Journey Through Time: Unveiling the Ancient City of Anyang and Its Rich Cultural Heritage
#ancienttown #100waysoftravel #china #anyang #yinxu #yinxumuseum #archeologicalsite #oraclebonescript
During our visit to Anyang, one of China's most ancient cities, we immersed ourselves in its rich historical and cultural heritage. Anyang, known as the cradle of Chinese civilization and the birthplace of oracle bone script (甲骨文), is home to the ancient Shang Dynasty capital and numerous archaeological treasures.
We managed to explore several remarkable spots, including the serene Tianning Temple (天宁寺庙) and the iconic Wenfeng Pagoda (文峰塔), both offering a glimpse into traditional Chinese architecture. We also visited the Yinxu Ruins (殷墟景区), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the oracle bones—the earliest form of Chinese writing—were discovered. Throughout Anyang, traces of oracle bone script can be seen everywhere, connecting the city to its ancient past. At the Chinese Character Museum, we deepened our understanding of the evolution of Chinese script and its profound impact on culture.
To top it off, we strolled through the vibrant Cangxiang street, experiencing the local traditions and lively atmosphere.
Anyang left a lasting impression on us, and if you ever have the chance, spending more time here to learn about oracle bone script would be a rewarding experience.

Magnolia Magic: A Serendipitous Encounter on the Way to Yinxu Museum
#chinatrip #100waysoftravel#flowerblossom #magnolia #Yinxu
As we walked from the Yinxu Temple Ruins to the Yinxu Museum, we unexpectedly came across a vast and beautiful magnolia garden. Coming from a tropical country, it was our first time seeing so many magnolias in different colors. Even on a cloudy day, their elegance and beauty were undeniable.
The magnolias filled the air with a delightful fragrance, but since they bloom high up on the trees, capturing them in photos was challenging. Nonetheless, their charm and scent left us utterly captivated.

Exploring the Ancient Mysteries of Yin Xu: Where History and Archaeology Come to Life
#chinatrip #Henan #Yinxu #archeology #china_history #100waysoftravel
As passionate lovers of Chinese history and archaeology, our most anticipated destination was undoubtedly the Yin Xu in Anyang.
Yin Xu, the ancient capital of the late Shang Dynasty, is famous for being the site where the earliest Chinese script, the oracle bone inscriptions, was discovered. It’s also the cradle of Shang Dynasty bronze civilization. The royal tombs at Yin Xu are especially worth a visit.
🎫🎟️The entrance ticket to the Yin Xu site includes admission to the royal tombs, and there’s a free shuttle service to take visitors back and forth.
We explored several key exhibitions:
📌M260 Tomb Exhibition Hall – Located in the southern part of the eastern royal tomb area, this “jia”-shaped tomb is where the famous national treasure, the Simuwu Ding, was unearthed. The tomb also contained 22 human skulls buried together in the tomb’s filling.
📌Chariot and Horse Pit Exhibition Hall – This hall showcases the remains of two chariots and horses, with detailed displays explaining the structure, harnessing techniques, and uses of the ancient chariots.
📌Burial Exhibition Hall – Compared to the human skulls displayed at the China Archaeology Museum, the burial pits here are even more shocking and somber. The sacrificial pits, known as "row burial pits," are neatly arranged, with each group representing a separate sacrificial event. Most pits contained sacrificial human remains, including those buried alive or killed before burial. The sacrifices were mainly prisoners of war, with some being slaves. The sight of the countless bones conveys a chilling reminder of a time when brutality overshadowed civilization.

Springtime Encounter at Anyang's Historic Tianning Temple
#chinatrip #100waysoftravel #anyang
Anyang's Tianning Temple, located in the ancient cultural city of Anyang, is a Buddhist temple with a history spanning over a thousand years, dating back to the Northern Wei Dynasty.
On a spring afternoon, I had a chance encounter with someone charming amidst the serenity of this ancient temple. Unfortunately, due to ongoing renovations, the tower was closed to visitors, but the beauty of the place was still captivating.
As a significant center of Buddhist culture during the Northern Wei period, Tianning Temple's ancient tower is one of Anyang's most famous historical sites, rich with timeless allure.

Wangling Archeology Site, Yinxu Ruins, An'Yang, Henan. This is true that it's a archaeological site. The excavations are still in a process, but major area was already exposed and available for tourists. Well, at first it is pretty interesting to take a look at the excavation process and understand how is it hard to do such kind of archaeological studies. Second, the artifact collection is well preserved, therefore allowing to make it familiar with details. Third, the going underground is some kind of excitement. These large spaces below the earth and constructions are very attractive for visiting.

