Wat May Souvannapoumaram

#November Destinations 2025 Wat May Souvannapoumaram, also known as "Wat May New Temple," was built in 1924 and is one of the largest and most magnificent temples in the city. The main hall is resplendent in gold, with a red and gold roof guarded by seven golden dragons. The portico is exquisitely carved, depicting scenes from the Ramakien epic. The interior walls are covered with brightly colored murals depicting the life of Buddha, and a huge golden seated Buddha is enshrined in the center, creating a grand and imposing atmosphere. The temple also houses a rare boat-shaped shrine that stores traditional Lao dragon boats. Hundreds of monks often chant prayers here in the early morning, creating a spectacular alms-begging procession. Located next to the Royal Palace, a 3-minute walk away, it is an excellent place to experience the life of Luang Prabang monks and Lao Buddhist art.
