peek at what all the vendors are selling - this can be everything from toys and souvenirs to traditional candy and other such delicacies.
We actually had one of the best bowls of noodles I've tried in a long time - they were super simple stir-fried noodles, but were expertfly flavored and only 8RMB for a HUGE bowl that was more than enough for two people to share for a lighter lunch option.
