A One-Day Self-Driving Tour on the Great Ocean Road in Melbourne, Australia: Capture Every Moment
I planned a one-day self-driving tour with a group of friends to the Great Ocean Road in Melbourne, Australia. This was an unforgettable journey. The Great Ocean Road is famous for its magnificent coastline and natural scenery, and I was eager to explore this beautiful land even before we set off.
Located on the southeastern coast of Victoria, Australia, the Great Ocean Road stretches about 243 kilometers. Through the car window, you can see long stretches of beach, with the blue sea contrasting sharply with the golden sand. The waves crash against the shore, creating a pleasant sound.
Next, we arrived at the famous Twelve Apostles. These towering rock formations stand in the sea like natural sculptures, showcasing the grandeur and power of nature.
Later, we reached Apollo Bay, a charming small town with beautiful beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. I had lunch at a local Chinese restaurant, the only one open because we arrived late for lunch. 🍚
After lunch, we headed to the coast of Apollo Bay! Walking along the coast, our steps were accompanied by the sound of the waves, feeling the gentle touch of the sea on the sand.
Next, we visited the Great Ocean Road Memorial Arch, a landmark that attracts countless tourists. Finally, we arrived at the Cape Otway Lightstation, a cute lighthouse perched on a spectacular coastline, making it a highlight of the Great Ocean Road and a great spot for photos.

The world's most beautiful coastal road | Classic must-play travel route
Presumably, it is the first checkpoint for many people to visit Melbourne, and it is easy to reach the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne.
Our itinerary follows the coastal road, and we drove and played for more than 6 hours until we reached the Twelve Apostles. The Great Ocean Road is about 1-1.5 hours' drive from Melbourne (about 75 kilometers).
The Great Ocean Road can be said to be a paradise for nature lovers, with spectacular coastlines and dense tropical rainforests intertwined. Along this road, you can easily capture various Instagram-worthy scenery.
Route: Great Ocean Road Memorial Archway - Split Point Lighthouse - The Grotto - Gibson Steps - Twelve Apostles and many other attractions that I can't remember. I heard that the rocks of the Twelve Apostles are slowly disappearing, so I really really have to go once in my lifetime.

Truly the Great Ocean Road
Getting There - Head southwest from the city of Melbourne. Follow along the ocean road highway.
Attractions - Tons! Bells Beach Lookout, Point Addis Beach, Anglesea Beach, Twelve Apostles, Childers Cove.
Hotels - Seafarer’s Getaway (refer to one of my earlier posts about it)
This is a must-visit activity when visiting Melbourne. We rented a car from Jucy and just drove along the great ocean road highway. There are tons of places to stop along the way with amazing views of the ocean and geographical landmarks.
Many people surf along some of the beaches here. And on some occasions, you’d be able to see whales at some of the lookout points!

This is by far my favourite accommodations. Period. Each room is basically a small house on its own which provides ample privacy. You wake up every morning overlooking the ocean from The Great Ocean Road. There’s a kitchen for you to prep meals to have a more intimate or cozy dining experience. There’re even alpacas you can feed in the vicinity. If you’re lucky, you can use the telescope to look at some stars at night!

#celebratewithtrip
the next stop of my great ocean road road trip was actually the Gibson steps. it can be quite tiring as there were a lot of stairs to reach to the destination and climbing all the way down would also mean that you will have to climb up again to reach your original place of arrival. nevertheless the view was really pretty and fabulous and you can take very nice pictures over here. would highly recommend to come here if you have the chance during your road trip. you can take plenty of memorable pictures here and do note it can be quite sandy so you might want to remove your shoes for more comfort.

Great Ocean Road is a very popular tourists place close to Melbourne. There is a place called pebble point which is located at 20 Old Coach Rd, Princetown VIC 3269, Australia where is an amazing place for glamping and just a short 30mins drive away from the great ocean road!
You are able to spend the night, watch the sunset as this is located on top of a hill which overlooks the wilderness.
The surrounding quietness makes this a perfect place to wind down, enjoy the wind blowing softly at your face and enjoy self-prepared meal from pebble point facilities. Indeed a perfect simple yet romantic Getaway in down under melbourne Australia!

