Our family trip to Kotor was a magical blend of history, nature, and togetherness. We wandered through the narrow, cobblestone streets of the old town, marveling at the medieval architecture and charming squares. The kids were fascinated by the ancient walls and towers, while we enjoyed the stunning views of the Bay of Kotor. A highlight was our hike up to the fortress, where we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramas. We savored local delicacies at quaint cafes and bonded over shared adventures, making memories to cherish forever.
Next on our list is Japan. We're excited to explore its vibrant cities, serene temples, and picturesque landscapes. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the tranquil gardens of Kyoto, Japan offers a unique blend of tradition and modernity. The kids can't wait to see cherry blossoms, try authentic sushi, and maybe even spot a sumo wrestler. With its rich culture and family-friendly attractions, Japan promises to be an unforgettable destination for our next family adventure.
City within mountains. Mountains within city
Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. It is located on the Bay of Kotor, one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. Some have called it the southernmost fjord in Europe, but it is a ria, a submerged river canyon. Together with the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovćen, Kotor and its surrounding area form an impressive landscape.
The translation of Montenegro in Chinese is Black Mountain. Indeed the city was build around the bottom part of mountains in black colour.
There are a lot of small beaches alone the coast & usually have a resort, bar or restaurant next to the beach. It's an perfect place for tourist to spend their holiday in bathing under the sun. Dip into the pleasant temperature water.
Except the beaches there are a lots of places & historic sites are worth to visit.
St. Tryphon's Cathedral
St. Tryphon's Cathedral (Katedrala sv. Tripuna) is a popular place in Kotor. It is a Catholic Church built in 1166. Its interior design is simple but very nice! You can enjoy the old town walk from here and you can go for a hike nearby, the start point is from the church. I enjoy old town so much! There are lots of cats there, so cosy and chill! Most of the places accept credit card payment or Euros.

Kotor, another spot on the Balkans that many people want to visit. It is an old city with Venetian architecture nowadays part of the Republic of Montenegro. The place is also famous with the Bay of Kotor which is very beautiful especially during dawn and dusk. The best view of the bay probably could be seen from the town of Skajari, just 2km away from Kotor.

The Old Town of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a stunning place to visit!
🇲🇪 The Old Town of Kotor, nestled between the Adriatic Sea and the Orjen and Lovćen mountains, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town was built in the 7th century and was controlled by Venice and Austria from the 15th century until the present-day Republic of Montenegro. The town has perfectly preserved its medieval layout and Venetian and Austrian influences.
⛳ When you visit the Old Town of Kotor, you'll see blue skies, verdant mountains, red-tiled roofs, white-walled buildings, and winding city walls reflected in the azure sea, like a poetic landscape painting.
✨ Highlights:
1⃣️ The Old Town Gate was built in the 16th century. Enter through the main gate, the Sea Gate, and you'll see the coat of arms above the gate. It used to be the Venetian lion, then the Habsburg double-headed eagle, and now the coat of arms of the former Yugoslavia. The stone plaque with a five-pointed star and the number 1944 commemorates the day Tito's partisans defeated the Nazis and liberated Kotor.
2️⃣ The Old City Walls stretch 4.5 km to the top of the mountain and are majestic and spectacular. Climb the walls to see the buildings on the mountain and enjoy the beautiful views of the Old Town and the stunning Adriatic Sea and Kotor Fjord.
3⃣️ The Old Church, the beautiful twin-towered Catholic Cathedral of St. Tryphon, has been destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout history. Today, the two towers are different heights, one with a bell and the other without. The left tower is inscribed with the year 1166, when the church was built, and the right tower is inscribed with 2016, marking the church's 850th anniversary.
4⃣️ The Old Town Layout is a typical medieval town style, with buildings surrounding squares of various sizes. The buildings are mostly from the Venetian period, with some Byzantine architecture from the Roman era. It's a great place to take photos.
5⃣️ The Old Streets and Alleys are like a maze, narrow and winding, connecting the squares. Strolling through the alleys feels like traveling back to the Middle Ages. The squares are home to cafes, bars, and restaurants, making for a relaxing and enjoyable experience.
6⃣️ The town is located in a bay surrounded by mountains, making it a natural harbor and a must-see for large Mediterranean luxury cruise ships. The moat, formed by a tributary of the sea, is crystal clear and reflects colorful light in the sunlight.
7⃣️ The limestone cliffs of the Orjen and Lovćen mountains form the most spectacular scenery on the Adriatic Sea, a testament to the wonders of nature.
📍 Address: Southern Montenegro, southern end of Kotor Bay, Adriatic Sea
⏰ Opening hours: All day
💰 Admission: Free
🚗 Transportation: Take a bus from Podgorica to Kotor, ticket price €6.5, with a €1 service fee per ticket
Natural beauty in abundance- Europe’s hidden gem?
As an avid traveller I rarely feel the need to visit somewhere twice. This was my exception. At the start of the year I spend just a week in Montenegro and felt myself longing to see more.
After doing further research, I planned a month long trip for October /November.
I was expectant that the weather would be a bit of a miss, but have had nothing but sunshine.
Must do when in Montenegro:
Visit Lake Skadar- we had the privilege of staying in a remote cabin on the lakeside which was a real highlight of the trip. A boat trip here is a must. The birds and nature is stunning.
Kotor cable car: on a clear day the cable car offers fantastic views over the Kotor Bay and the wider area. It is accessible and sustainable tourism which protects the beautiful area.
Fortress walk Kotor: steep climb but greatly rewarding views.
Our Lady of the Rocks & Blue Caves boat trip - 3 hour boat trip from Kotor.
Explore Kotor Old Town.
Sveti Stefan is breathtaking and just a 15 minute bus trip from Budva.

