When Han Jian built a new city in the late Tang Dynasty, it was left as the South Gate and renamed Yongning Gate in the Ming Dynasty. The arrow tower of Yongning Gate was destroyed during the Xi'an Defense War (also known as the Two Tigers Defending Chang'an) and was rebuilt on the original site in 2013.