Apollo Bay Staycation
Had the most amazing stay at apollo bay with Seafarers Getaway.
Imaging having a bbq, with great food, wine and an amazing view of the ocean and the sunset. It was just breathtaking.
Apollo bay was also just a 10mins drive away with great food especially the fish(Barramundi) and chips. Seafarers Getaway is also approx a 45-60mins drive to the popular great ocean road and also to the famous otway rainforest where you can catch glowworm at night.
We also get to feed the lamas right before check-in and also seeing them grazing the grass early in the morning!
This is a place that I would definitely come back.

Great Ocean Road Scenic Spots
Great Ocean Road has a couple of scenic spots that you can stop.
The above photos consist of a few:
- The London Bridge
- The Razor Back
- 12 Apostles
- Thunder Cave
Most of these scenic shots are approx 500-800m one way so it's a relatively good hike and also wheelchair friendly!

#tripaway Most of people taught tower bridge is London bridge but it wasn’t true. London bridge is on the left side and tower bridge is on the right side from London Bridge station. At London bridge, you may see the shard, tower bridge and other buildings. It was a nice experience to see the red double decker bus passing by us on the bridge.

The weathered boulder turned out to be so beautiful. The shipwreck coast & London Bridge
Great Ocean Road, which cannot be missed by the Great Ocean Road, is located in the southwest of Melbourne. It is a coastal road in Australia with a total length of nearly 300 kilometers. With beaches, cliffs and forests, hundreds of miles of roads are breathtaking and beautiful. The Great Ocean Road is known as the most beautiful coastal road in the world. It has also been listed by countless travel enthusiasts. in.
Twelve Apostles is the most well-known scenic spot on the Great Ocean Road. Many people drive the Great Ocean Road and look back after seeing the twelve disciples. This is a pity. In fact, there are still many things to watch on the Great Ocean Road. This is especially recommended for the Shipwreck Coast and London Bridge.
Shipwreck Coast: It is only about 10 minutes drive from the Twelve Apostles. As its name suggests, there have been more than 80 shipwrecks, large and small, due to the rush of the terrain. The most widely known of them was a British immigrant ship named "Loch Ard" on the way to Melbourne in June 1878. In the case of death, 52 people were killed and only 2 were still alive.
Today, visitors can walk along the canyon to the beach, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the canyon, blue sky and white clouds, the blue sea, the sun shines like a jade-like luster, strolling on the soft sand, imagining not So many lives have fallen here.
London Bridge: The London Bridge is also a weathered boulder. Due to the erosion of the waves, two round holes are formed, which are double arched and look like a stone bridge. Perhaps it was exiled to Australia. In order to ease the feelings of homesickness, the British were named "London Bridge".
The London Bridge on the Great Ocean Road In the evening of January 1, 1990, the circular hole connected to the land suddenly collapsed and separated from the mainland, so the London Bridge we are seeing is actually a broken bridge in London.
The sea breeze on the edge of the London Bridge is extremely ferocious and the wind is particularly large. In addition to the summer, the spring and autumn and winter should pay attention to the cold and warm.

Australia | Must-see hotel on the Great Ocean Road to see the scenery starry sky alpaca
This time the Great Ocean Road chooses to live in Seafarers Getaway in Apollo Bay, this hotel is built on the hillside of the road, the bedroom is the floor-to-ceiling windows The scenery is beautiful!
Room type must book a two-bedroom villa, the one bedroom is at the bottom, not high enough to be wide. We are very fortunate to get the highest row of three rooms on the side (there is only one side in the middle), the main bedroom is full of large glass windows on both sides, it is super beautiful!
The room is apartment-style, you can cook for yourself. Driving in 5 minutes is the town of Apollo Bay. There are restaurants and supermarkets. It is highly recommended to buy food and come back to do it yourself, then look at the scenery on the outside terrace, and suddenly feel that this is life, only one night is really reluctant to leave.
The Great Ocean Road has very little light pollution, the air is clear, and you can see the starry sky at night. It is a pity that there was a cloud that night, and only one of them was photographed in the gap between the clouds. In the Milky Way, the stars were shining. It turns out that the stars are really blue, and the book is not a lie.
There are all pastures around the house. You can also tease and watch the alpacas you want to laugh at.
This hotel is very red. It is said that the peak season should be booked a few months in advance. The off-season is much better. We booked it almost ten days in advance.