And these ancient masterpieces if calligraphy created from bones could be found there. When walking along side, the feeling of presence of something immense accompanies you during journey. By another hand, these patterns have the great historical and cultural significance. And I was glad to have a chance to familiarize myself with it.

Just wow!
I have never seen before these things. Well, speaking without any emotions, these are unique artifacts. The excavations offer to take a look at chariots of royal family. There are also horse skeletons. It looks very impressive. That time the unlucky horses were buried together with other belongings during funereal of royal family member.
The dignity of this place is real objects, not replicas, and it creates the atmosphere of mystery. I recommend to spend time to visit this place.

Anyang's "Ding" is great: the great Shang civilization.
"The destiny of the black bird,
descended and gave birth to the Shang,
dwelling in the vast land of Yin."
With the black bird as the totem,
bronze as the ritual vessel,
and writing as the record,
the Shang people gathered the brilliant prehistoric civilization, inherited the initial state of the Xia dynasty, and formed the magnificent Shang civilization in the integration and coexistence... (The third part of the Henan Anyang trip)

The Wenfeng Pagoda in the sunset glow.
Have you ever seen a pagoda with a large top and small bottom, like a horn?
The Wenfeng Pagoda, also known as the Tianning Temple Pagoda, is located in Tianning Temple. It was built in the Later Zhou Dynasty of the Five Dynasties period. It is a brick and wood structure, dense eaves-style pagoda, with a total height of 38.65 meters, divided into five floors. The pagoda is octagonal in shape, with high reliefs of Buddhist stories on the eight sides of the first floor. The pagoda body expands outward from bottom to top, forming a horn (or umbrella) shape with a large top and small bottom, which is rare in China. The pagoda is octagonal in shape, with high reliefs of Buddhist stories on the eight sides of the first floor, which are exquisitely carved. Originally, you could climb to the top of the pagoda along the spiral staircase inside the pagoda, but unfortunately, it is no longer allowed to climb the pagoda... (One of the Henan Anyang trips)

A seriously underrated city in Henan!
"Destined by the black bird, the Shang Dynasty was born, and the land of Yin was vast."
From the Henan Museum to the Chinese Character Museum to the Yin Ruins Museum, I have been fully immersed in the Shang Dynasty these days. While marveling at the brilliant civilization of more than 3,000 years ago, I also lament that there is nothing new under the sun... For example, the ancients also divined everything.
There are people and stories behind every artifact. History rolls forward, and more than 3,000 years later, there will be people looking at everything we do now.
🌟 Anyang, this treasure city is worth recommending!

There is also a film that you must see, absolutely beautiful.

