Explore the beauty of Dingwuling, a "mosquito-free village" with its ancient and simple villages.
This Spring Festival, I discovered a particularly amazing ancient town. It is very simple, without a strong commercial atmosphere, and retains its original architectural style - built of stone and mud. It is different from the many ancient towns I have visited, and it is indeed refreshing.
Recommended route:
If you are traveling from Shantou like me, you can refer to my route: Depart from Shantou, pass by Shiyan Scenic Area (free, the temple is built in a stone that looks like a lion's mouth) - Dingwuling - Changting Ancient City (overnight) - Guanzhai Mountain + Shimen Lake
Dingwuling has a parking lot. After parking, walk up the stairs for about ten minutes, no need to take the battery car (5 yuan per person). The road is not difficult to walk, and the scenery is very good.
Longyan B&B | Visit Changting and stay at Here San She.
| Visit Changting and stay at Here San She. Changting San She Life B&B | Live in poetry and fireworks 🎇
B&B location 📍
Located at No. 61, Huanbei Road, Changting County, it is very close to Changting Ancient City, only about 1–2 km away. You can easily reach the ancient city on foot or by riding a small electric scooter. You can enjoy the hustle and bustle of the ancient city and the tranquility of the B&B.
B&B environment 🏡
The B&B is a single white building surrounded by trees. The exterior is a pure white wall with a round archway door, full of Mediterranean and Greek style, and is super photogenic. The interior is decorated in an ins-style pure white and vintage American furniture style. The public area is decorated in pure white and wood color, which is warm and elegant. There is also a sunroom with great lighting, which is perfect for taking photos.
Room facilities 🛏
The rooms are spacious and bright, with high-quality bedding, which is very comfortable to sleep in. Some rooms even have their own small courtyard. The room names are also very poetic, such as Cong Rong and Bai Xue Ji. However, please note that some rooms have small bathroom countertops, which may not be suitable for storing a lot of cosmetics.
B&B service 💁♂️
24-hour front desk butler service, with enthusiastic and thoughtful service, will help solve various problems, and introduce local food and travel guides.
Activities 🎈
The B&B will give away a joint ticket for the four major scenic spots in Changting City, such as Baxiguan and Jichuanmen, where you can check in and experience the historical and cultural heritage of Changting. There are also many places worth visiting nearby, such as Taiping Bridge and Shuidong Street.
Food recommendations 🍜
The B&B's restaurant offers specialties such as Hetian chicken and tofu, which are delicious. In addition, there are many other Hakka delicacies in Changting, such as pickled pig kidney, taro dumplings, and city wall fried potato cakes, which you must not miss.
Cost performance 💰
The price is affordable, about CNY 100–300 per person. It may fluctuate during the peak tourist season or holidays, but overall, it is very cost-effective.
Fujian's Ancient City of Changting | A Shining Pearl of the Ages.
| A Shining Pearl of the Ages. Changting, formerly known as Tingzhou, is located in the upper reaches of the Ting River in western Fujian. It is one of the third batch of Chinese historical and cultural cities announced by the State Council. In the Jin Dynasty, Xinluo County was established in Changting. From the Tang Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty, it was the seat of the prefecture, road, and government. It was also one of the main settlements and birthplaces of the Hakka people, known as the "Hakka Base Camp" and "Hakka Capital." In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was called Tingzhou Prefecture, and Changting, Liancheng, Ninghua, Qingliu, Guihua, Shanghang, Wuping, and Yongding counties belonged to it. For those of us who were born and raised in Ninghua, Tingzhou is actually our hometown.
The New Zealand writer Rewi Alley, known as one of "China's Top Ten International Friends," once said: "There are two most beautiful mountain cities in China, one is Changting in Fujian, and the other is Fenghuang in Hunan." So this sentence is often used as an introduction to Changting. In fact, when Rewi Alley said this in the 1920s and 1930s, his feelings may have been genuine.
After all, Changting is a historical and cultural city with a long history, and there are many ancient buildings in the county that are covered in the dust of history. The most eye-catching and famous is, of course, the ancient city wall of Tingzhou on the banks of the Ting River. When we entered Changting County, it was just after the lights came on. We climbed the city wall and strolled along it, with the lights and shadows on both sides of the river clearly visible, and the sound of music and dance in our ears. There was also a bright moon shining on the past and present, and we didn't know what day it was!

Longyan Changting Travel Guide:
1. Recommended Attractions
Changting Ancient City: A national historical and cultural city, praised by international friend Rewi Alley as "one of China's two most beautiful mountain cities." Recommended itinerary: Baxi Hall → Dafu Di → Tianhou Palace → Shuidong Street → Jichuan Gate → Ancient City Wall → Sanyuan Pavilion → Wolong Academy.
Wolong Academy: Built during the Southern Song Dynasty, it is the oldest academy in Tingzhou Ancient City. The garden is exquisite and elegant, and the night lights create a dreamlike atmosphere.