Australia's Great Ocean Road Self-driving | Apollo Bay's net red hotel with grass mud horse ranch
This Great Ocean Road self-driving We stayed at Seafarers Gateway Resort in Apollo Bay for one night, this hotel is real Facing the sea, the sea view is super beautiful, and it also comes with a grass mud horse ranch. It is great to scribble mud horses!
If you live in this house, it is recommended to choose the family room on the top of the mountain like us. It is very quiet. It is surrounded by the green grass slope of the sea. The floor-to-ceiling windows can overlook Apollo. The view is full of fried chicken. It is real. Facing the sea. In the evening, you can look up at the stars, because there is no light pollution, you can see the stars in the sky, the beautiful cry! On the second day, I went to the balcony on the doorstep to eat breakfast on the background of the South Pacific Ocean. ~
This hotel also has an alpaca ranch, where you can happily scribble mud horses at any time. Be careful when you are born!
Speaking of the Great Ocean Road, its a bit of a day to drive back and forth, or staying for one night is better. If you are driving for two days and one night, it is recommended to live in this net red hotel with grass mud horse~

Promise me you'll go to the Southern Hemisphere and relax.
Last September, I went to Australia because I saw a special offer for flights: [Chengdu to Melbourne, direct, tax included, CNY 3,200]. I immediately asked my friend to go with me, applied for a visa, and realized my dream of driving along the Great Ocean Road.
The most important thing about this trip to Australia was driving along the Great Ocean Road!
I love road trips, I'm obsessed with the scenery along the way, and I want to collect every sunset.
Because my flight was to and from Melbourne, I took a circular route, unlike other guides that go directly from south to north or north to south.
🧳Route: Melbourne - Great Ocean Road (Penguin Island - Apollo Bay - Twelve Apostles) - back to Melbourne - Gold Coast (by plane) - drive to Brisbane - back to Gold Coast - Sydney (by plane) - Melbourne (by plane)

Melbourne Road trip
First time to Melbourne and was blown away by its vibrance. Yes a main city in Australia that is packed with so much to do, to see and to explore including dine and wine.
On the nature front, we have the great ocean road with numerous attractions along its path, 12 apostles, Apollo Bay just to name a few.
Winery is an understatement and pretty good whites in the regions. Food wise, one can enjoy the yummy Western style to Asian delights.

Driving the Great Ocean Road was a breathtaking journey along one of the world’s most scenic coastal routes. The iconic Twelve Apostles, towering limestone stacks rising from the ocean, were awe-inspiring. I stopped at charming coastal towns, explored the lush Otway Rainforest, and marvelled at the rugged beauty of Loch Ard Gorge. The winding road offered stunning views at every turn, from dramatic cliffs to pristine beaches. The blend of natural wonders and serene landscapes made this road trip truly unforgettable.

Lovely place to spend quality time with family!
Decided to try caravan this time and it was amazing. My family loves it. This is something we won’t get to do back home. Had a wonderful time and it definitely worth doing it all over again. Stevensons Falls
#australiatrip Beautiful fall. Great spot for photos and exercise. When we went there, there were lots of families so this is definitely a place for families to go. Just a reminder there is parking fees of $3, but it is for a good cause, I think it contributes to the construction of the park. This place is beautiful! As soon as you walk into the entrance there’s a lot of picnic tables and chairs which was good! Good for a day trip or spend the night at the campsite just around the corner from the Waterfall. There are also toilets at the main entrance, plus you can swim at the waterfall too. Nice cold, fresh water!