Anyang Yin Ruins.
This is the capital of a dynasty more than 3,000 years ago, and the place where the earliest mature Chinese characters were discovered. It is an underground museum with numerous precious relics, and the cradle of modern Chinese archaeology. This is Anyang Yin Ruins.
According to historical records, the capital of the Shang Dynasty was moved several times in the early period. In 14th century BC, King Pan Geng moved the capital here, and Yin remained the capital of the Shang Dynasty until the reign of King Zhou. After King Wu of Zhou defeated King Zhou and destroyed the Shang Dynasty, this place gradually became ruins, hence the name Yin Ruins.
Yin Ruins is a treasure trove of culture. With the deepening of excavation, it continues to bring surprises: more than 50 palace and temple ruins, 12 royal tombs, thousands of tombs of nobles and commoners, 1,000 sacrificial pits, 5 workshops, more than 30 chariot and horse pits, and a large number of oracle bones, bronzes, jades, bone artifacts, and pottery. It presents a three-dimensional image of ancient Chinese society and is a world-renowned ancient cultural site.
Oracle bone script, named after its inscription on turtle shells and animal bones, was prevalent during the Shang Dynasty. It mainly records divination pronouncements from the time of King Pan Geng's move to Yin until King Zhou, and is the earliest form of Chinese writing. The discovery of oracle bone script in Yin Ruins can be traced back to 1899. At that time, Wang Yirong, a late Qing Dynasty official and epigraphist, found symbols similar to seal script on "dragon bone" (a traditional Chinese medicine). After repeated research, he determined that it was an ancient script and began collecting "dragon bone" for research. However, the Eight-Nation Alliance soon occupied Beijing, and Wang Yirong, unwilling to endure national humiliation, jumped into a well and died. His collection of oracle bones was sold to Liu E, author of "Travels of Lao Can". Liu E selected more than 1,000 pieces and printed them into a book - "Iron Cloud Collection of Turtle Shells", which is the world's first book on oracle bone script. It caused a sensation in China and abroad, revealing the ancient Chinese script that existed more than 3,000 years ago. However, it was not until 1915 that the epigraphist Luo Zhenyu finally found the origin of "dragon bone" in Xiaotun Village, Anyang, Henan Province. The excavation of Yin Ruins, which began in 1928, opened the way for the study of oracle bone script. In the temple area of Yin Ruins, there are numerous oracle bone kilns, which have unearthed about 150,000 oracle bones, shocking the world. Currently, among the more than 4,000 existing oracle bone characters, more than 1,000 have been identified (to encourage the study of oracle bone script, the China National Museum of Writing offers a reward of 100,000 yuan for each oracle bone character deciphered and confirmed. However, to date, only one scholar has successfully identified a character).
Houmuwu Ding (Simuwu Ding) After the discovery of oracle bone script in Yin Ruins, local villagers gradually became aware of and participated in the "treasure hunt". The Houmuwu Ding was unearthed by villagers in 1939. Later, fearing that it would be looted by the Japanese, it was reburied underground. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the ding was unearthed again. It was first stored in the Anyang County Government, and then transported to the Nanjing Central Museum (now Nanjing Museum). After the completion of the National Museum of Chinese History, it was stored there. It is currently housed in the National Museum. The ding is inscribed with the three characters "Houmuwu". According to research, it was made by King Zu Geng or Zu Jia of the Shang Dynasty to worship his mother, Lady Wu. In our generation's history textbooks, it was called Simuwu大方鼎 (Simuwu Large Tripod Cauldron). Later, the academic community proposed a new interpretation of the inscription on the ding, changing "Simu" to "Hou". The Houmuwu Ding is massive and dignified, with exquisite and intricate decorations. It is the largest and heaviest bronze ritual vessel unearthed to date, showcasing not only the superb bronze casting technology of the Shang Dynasty, but also the sacrificial culture of that time. It is an outstanding representative of ancient Chinese bronze art.
Tomb of Fu Hao Fu Hao was the queen of King Wu Ding of the Shang Dynasty, and the first female general recorded in Chinese history. Although the tomb of Fu Hao is not large, it is well preserved and has a very rich collection of burial objects. A total of 1,928 artifacts of different materials were unearthed, including bronzes, jades, gemstones, and ivory. Among them are a large tripod cauldron engraved with "Simu Xin", a unique owl-shaped zun (wine vessel) of Fu Hao, and a three-sectioned steamer, which was unveiled for the first time. The tomb of Fu Hao is the only well-preserved Shang Dynasty royal tomb excavated to date, and the only one that can be linked to and dated by oracle bone script, and to identify the tomb owner and her identity. It is a milestone in the field of Chinese archaeology and Shang Dynasty history.
The old building of the Yin Ruins Museum was built in 2005 and is a single-story underground structure. In order to better protect and display more unearthed relics, a new Yin Ruins Museum was built and opened in February 2024.
There is a free shuttle bus from the Yin Ruins Palace Area to the Royal Tombs Area, which takes about 20 minutes. After visiting, you can return on the same bus.

Cute exhibits at Anyang Museum.
On October 2, we visited Anyang Museum, the second stop of our trip. We visited Yin Ruins Museum yesterday and planned to visit Anyang Museum today. We arrived at around 9:00 in the morning. There are free parking lots on both sides, which is very convenient. When we entered Anyang Museum, we saw many students doing homework, reading books, and studying at the small tables on the second floor. The atmosphere was great. The logo of Anyang Museum is at the front. It includes oracle bone inscriptions, the Eight Diagrams, chariots, bronzeware, bamboo slips, and even modern books. Various elements from ancient times to the present are combined together, which are not messy at all and run through ancient and modern times.
There were not many visitors, so the experience was good. No reservation is required.
We followed the volunteer guide from the first exhibition hall and listened to the guide's explanation along the historical river from the Yin and Shang Dynasties. From bronzeware to oracle bone inscriptions, from pottery to bronze mirrors, from pottery figurines to porcelain, the exhibits are diverse, showing the history of Anyang.
I took a few photos of pottery figurines and Zhen tomb beasts. They are cute and have different shapes. The owner must have an interesting soul.