Changting Ancient City Wall: With a unique shape, it is known as "Blue Clothes Hanging Beads" by locals. Over 3,000 meters remain, well-preserved.
2. Recommended Food
Hetian Chicken: Tender and delicious, a local specialty of Changting.
Stuffed Tofu: Tofu is cut into blocks, hollowed out, filled with stuffing, and then fried and cooked. It has a unique taste.
3. Accommodation Suggestions
Changting Lavande Hotel: Elegant environment, rich breakfast, close to the city center.
Sanyuan Qishe Homestay: Located in Sanyuan Pavilion, Tingzhou Ancient City, with attentive service and complete surrounding facilities.
It's no wonder it's called Little Shanghai~ It's so beautiful.
It's no wonder it's called Little Shanghai~ It's so beautiful. The Jichuan Gate of Tingzhou Ancient City is actually the East Gate of the ancient city. It was built in 1066 and faces the Shuidong Bridge across the Ting River. During the Republic of China, the upper wooden floor was demolished, leaving only the wall base. The upper wooden structure you see now was built in 2017. You can't believe this is in a modern city, it's like going back to ancient times in a movie.
During the Song Dynasty, Wen Tianxiang resisted the Yuan Dynasty at Jichuan Gate, and during the Ming Dynasty, Wang Yangming entered Tingzhou to suppress bandits. Jichuan Gate has witnessed the rise and fall of the ancient city for a thousand years. It can be called an ancient city that never gets old.
Attraction address: Shuizheng Road, Shuidong Bridge, Tingzhou Town, Changting County, Longyan City, Fujian Province
Attraction transportation: Take Tingzhou Bus No. 3 or No. 8 to Changting County Government Station, walk east for about 300 meters, and you must take photos and check in at the attractions:
[Gate appearance] The entire city gate is 35 meters long, 20 meters wide, and 21.87 meters high, covering an area of 1,538 square meters. It has three floors and is the largest city gate in Changting Ancient City.
[Tour the building] You can appreciate the woodwork of ancient buildings and overlook the cityscape. This place is suitable for aerial photography.
What you see now is already very beautiful. At night, when the lights are on and the fireworks are in full bloom, your eyes will be busy. This visual feast will make you full.
Changting·Dingwuling | A hundred-year-old Hakka ancient village hidden in the mountains and forests.
Immersed in this colorful society, suddenly seeing a simple and innocent smile, it really hit me hard!
Dingwuling, Gucheng Town, Changting County, it's autumn, and there is a cool wind in the mountains. Step by step up the stairs, you can overlook, you can take a deep breath to nourish your mind, and the surroundings are quiet. The occasional bird calls only add a bit of tranquility; it is said that there are no mosquitoes in the mountains in summer, which is really a good place to escape the heat and cool off.
There is a courtyard with a full sense of design on the top of the mountain, and there are many calligraphy and paintings in it, as well as a coffee shop and a bookstore, where you can take a break.
There are bamboos everywhere in the mountains, sprouting from unexpected places, the center of the tree stump or breaking through the roof, it is fun.
At the foot of the mountain is a campsite called "Sunset Camp", with many tents, facing the layers of mountains in the distance, imagining, if the sun comes out or goes down from somewhere, it penetrates the thin mist between the mountains and sprinkles light, what a beautiful picture it should be.
Dingwuling is an original ancient village far from the "world" and close to the "city". It has a history of more than 800 years and is known as the "living fossil of the original life of Hakka mountain people". Yellow mud walls, black and gray tiles, wooden houses, and stone steps can be seen everywhere. The rough and heavy stone village gate, the naturally unique old stone slab, the open old ancestral hall, and the old well in the Qianlong period have accumulated hundreds of years of history and culture in Dingwuling.
Longyan ~ Changting Ancient City ~.
First of all, I don't recommend traveling during holidays, there are too many people.
The first step after arriving in Changting is to buy a cup of local tea: Cha Shan Pai (it looks like a Xiamen brand at first glance, but it doesn't matter, it's still a Fujian brand and the taste is not bad. I recommend the light milk tea series).
I highly recommend a night tour of Changting City. The lights are on at night, and the scenery is really beautiful! It can be compared to Fenghuang Ancient City!
For dinner, we chose to eat in the ancient city. The main local specialty of Changting is taro dumplings (the skin is made of taro, which is chewy and has a meat filling. Overall, it's not bad. A large bowl seems to be only 20 yuan), hand-peeled bamboo shoots (sweet and sour, tender bamboo shoots), Hetian chicken (very flavorful, skin is very elastic and chewy).
The second day's itinerary is to go to Quaoli Wharf. The scenery is very good, there are not many people, and it is very suitable for slowing down and enjoying the slow life. You can take a boat ride for 20 yuan per person, which is very worthwhile!
