The Taushubetsu River Bridge!!
The Taushubetsu River Bridge (Taushubetsu-gawa Kyouryou) is a concrete arch bridge of the former National Railway Shihoro Line located in Kamishihoro Town, Hokkaido. Currently, it is submerged in Lake Nukabira, a dam lake, and is called the 'phantom bridge' because it appears depending on the season and the water level of the lake.
Main Features
Construction Year: 1937 (Showa 12)
Structure: Concrete arch bridge
Length: Approximately 130 meters
Usage: It was once used as a railway bridge for the Shihoro Line, but the line was closed in 1987.
Highlights
Winter: The bridge is often fully visible as the lake surface freezes.
Summer: When the water level of the lake rises, only the arch part may be visible as some parts are submerged.
Autumn when the water level drops: The entire bridge often appears clearly.
Preservation Efforts
The Taushubetsu River Bridge is weathering in the natural environment and may completely collapse in the future. Therefore, efforts for preservation and recording are being promoted by local organizations and tourism associations.
When visiting, it is important to enjoy while respecting the surrounding natural environment.
Checked in the underwater railway from Spirited Away on a self-drive tour in Hokkaido
Driving in Hokkaido during the Golden Week holidays🚗
This time, the destination is Eastern Hokkaido, which is rich in natural scenery~
The weather in Hokkaido is still quite cold. I left Tokyo in a light outfit, and quickly wrapped myself in a sweater coat after getting off the plane
The cherry blossoms here have just started to bloom, and there is still some snow in the mountains that has not melted, just like the scenery in early February in Tokyo.
Driving from Chitose towards Tokachi, we checked in at the Tokachi Ranch full of dairy cows🐄 and visited the filming location of the underwater railway tracks from 'Spirited Away' at Lake Shikaribetsu🛤️ and stayed there for one night.
Lake Shikaribetsu is the only natural lake in Daisetsuzan National Park
At an altitude of 810 meters, it is the highest lake in Hokkaido, with the deepest part of the lake bed reaching 100 meters.🌊
The lake is surrounded by primeval forests, and driving around the lake, you can see many white birch trees and various road signs that you don't see in Tokyo. It is said that the forest is home to the 'Pika', an endangered small animal that looks like a rabbit🐰 but has the stature and demeanor of a mouse🐭 and has been around since the Ice Age.
The room I stayed in faced Lake Shikaribetsu (picture 12) and the mountain outside the window reflected on the lake surface, forming the shape of a big mouth👄. After looking it up, I found out that this reflection is also known as 'Lip Mountain', which is quite interesting!
I've been driving around Hokkaido these days, enjoying nature, and will continue to update! If you're interested, come and check it out, hehe!