My visit to Kotor was a fascinating experience full of history and natural beauty. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is characterized by narrow streets and historic buildings.
I enjoyed walking around the harbor with a view of the mountains surrounding the city. Climbing the castle was a fun challenge, but the view from the top was worth it.
The dining experience was delicious, with local cuisine including fresh fish and traditional dishes. The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and friendly.
I would recommend everyone to visit Kotor and explore its natural beauty and rich history. It is an unforgettable destination! 🌊🏰
Lonely Planet's Top 10 Must-Visit Cities.
Kotor is a medieval town located on the east coast of the Bay of Kotor in southwestern Montenegro. In 2016, Lonely Planet listed it as one of the top 10 must-visit cities. As the old town is well-preserved, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
To get to the old town, you must first pass the moat. The ancient city wall surrounding the old town of Kotor was built from the 9th to the 18th century. The solid city wall and the clear green moat form a beautiful picture.

Travel Diary of Kotor, Montenegro: High Value Local Water Tours, Unique History and Attractions!
This time, I visited the town of Kotor in Montenegro and joined a local water tour to explore unique attractions! These include the Former Submarine Tunnel, Mamula Island, the Blue Cave, and more! These attractions are very unique and require a boat to visit.
The Former Submarine Tunnel is an underwater tunnel used to hide submarines during the Second World War. It's very interesting and unique!
The second attraction is Mamula Island, which was a prison during the Second World War and has now been transformed into a luxurious hotel. A night at this hotel costs up to HKD 5000. If you're not a guest, you can't go onto the island, but it's still worth visiting nearby!
The third attraction is the Blue Cave, which has incredibly blue water. The sunlight reflecting inside the cave creates a unique color!
The entire water tour was booked through Get Your Guide in Europe. It's very convenient and fast! The price is 27 euros, about HKD 240.
I flew to Kotor by booking a flight to Podgorica Airport, the capital of Montenegro, through Trip.com. Departing from the UK, you can also enjoy airport lounges. As a diamond member, you can enjoy two free lounge services! Download it now!

Kotor, Montenegro, is an absolute gem! Nestled between towering mountains and the sparkling Adriatic Sea, this ancient city stole my heart during my summer vacation. 🏰🌊 The moment you step into Kotor's Old Town, you're transported back in time with its narrow cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and charming squares. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the 3€ entrance fee to climb the city walls is totally worth it. The views from the top are breathtaking—you get a panoramic view of the entire bay and the red-roofed city below. ⛰️
After exploring the Old Town, I wandered through local shops, enjoyed a coffee in a quaint café, and visited the St. Tryphon Cathedral, one of Kotor's many historical treasures. The whole area is steeped in history and offers a great mix of cultural and natural beauty. Whether you're into history, photography, or just love exploring new places, Kotor has something for everyone. #trip #KotorMagic #MedievalCharm #Montenegro #OldTownWanderings #StunningViews

A Jewel on the coast of montenegro
#myhiddengems
Compared to my previous holiday in Kotor more than a decade ago. The tourist numbers have really gone up. But that can be said about most of montenegro in the last couple of years. Having said so, Kotor was still the stunning little town with gorgeous views that I can recollect.
It has a rich culture and heritage. The town has been part of the scene since the middle ages. This 2000 year old town is also unesco heritage. The Bay of Kotor is rich in hidden beaches, while some of the most beautiful ones are even walking distance from the old town. Famous beaches are: Bajova Kula, Orahovac, Risan, Perast and the main beach of Kotor, which starts from the center of Kotor.
A day trip to the village of Njeguši, ancient Cetinje, together with Lovćen and Skadar National Park is an ideal way to enhance your overall understanding of Montenegro history. The ideal The ideal day trip from Kotor is one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, called Mostar. #myhiddengems #100waysoftravel #beachlife #cherryblossom2024 #montenegroseaside #europe #nature
Timeless Kotor, Montenegro
Living almost a decade in Europe means i had chance to visit not only mainstream places but also some gems in a random country
This time I visited Montenegro - one of the young nation in the Balkans.
Kotor - the pretty town stole my heart. Nested in the gateway to the sea, very well known with lovely cobblestone streets and the fjord-like scenery
I spent over 2 days here just to explore the surrounding. Montenegro is still under the shadow of Dubvronik in Croatia so expect less crowds
Such a wonder getaway that I still keep telling my friends Kotor is my favorite town in Europe