Hometown of the Red Army, Little Red Shanghai! The ancient streets and alleys are full of poetic charm
❤Recommended Reason:

Low-key yet stirring -- the ancient city of Changting, Fujian
Changting, historically known as Tingzhou, was established as a county during the Han Dynasty. Since the 24th year of the Kaiyuan era in the Tang Dynasty, it became one of the five major prefectures in Fujian, one of the seven Min regions, and one of the eight Min prefectures. Since the prosperous Tang Dynasty, Changting has always been the administrative center of the prefecture, county, road, and prefecture, and is the scientific and educational cultural center of the "Hakka Culture (Western Fujian) Ecological Protection Experimental Zone." Changting, also known as Tingzhou Prefecture, is the first prefectural city where Hakka people gathered and is known as the "World Hakka Capital." It is also one of the third batch of national historical and cultural cities approved by the State Council, enjoying titles such as "Fujian Gourmet City," "Hometown of the Red Army," and "Little Red Shanghai." The ancient city of Changting, a city forgotten by time.
Walking into the ancient city of Changting feels like traveling back to that war-torn era. It was once the economic and cultural center of the Central Soviet Area, one of the starting points of the Red Army's Long March, and the political, military, economic, and cultural center of western Fujian.
Strolling through the ancient streets and alleys, with bluestone roads, red brick ancient houses, wooden doors, and carved windows, every stone, every window, and every building tells a story of history. Every corner here is full of stories, every place is worth savoring. Here, every step is a story, and every frame is a literary masterpiece.
There is also a rich food culture here. You can taste authentic Hakka cuisine, and every snack can satisfy your taste buds, allowing you to experience a feast of traditional Hakka food.
The ancient city of Changting, a place full of historical charm, awaits your exploration. Changting integrates human and natural landscapes and is known as "China's most beautiful mountain city."
Tingzhou Ancient City has the nation's first Hakka woodworking skills transmission institute
When visiting Tingzhou Ancient City, after passing through Chaotian Gate from East Street, the first thing you will see is the 'Hakka Woodworking Skills Transmission Institute,' which is converted from an old building. The facade is relatively simple, covering only 758 square meters, but it is the nation's first Hakka traditional architectural skills transmission institute.
📍Scenic Address: No. 73 East Street, Changting County, Longyan City, Fujian Province (inside Chaotian Gate)
🚗Scenic Transportation: You can take Tingzhou Bus No. 3 to Jichuan Gate, then walk north along Tingjiang for about 5 minutes to reach.
👍️Must-visit attractions:
1⃣ A plaque reading 'Ancestor of Rope and Ink Art' hangs high in the hall, and below it sits a statue that should be Lu Ban, but there is no introduction on-site.
2⃣ The Hakka walled house model takes the Hakka courtyard with 9 halls and 18 wells as an example. The eaves, window decorations, and wall ornaments are finely crafted, and you can also intuitively understand the layout of the Hakka walled house.
3⃣ The 'Wonderful Tools Produce Wonderful Products' theme showcases traditional woodworking tools. With the advent of modern industrial production, these tools may only be seen in museums.
4⃣ The workshop scene introduces the traditional woodworking work environment through different craftsman models.
5⃣ The interactive finished product area is where visitors can engage in woodworking activities. However, we visited at noon and only saw the handmade products of other visitors.
🎟️Ticket Information: It is currently publicly announced that during the trial operation period, the ticket price is 10 yuan per person. I bought the Tingzhou Ancient Charm five-site joint ticket online for 95 yuan per person (including Baxilou, Daifudi, Wolong Academy, Jichuan Gate, and the Woodworking Skills Transmission Institute).
💗Other tips: The exhibition hall is not large and is near Baxilou and Daifudi. It is recommended to visit all three halls on the same day to save a lot of walking.
Night Tour of Tingzhou City
Changting, historically known as Tingzhou, is famous for its majestic city towers, ancient city walls filled with historical charm, and winding streets and alleys. When night falls and the lights first bloom, Tingzhou exudes an enchanting atmosphere of earthly fireworks. This thousand-year-old ancient city, though not widely known, is rich in heritage, blending the strong Hakka culture with the red revolutionary history. Here, the hustle and bustle of the metropolis is absent, replaced by the warmth and liveliness of everyday life. Strolling through the city, the slow-paced life makes one feel exceptionally pleasant and beautiful.
Transportation: The ancient city is not large, and the attractions are close to each other. Visitors can easily choose to explore on foot or rent an electric bike for a leisurely tour.
Boat Experience: The ticket price is 76 yuan per person. At dusk, depart from the Huijimen Wharf for a journey of about 30 minutes. On the boat, you will be immersed in the splendid night view of both sides of the Ting River, including wonderful light performances, fully experiencing the unique historical charm of the ancient city. It is recommended to board the boat around six o'clock in the evening when the lights first come on. At this time, the night view of the ancient city is the most charming and will surely captivate you.

☆☆☆☆About accommodation
Stayed at Wushe Design Homestay
This homestay is very close to Baxi, with lots of food around, great location, the rooms are in an ins style, really upscale, with a great design sense, we stayed in a two-bedroom suite.
