Symphony of Stones in Garni Gorge, Armenia: A Favorite for Hikers and Photographers!
Symphony of Stones is a natural monument located in the Garni Gorge of the Azat River in Armenia. It is one of Armenia's most famous natural landmarks, featuring massive, symmetrical basalt columns that rise up to 50 meters, creating a striking organ pipe-like appearance.
These basalt columns were formed by the slow cooling and contraction of volcanic lava, showcasing nature's ability to create astonishing structures. The Garni Gorge, with its steep cliffs and beautiful scenery, adds an elegant charm to the Symphony of Stones, making it a favorite among hikers and photographers. It's definitely worth a visit. Open all day and no entrance fee required.
Address: 4P8R+8HM, Garni 2215, Armenia
It is recommended to rent a car or hire a car to get there from downtown Yerevan.
This country is visa-free! Armenia's fifth stop: Garni Temple.
📍Attraction address: Garni Temple
Located about 20 kilometers from the Armenian capital of Yerevan, it is on the edge of a triangular cliff, overlooking the Azat River Valley and Geghama Mountains, and is part of the Garni Fortress.
🚗Attraction transportation:
It is very convenient to take a taxi or charter a car. For those who are not familiar with the local road conditions or do not want to have no car on the return journey, chartering a car is a good choice.
If you take public transportation, you can go to the Yerevan Bus Station from Yerevan, and then take public transportation to the direction of Garni Village. There are fewer buses.
❤Recommended reason:
Garni Temple is the only Greek Roman-style column building in Armenia and the only such building in the former Soviet Union. It was built in imitation of the Parthenon in Athens. The top is supported by 24 columns and is built with blue and black basalt. The style is elegant. The temple has a long history. According to some scholars, it may have been built by the Armenian king Tiridates I in the 1st century AD. It has witnessed the historical changes in Armenia. It is a landmark building in Armenia before the Christian era and a symbol of ancient Armenian religion and culture. The location of the temple has a wide view and the surrounding natural landscape is beautiful. Standing at the temple, you can enjoy the magnificent canyon scenery and mountain scenery. There are also other historical sites such as Roman bath ruins and churches next to the temple, which can be visited together.
👍️Must-visit attractions:
[One] Main building of the temple: unique architectural style and exquisite column carvings, the charm of ancient Greek architectural style.
[Two] Roman bath ruins: In the southwest corner of the temple, there are partially preserved mosaic floors and Greek inscriptions. The heating system and other facilities in the bath are also well preserved, which can understand the ancient architectural technology and lifestyle.
[Three] Distant mountain viewing platform: The viewing platform next to the temple overlooks the Garni Canyon. The rock structure here is special and is called the "Stone Symphony". It is definitely an amazing geological wonder.
🎟️Ticket related: The ticket price is 1,500 drams. You can try to bring your country's student ID. The student ticket is 500 drams.
💗Other tips: After Armenia converted to Christianity in the early 4th century AD, the Garni Temple was converted into the summer royal residence of Tiridates III's sister Khosrovdukht. Some people also think that it may not have been a temple but a tomb, so it survived in the wave of Christianity destroying pagan buildings. The Garni Temple has been destroyed many times in history. It was looted by the Timurids in 1386 and collapsed in an earthquake in 1679. Most of the original main buildings and bricks still stood at the original site until the 20th century, and were later rebuilt from 1965 to 1975.
