Luang Prabang Royal Palace

#NovemberDestinations2025 The Luang Prabang Royal Palace, built in 1904, was the official residence of Sisavang Vatthana, the last king of Laos. It blends French classicism with traditional Lao architecture, with a multi-tiered golden canopy on the roof symbolizing royal power. Completed in 1925, it served as the political and religious center of the Lan Xang Kingdom. After the communist revolution in 1975, the palace was converted into the National Museum (Haw Kham), and the royal family was sent to a labor camp and their whereabouts became unknown. Today, visitors can see the King's reception hall, the royal bedchamber, the mosaic murals collected by the Queen, and the most sacred national treasure: the gilded standing Phra Bang Buddha, a 16th-century bronze statue said to be the origin of the name "Luang Prabang." Photography is strictly prohibited inside the museum; shoes must be removed and bags checked. Gifts given by the King to various countries, traditional Lao musical instruments, a moon rock (a gift from the United States), and exquisite murals are all highlights. The museum boasts an unparalleled location, nestled between the Mekong River and facing Mount Phusi. Open daily from 8:00-11:30 and 13:30-16:00, with an entrance fee of 50,000 Lao kip, it is a must-visit destination for understanding the history and culture of the Lao royal family.