☆☆☆☆My feelings
1. Changting is really small, the attractions are very close
2. It's really not expensive, an average of 300 per person is enough to eat well
3. Changting bus stations are still in the style of eaves, very quaint
4. Parking spaces in Changting are super scarce, it's recommended to park further away, then rent a bike, shared electric scooters are hard to find, and if parked they might be taken away, and you can't just park anywhere. This time I rented from Anyuan Electric Vehicle Rental.
Changting Ancient City | The most comprehensive two-day and one-night travel guide is here
Changting County, formerly known as "Tingzhou", belongs to Fujian Province, is the location of the Central Soviet Area Tingzhou City, and the place where the red flag leaped over the Ting River. It is located in the western part of Fujian Province, at the southern foot of the Wuyi Mountains, bordering Guangdong to the south and Jiangxi to the west, with a land area of 3104.16 square kilometers; it has been a key point on the border of Fujian, Guangdong, and Jiangxi provinces since ancient times, and is known as the "west gate of Fujian Province". The county town of Changting is composed of Tingzhou Town and Datong Town. The entire county town is the place where we have lived since childhood, and there is no distinction between the ancient and new towns. The city gates are open and do not require tickets, only a few attractions require tickets. Changting city is very small, and it takes only about twenty minutes to drive around.
🚄🚙How to get there
🔴Take a high-speed train to "Changting South Station", and after exiting the station, you can take a taxi or take bus lines 3 or 5 from the parking lot to the city area, which takes about 15 minutes to reach the county town. (Changting does not have taxis, usually, it's Didi)
🔴If you are driving, just drive directly to the city area, find a place to park, and the attractions are within walking distance.
🔴There are a lot of shared electric scooters in the city area, in addition to taking a taxi, you can also choose an electric scooter.
🏢Accommodation recommendation
It is recommended to stay in a better hotel, as room prices soar during holidays and are in short supply, so it is necessary to book in advance. If you have time on the weekend, it is still recommended to take a two-day weekend trip, as even the locals find the holiday prices exaggerated. If you stay in a hotel in the city area, a taxi will generally cost less than 10 yuan.

With 72 staircases in the building, one for each household, it's remarkably logical and astonishing. The TV series 'Going South to Nanyang' was filmed here.
The fewer tourists and original atmosphere allow for a better experience of the landscapes and earthen building charm of western Fujian.
Visit Yongfu! See the cherry blossoms🌸 and tea gardens!
The biggest feature is the more than 50,000 acres of tea gardens, with over 150,000 cherry trees planted along the roads of the tea fields, creating a unique charm of tea field cherry blossoms. The unique combination of cherry blossoms and tea gardens has led to a photo of the cherry blossom garden being featured on the cover of 'China National Geographic' magazine.
Visit Changting! See the ancient town!
📍Changting Ancient Town
Located at the southern foot of the Wuyi Mountains, bordering Guangdong to the south and Jiangxi to the west, it has been a hub of ancient roads and a strategic frontier between Fujian, Guangdong, and Jiangxi provinces since ancient times, hence known as 'Fujian's Western Gateway'.
The Ting River flows through the city, and walking on the bluestone paths, strolling through the alleys, or visiting traditional shops, you can see the authentic local life everywhere.

An 800-year-old village, it is currently one of the most well-preserved Hakka ancient residential buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties in China.
There are no crowds or noise, just life in its most original form.

A mountain that rises abruptly from the plain, named 'Guanzhi' because its peak resembles a giant crown. Guanzhi Mountain is steep and rocky, resembling a budding lotus from afar, also known as Lotus Mountain. Quanbing's third-generation clear soup noodles (10 yuan/bowl, very delicious)
Old Masses clear soup noodles (8 yuan/bowl, the environment is not as good as Quanbing's but the taste is also great)
Luoqiao beef offal (we ordered three dishes and one soup for just over 100 yuan, the stir-fried beef and stir-fried beef blood are delicious. Liangqiang Luoqiao and Luoqiao Second Store are run by two brothers, with basically the same taste. Yipin stew pot (various soups for 10-20 yuan with solid ingredients, Fujian stewed soup is worth a try)
🏨Olive Homestay
160 yuan/night, conveniently located on Financial Street for dining and travel.

🗺Recommended Route (see the last image for the route)
1️⃣Taiping Bridge
Taiping Bridge is a double-corridor bridge, nearly a hundred meters long, with an elegant and simple design, upturned eaves and flying corners, like twin dragons flying over the Ting River, representing the heritage of Hakka corridor bridge skills and culture. The Hakka architecture on both sides of Tingzhou is distinctive, and it wouldn't be an overstatement to call it the little Fenghuang of Tingzhou.
2️⃣Xingxian Archway
The Xingxian Archway in Changting, located on East Street of Changting County, Fujian, is a wooden pavilion that is solid and sturdy, with fine carvings. The entire structure is like a wooden art piece, heavy and full of spirit.