8 Must-Visit Attractions on the Great Ocean Road
1. Little Red Riding Hood Lighthouse: The lighthouse itself is quite ordinary, but the viewing platform behind it offers the most beautiful scenery. The long coastline stretches to the horizon, shrouded in mist, blending the sea and sky into one.
-
2. Teddy’s Lookouts: This is a viewing platform located at the top of Lorne town. From here, you can overlook the winding coastal road of the Great Ocean Road, which clings to the mountains like a jade belt around a maiden's waist. It's breathtakingly beautiful, and if you're lucky, you might even spot whales. It's worth mentioning that you must take the road from the beginning of the town; otherwise, the slope is too steep for most vehicles to climb.
-
3. Koala Cafe: Located between Lorne and Apollo Bay, it's not the cafe itself that's the attraction but the koalas and kangaroos you can find here. Known as Little Switzerland, you can find all sorts of wildlife along the riverside.
-
4. Marriner Lookout: This is a privately donated viewing point where you can see the entire Apollo Bay town, which looks like a trident. It's a fantastic spot for photos, and some visitors say this is the pinnacle of the Great Ocean Road.
-
5. Mait's Rest Rainforest: This was once a habitat for dinosaurs and served as a resting place for horses during wartime. The towering trees and giant ferns, with sunlight filtering through the gaps, make you feel like you're on the set of Avatar.
-
6. Twelve Apostles: This attraction needs no introduction. Visitors come here to count if there are really twelve rocks. In fact, there aren't, and there never were. The original name was Sow and Piglets, but it was changed for a better story and a more appealing name.
-
7. Loch Ard Gorge: This area feels even more impressive than the Twelve Apostles, especially in the afternoon when the sun is out. The various rock formations carved by the sea are concentrated here, making it incredibly spectacular.
-
8. The Grotto: This place features a circular cave with unique limestone terrain. The view from the cave entrance, looking out at the sea and sky, is truly a sight to behold. Perhaps this is where the phrase 'a world within a world' comes from.

Scenery of the Great Ocean Road in Australia
The Great Ocean Road was built in memory of the soldiers who participated in the First World War, including many veterans. More than 3,000 workers contributed their hard work to its construction. The road began construction in 1919 and was completed in 1932. The Great Ocean Road winds along the west coast of Victoria, offering visitors magnificent ocean views and countless beach activities.

Took the photo of my life on the Great Ocean Road! (With Tesla self-driving guide)
I went to the Great Ocean Road three times before I took the perfect foggy photo!! 2 days and 1 night on the Great Ocean Road, I experienced sunny weather, fog, strong wind, and heavy rain. The weather on the Great Ocean Road is really unpredictable!! It's because of the unpredictable weather that makes the 276-kilometer Great Ocean Road more fun to drive.
·
The most beautiful shooting spot on the Great Ocean Road is Gibson Steps! Gibson Steps! Gibson Steps! I have to say it three times. Walking down the Gibson Steps, you can see the big rocks and watch the sunset on the beach. It's only a few minutes' drive from the Twelve Apostles lookout. There are fewer people in the morning and at sunset. Whether you can encounter the right fog depends on your luck~
·

The weather really determines the watchability of the Great Ocean Road. The weather was great on the first day, sunny all the way, and there was fog at sunset, which made every photo look good. It rained on the second day, and the wind was so strong that I was in a mess. I had to leave the coastline in a hurry and wander around the farm near Warrnambool. I really like the farms in Australia, the cows are so cute.

Accommodation:
There are quite a few towns where you can stay on the Great Ocean Road. Many tourists will stay in Apollo Bay. If you want to take pictures of the sunset at the Twelve Apostles, I suggest you stay in Port Campbell like I did. It's only a 10-minute drive from the Twelve Apostles and about 10 minutes from London Bridge.

Self-driving:
I experienced driving a Tesla Model Y on the Great Ocean Road for everyone, and I really didn't have any range anxiety.
The starting point of the Great Ocean Road, Geelong, and the end point, Warrnambool, both have Tesla's own superchargers. I set off from Geelong with a full charge and drove along the coastline, stopping and taking pictures along the way. When I arrived in Warrnambool, I still had 35% of the battery left. After charging, I drove back to Melbourne from the inland with 40% of the battery left. I only needed to charge twice for the round trip on the Great Ocean Road, and the supercharger was basically full within 40 minutes. At present, Model Y is still free to charge, I rented a Tesla to save fuel, but I didn't expect to save electricity, it's really great~
In addition to Geelong and Warrnambool, there are also 2 superchargers on the inland highway section, I remember they are in Cobden and Colac, ensuring that there is no range anxiety along the way~ Tesla car owners can rest assured to charge on the Great Ocean Road!