3️⃣Baxi Pavilion
When we visited Tingzhou, the Baxi Pavilion was under renovation, so we could not enter to visit and could only stop to observe from the outside.
The eight joys of Tingzhou are the joy of wedding candles, the joy of adding a family member, the joy of coming of age, the joy of setting up a stove, the joy of moving house, the joy of being listed on the golden plaque, the joy of birthdays, and the joy of a bountiful harvest.
The "Tingzhou Baxi Pavilion" encapsulates the cultural essence of the Hakka people in Tingzhou, and is a microcosm of the life of the Hakka people in Tingzhou, adding luster to Changting, a city famous for its history and culture.
4️⃣Taian Bridge
This is a historical preservation bridge in Tingzhou, and it is also a better spot for photographing the ancient city wall of Tingzhou.
5️⃣Tingzhou Ancient City Wall (Jichuan Gate)
The current Jichuan Gate tower was rebuilt after consulting numerous ancient books and seeking opinions from various parties. The three big characters "Jichuan Gate" on the front of the city gate tower were inscribed by the Song Dynasty calligraphy master Huang Tingjian.
6️⃣Tingzhou Confucian Temple
The Tingzhou Confucian Temple, also known as the Kong Temple or Tingzhou Prefecture School, was built in the third year of the Shaoxing period of the Song Dynasty and is an important place for the promotion of Confucianism in the eight counties of Ting.
7️⃣Diantou Street
Diantou Street, located in Changting County, Longyan City, Fujian Province, was built during the Tang Dynasty. It is the most famous ancient street in Changting and was the earliest commercial district of the ancient city of Tingzhou. "Diantou" in the Hakka language refers to the best shops.
8️⃣Sanyuan Pavilion
Sanyuan Pavilion is located in the ancient city of Tingzhou, originally built during the Tang Dynasty's Dali period, originally named Yijiang Gate, later renamed Guangchu Gate, with a city tower built in the twelfth year of the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty, and renamed "Sanyuan Pavilion" during the Qing Dynasty.
9️⃣Wolong Academy
The Wolong Academy in Changting was originally built during the Shaoding period of the Southern Song Dynasty and is the earliest academy recorded in the historical documents of Tingzhou. After reconstruction, it has attracted a large number of tourists to visit and check in.
It's not just Hunan's Fenghuang! Fujian also has such a thousand-year-old ancient city!
International friend Louis Allee once said, 'China has the most beautiful two small towns, one is Hunan's Fenghuang and the other is Fujian's Changting.' Changting is really beautiful now! It's definitely worth a visit!!
🚉Travel Tips:
Take the high-speed train to Changting South Station.
After exiting the station, take a taxi or bus to the city center, which takes about 10-15 minutes by taxi.
If you're driving, head straight to the city center, find a place to park, and then walk around.
The city center is very small, but there are many shared electric bikes which are very practical, so it's recommended to ride these.
About Accommodation:
The county town is very small, so wherever you stay is convenient, as long as it's in the city center. Many homestays can't be reached directly by car, so I personally recommend staying in a hotel, as hotels in the city center are very convenient.

For dining, head to Shuidong Street (full of local snacks)
There are many costume rental shops and specialty stores on Diantou Street

My favorite must-mention dish is the winnowing basket board

Specialty Products Series 🎁
I recommend two of my favorite snacks: marinated duck feet and dried tofu
The dried tofu here is a bit sweet compared to other places and is really delicious; I specifically bought a big bag to take home
📍The ancient city of Longting is not big, and it takes about half a day to visit all the attractions. If you want a more in-depth tour or to try all the local foods, you can plan a two-day trip
In short, if you're used to a fast-paced life, coming here to experience the leisurely life of a small town is also a nice experience
Changting | A quaint ancient city, half filled with fireworks, half with poetry
If you find the ancient city of Quanzhou too crowded, why not take a stroll in Changting Ancient City in Longyan? It offers a more rustic, lively, and homely atmosphere. Changting Ancient City has a history of a thousand years, built by the mountains and waters, with many well-preserved ancient buildings that are also part of the local people's daily lives. I really like this kind of scenery that is full of the marks of time and yet so naturally beautiful.
📍Location: Changting Ancient City, Longyan
🚉Transportation tips:
🚄Take the high-speed train to 'Changting South Station'. After exiting the station, you can take a (about 20rmb) or take the routes 3 or 5 to the county town.
If you're driving, just head to the urban area, find a place to park, and the attractions are within walking distance.
🛵There are many shared electric scooters in the urban area, which are an alternative to taxis.
🎫Ticket: No ticket is needed to wander around the ancient city, but to visit the Jizhou Gate, Baxi Pavilion, Dafudi, and Wolong Academy, you need to buy tickets. A combined ticket for these four attractions is 88rmb.
📷The ancient city area is not large, and all attractions are within walking distance, making it very suitable for a citywalk.
🌃The night view is beautiful, with a light show, and a night cruise costs 70rmb per person.
There are many homestays in the ancient city, but many are located in the inner alleys where it's hard to reach directly by taxi. Hotels are relatively more convenient for transportation and are not expensive.
☕️There are many popular cafes along the riverbanks of the ancient city, with great views and photogenic spots. It's also nice to just relax in a cafe if you don't feel like walking.
The ancient city is small, and a simple tour can be done in half a day. If you want a more in-depth visit or to try all the local delicacies, a two-day trip is recommended. The city is busier on weekends and holidays, so it's suggested to visit on weekdays for a more leisurely small-town vibe.
Changting is really beautiful now 😘❤️🇨🇳
#chinatrip
Fujian!! You're confused here without promoting it! International friend Louis Ellie once said, "China has two of the most beautiful small towns, one is Fenghuang in Hunan and the other is Changting in Fujian." Changting is really beautiful now! It's worth a visit!! But this is a promise to me!! The method to determine the real difference between holidays in Changting is to listen to advice. The experience of public holidays is really poor, accommodation is expensive, and people are crowded!! Good accommodation on weekdays, Changting is very small during holidays, and two days and one night on weekends is enough. Let me, a native of Changting, tell you how to play and eat!! Attack on food, transportation, and accommodation attractions, complete all accommodations 5-700, currently locked in social activities. Take a mobile car to Changting South Station, 10-15 minutes after exiting the station, then take a taxi or bus to the city area, and take a taxi
The night view of the ancient city of Changting is really beautiful
Hunan Fenghuang and Fujian Changting are known as the most beautiful small cities in China.
Since I'm passing by Changting, I must take a look.
Arriving at Tingzhou Ancient City in the evening, let's start with the delicious food.
🌆: Changting Ancient City
📌: The ancient city is quite large, mainly extending on both sides of Jichuan Gate (refer to my route)
🅿️: Parking is really difficult, electric vehicle-friendly city
📸: Both day and night views are beautiful, suitable for photography
🚶🏻♂️My night tour route
Taste of Tingzhou ⇒ Baxi Pavilion ⇒ Shuidong Street ⇒ Tingzhou Ancient City Wall (Jichuan Gate) ⇒ Diantou Street ⇒ Confucian Temple ⇒ Wolong Academy
🍲Taste of Tingzhou
Follow the Ctrip introduction, no disappointments. Whether you like it or not, you have to try the soaked pig kidney, even if you don't eat it, you will like it, fresh and without any strange taste. Wine-scented river frog and abalone sauce tofu are also good.
🏯Baxi Pavilion
A very characteristic place, filled with a simple and elegant atmosphere. In addition, Baxi Pavilion also cleverly uses sound, light, electricity, and other modern technologies to vividly display the "eight joys" culture of the Tingzhou Hakka people. It's relatively cost-effective to buy a package ticket during the day, I skipped it at night.
🍡Shuidong Street
Characterized by the Republic of China-style architecture, Little Red Shanghai, and Hakka cuisine, it is a distinctive block where historical culture and commercial streets intertwine. Specialty snack street: potato cakes, boiled beef, dustpan boards, taro dumplings, soaked pig kidneys, etc.
🏘️Tingzhou Ancient City Wall (Jichuan Gate)
A very representative large city gate, it's more cost-effective to buy a joint ticket, you can climb the city wall, and it's also beautiful to take pictures at night, worth checking in for photos 📸.
🎑Diantou Street
A historical street, there are many old shops with history to visit, and it is also a paradise for foodies
🏯Confucian Temple
An important historical and cultural heritage, an important place to display and inherit Confucian culture. It retains its simple and spectacular appearance.
🐉Wolong Academy
It is said to be suitable for photography and checking in, the night tour of Wolong Academy, the entrance is still very magnificent. It's more cost-effective to buy a joint ticket during the day.
Changting Ancient City is a beautiful small city that blends ancient and modern. Although the night tour did not go deep into the attractions, it also felt the relaxed life of the small city, enjoying a sense of tranquility and composure here.
Hakka Capital - The Splendid Tingzhou (Part 9): Tingzhou Baxi Hall
The eight joys of Tingzhou represent eight kinds of joyful events in life, which are the joy of passing the imperial examination, the joy of marriage, the joy of childbirth, the joy of coming of age, the joy of setting up a new household, the joy of moving to a new home, the joy of birthdays, and the joy of a good harvest. Baxi Hall encapsulates the cultural essence of the Tingzhou Hakka people, presenting the traditional customs and etiquette associated with these eight joys in their entirety.
Seeing is believing. Only by entering the Tingzhou Baxi Hall can one enjoy the joy of the Tingzhou Hakka people and experience the profoundness of Tingzhou's folk culture.
Located in the historic Dongda Street, Baxi Hall is a typical Beijing 'Siheyuan' courtyard house with a cleverly arranged layout and a covered walkway leading to a small stage.
Outside the stage, the dougong brackets and the resting eaves are glittering with gold, dazzling to the eyes.
Above hangs a plaque that reads 'Yi Shi Rong Chang,' and on the pillars beside the stage hangs a couplet that expresses the refined pleasure of watching operas and listening to music. Inside the stage, another plaque with 'Ren Yi Wei De' and the door lintels with 'Chu Jiang' 'Ru Xiang' highlight the Hakka people's aspirations to honor their ancestors and achieve high official ranks.
Wooden staircases are on both sides of the stage.
On the second floor, there are exhibition halls for 'the joy of marriage,' 'the joy of childbirth,' 'the joy of coming of age,' 'the joy of setting up a new household,' 'the joy of passing the imperial examination,' and so on...
Continuing up to the third floor, the 'joy of moving to a new home,' 'the joy of birthdays,' and 'the joy of a good harvest' are further displayed.
Each exhibition hall showcases real objects, statues, images, and texts, making visitors feel as if they are in the midst of celebration.
Tingzhou Baxi Hall, a concentrated expression of the cultural essence of the Tingzhou Hakka people, is a microcosm of the life of the Hakka people in Tingzhou.
The Hakka people of Tingzhou tenaciously carry on many intangible cultural heritages, such as the 'Hundred Pot Feast,' 'Grass Dragon Parade,' 'Welcoming the Lantern Festival and Walking the Ancient Rituals,' 'Tingzhou Carved Paper Dragon Lantern,' and more, with real objects on display, offering a feast for the eyes.
Hakka Baxi Building
Hakka Capital - The Splendid Tingzhou (Part 7): Wolong Academy
If the ancient city walls and Diantou Street show us the past prosperity and glory of Changting, then Wolong Academy interprets this thousand-year-old city in a different way.
Wolong Academy is located near the ancient city of Changting, founded during the Baoyou period of the Southern Song Dynasty, named for the mountain terrain resembling a dragon lying on the ground.
Upon entering the main gate, a wall called the 'reflecting wall' faces you, with the characters for 'advance in virtue' inscribed upon it.
Walking west from the reflecting wall, there is a building called 'Long Xuetang'. This is an old residence donated by international movie star Jackie Chan, featuring the complete architectural style of the Hui school.
Leaving 'Long Xuetang' and heading north along the western corridor, a building facing south, called 'Zangjing Lou', has a couplet outside that reads: 'Full of learning, do not let down the moon over the Ting River when you raise your head; with the weight of family and country on your shoulders, always stir the tides of the Han sea at heart'.
Exiting from the east side door of 'Zangjing Lou', you walk down a long corridor shaded by green bamboo, and enter a place called 'Lecture Hall'.
During the Southern Song Dynasty, Zhu Xi once lectured here, and the youth of Tingzhou flocked to him. It is said that the words 'Lecture Hall' were inscribed by Zhu Xi himself.
Hundreds of years later, Wang Yangming visited this place, and the two great scholars of Neo-Confucianism and the School of Mind looked across time at each other, reflecting each other's brilliance.
Qiu Zhen Guan is a special exhibition hall of the academy, representing the Confucian doctrine of Wang Yangming's School of Mind, combined with their connection to Wolong Academy in promoting and lecturing on the Dao.
Wenchang Pavilion enshrines and venerates the Emperor Wenchang, an important place for scholars seeking fame and success in their studies.
To this day, although the sound of reading aloud can no longer be heard, the heart of advancing in virtue and cultivating oneself still remains.
Wolong Academy
Hakka Capital - The Splendid Tingzhou (Part 6): South Main Street
South Main Street is the central axis of the ancient city of Changting and is a core component of the four major historical districts of the Changting historical and cultural ancient city.
South Main Street was established during the Tang Dynasty and has always been the main residential area of Tingzhou. To this day, it retains many grand mansion-style residences and ancestral family temples, witnessing the years of social, economic, and cultural development in Tingzhou.
As the name suggests, South Main Street is located to the south of Changting County, extending north to the Sanyuan Pavilion Square, Zhaozheng Road, and the west wall of the former watchhouse; to the south along South Main Street to the area outside the Baozhu Gate city tower by the protective river; and to the east near the Tingzhou Hospital area.
The buildings on both sides of South Main Street are mostly wealthy homes and ancestral halls, reflecting the Hakka pursuit of Central Plains mansion-style architectural characteristics, with 'nine halls and eighteen wells,' three-entry and four-entry mansions, stylish and exquisite wood carvings, and finely crafted architectural details, all of which add to the rich Hakka architectural style and value of this historical district.
For example, the county-level cultural relics protection units such as the Lai's Tanyuan Public Ancestral Hall, Ziyun Public Ancestral Hall (Wu Residence), as well as the Lai family temple, Xinxin Alley ancient family ancestral halls, and so on.
There are also two important provincial-level cultural relics protection units on South Main Street: the Sanyuan Pavilion city tower and the Baozhu Tower city tower.
The Sanyuan Pavilion city tower (also known as Guangchu Men), located between Zhaozheng Road and Xinxin Alley, is at the core of the Sanyuan Pavilion Square and on the central axis of the South Main Street historical district.
The Sanyuan Pavilion was built during the Tang Dynasty and served as the ancient city gate for successive states, prefectures, roads, and exclusive administrative centers. The city tower is a brick, stone, and wood structure with a double-eaved Xieshan-style two-story pavilion. Covering an area of 520 square meters with a building area of 276 square meters, it is well-preserved to this day.
The Baozhu Tower city tower, located at the southwest extension of South Main Street, was built in the 40th year of the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty. The city gate faces north to south and is a double gate, connected in the middle by a horse trough. The city tower is a single-layer double-eaved Xieshan-style pavilion, covering an area of 876 square meters. Historically, the Red Fourth Army first entered Fujian through the Baozhu Gate, liberating Changting City, which has historical significance.
The ancient Baozhu Gate, Guangchu Gate, and others are relatively rare in ancient state capital city walls. After surviving the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, the city walls and gates are still well-preserved to this day.
The streets of South Main Street are paved with cobblestones, weathered by thousands of years of wind and rain. They still maintain their original appearance, and walking on these quaint traditional streets, imagining the horse trough inside the Baozhu city gate, one can almost hear the bell sounds of ancient mule and horse carts passing by, experiencing the echoes of history. Sanyuan Pavilion
Hakka Capital - The Splendid Tingzhou (Part 5): The Tingzhou Confucian Temple
In the center of the ancient city of Tingzhou stands a magnificent and elegant ancient building - the Tingzhou Confucian Temple. The Tingzhou Confucian Temple was originally built in the year 999 AD and was relocated to its current site in 1133.
The main gate of the Tingzhou Confucian Temple is a tall and wide stone structure carved with intricate designs - the Lingxing Gate. Lingxing represents the star of literature in the sky, and setting up a Lingxing Gate in temples dedicated to Confucius is to regard Confucius as a celestial body, possessing divine powers just like the stars in the sky.
Outside the Lingxing Gate to the west stands a stone stele inscribed with 'The Dismounting Spot of Officials Through the Ages'. The Confucian Temple is a place of high standards and solemnity, where civil officials passing by outside the gate must alight from their sedan chairs, and military officers must dismount from their horses.
Inside the Lingxing Gate is a semi-circular pool called the Pan Pool. In the past, scholars entering school were said to be 'entering the Pan'. Over the Pan Pool is a stone arch bridge - the Biyun Bridge.
In front of the Pan Pool are the three-doored Ji Gate and the Zhongzhai. Ji is an ancient weapon with three spearheads, hence the reference to the three large doors. In the past, the three doors were not opened at the same time; only the central door was opened for major ceremonies.
Above the Ji Gate hangs a square plaque with the calligraphy 'Confucian Temple'.
In front of the Dacheng Hall is a two-tiered stone balustrade terrace, and in the center of the terrace is a stone relief - the Dan Chi, which is usually found only in the imperial palace. Since Confucius was conferred by emperors throughout the ages, not only is there a Dan Chi, but there are also two thick coiled dragon stone columns in front of the Dacheng Hall.
Hanging on top of the hall is a plaque inscribed with 'Dacheng Hall' by Mr. Tong Yuwen, a famous calligrapher from Fujian Province and consultant to the Changting County Calligraphy Association.
On the north side of the Dacheng Hall, in the shrine, stands the camphor wood statue of the elderly Confucius, and above the statue hangs a huge plaque inscribed with 'Model Teacher for Ten Thousand Generations' by Emperor Kangxi, demonstrating the luxury, grandeur, and taste of the Confucian Temple that sets it apart from other temples.
The Tingzhou Confucian Temple
Hakka Capital - The Splendid Tingzhou (Part 4): Night Cruise on the Ting River
Taking a trip to Tingzhou, it is recommended to take a boat and enjoy a night cruise on the Ting River.
Departing from the Huiji Gate Wharf of the ancient city of Tingzhou, the route passes by Song Ci's Hangzhan, Taiping Bridge, Yingyue Pavilion, etc., featuring a light show, with mist occasionally rolling over the river, creating a fairyland-like atmosphere.
While crossing the Wutong Bridge on a painted boat, it feels like being in a moving painting, experiencing the mysterious ambiance of 'clouds and mist' swirling around, as if traveling through a tunnel of time, back to that ancient and beautiful era.
'Ten thousand households by the creek, green willows lock the smoke over Jichuan Bridge.' 'Jichuan Gate' is one of the landmark buildings of Changting, and taking a boat offers the best viewing and photo angle of Jichuan Gate.
As the painted boat slowly passes by Longtan, the stilted buildings and towering ancient trees on both banks are faintly visible under the night lights, presenting a scene so enchanting that it's hard to take it all in.
At the Mother's Fate 3D Water Screen Show, watch the themed water screen movie 'Tingzhou Boat Tales', with the boat as the medium, carrying the stories of the city.
After disembarking, you can walk along the ancient city wall of Tingzhou to Jichuan Gate.
The beauty of the night is so captivating.