A brief account of the ancient Tiening Temple and Wenfeng Pagoda in Anyang.
On October 2, after breakfast, I went to Tiening Temple at 8 o'clock. Following the navigation instructions, I entered the old city and followed the one-way street. There were many old houses and old buildings on both sides of the road. When I arrived at Tiening Temple, there was a parking lot next to it. Maybe it was early, there were plenty of parking spaces. After changing the ticket at the ticket office, I asked for a tour guide to explain and started the tour of Tiening Temple and Wenfeng Pagoda. Tiening Temple is very small, and it takes half an hour to finish the tour. Tiening Temple was built in the Later Zhou Dynasty and is a folk temple. After the war, only a small part of the building remains. The most eye-catching thing about Tiening Temple is Wenfeng Pagoda, which is a brick and wood structure with 5 layers and 8 corners. It is small at the bottom and large at the top, light at the top and heavy at the bottom, and the design is ingenious. The top of the tower is a Tibetan-style bowl-shaped tower, which looks like a reduced version of the White Tower in Beihai, Beijing, placed on the top of the tower. The brick carvings around it are exquisite, with iron chains and four-clawed dragons. The scenes of the Buddha's birth, practice, preaching, and nirvana are vivid. From March of this year, the tower is no longer allowed to climb, which is regrettable.
Although the courtyard is small, the begonias, pomegranates, bamboos and various trees and plants are lush, and the birdsong is clear in the ears, like a pure land in the downtown, which makes people feel pure and longing.
There is a two-story small tower in the Dennis parking lot behind, which is also a part of the original Tiening Temple. The tower body is engraved with the Eight Diagrams, and the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are combined into one. The aunts next to them are chatting, and the children are playing, which is inexplicably matched.

"National Day Tour" first stop: Yin Ruins Museum.
Departed from Beijing at 5 am on October 1st to Yin Ruins. Encountered a traffic jam on the way, arrived in Anyang at 2 pm, had a local snack and went straight to Yin Ruins Museum. In the first half of this year, I just studied the course of "Sanlian Civilization Tracing" in Sanlian Weekly, and I am in the stage of being super interested in Erlitou, Yin Ruins and other civilizations. I am full of expectations for the first stop of this trip to Yin Ruins Museum.
Yin Ruins Museum is a huge three-story square building. The exterior is the green of bronze ware, and many bronze ware elements are used. The first floor is the chariot pit exhibition hall. According to the order of the exhibition introduced by Sanlian, the chariot pit exhibition hall is visited first. In the exhibition hall, many different chariot and horse cultural relics are seen. The expansion of the Shang Dynasty was very important to the bronze ware and chariot. It is a pity that there are no archaeologists to clean up the relics today.
Enter the basic exhibition hall on the second floor. When entering the second floor exhibition hall, the most eye-catching is the treasure of the museum, "Simu Xin Ding". The simplicity and solemnity of the bronze ritual vessels reveal the king's air. There are also many animal bronzes, which make people feel very cute.
Wuding, Fu Hao, and Yachang are undoubtedly celebrities in the museum. The tombs reflect the order of the Shang Dynasty at that time. The tombs of different levels of nobles and civilians are very different. The third floor, Zihe Renzai-Oracle Special Exhibition, presents his exchanges with Wuding and Fu Hao from various aspects such as sacrifice, farming, weather, and hunting.
The Shang civilization is basically in the same historical period as ancient Egypt, ancient Maya, ancient Babylon, and ancient India. When other ancient civilizations have been interrupted, the order of the Shang civilization is still affecting China and even East Asia.
The most friendly thing about the museum is that it stops operating at 8:30 in the evening. We have time to visit the cultural relics slowly and imagine what the Huan River was like 3,000 years ago.

Tian Ning Temple Pagoda in Anyang.
Located in the bustling city of Anyang, the ancient capital of seven dynasties, there is a strange pagoda called Tian Ning Temple Pagoda. The unique appearance of the pagoda is the only one in the existing ancient pagodas in China. Tian Ning Temple Pagoda is also known as Wenfeng Pagoda, commonly known as Dasi, and the area where it is located is named Wenfeng District. Tian Ning Temple faces north and south, with ancient trees in the courtyard, ancient pagoda scenery is ancient and elegant, unique, and is a landmark building in Anyang City.

On the road: Anyang - Exploring the remains of the Shang Dynasty.
Leaving Handan and heading south to the first stop in Henan Province - Anyang, I have always wanted to explore the site where the Shang Dynasty ruins were discovered, so I decided to stay in Anyang for three days.
On the first day, I visited the Yin Ruins Museum in the morning to learn about the history of the Shang Dynasty. After that, I drove to the Yin Ruins Park to see the archaeological remains and the tomb of Fu Hao. In the afternoon, I went to Yuanlin to visit Yuan Shikai's tomb. As it was only 3:30 pm when I left Yuanlin, I drove to Tianning Temple to see the thousand-year-old Wenfeng Pagoda. Parking at the scenic spots is 5 yuan for an unlimited time.
On the second day, I drove to Linzhou to visit the Red Flag Canal Scenic Area. I first went to the Red Flag Canal Memorial Hall and the Fen Shui Gate Scenic Area, then drove to the Qingnian Cave Scenic Area, which is 23 kilometers away. There are shuttle buses between the scenic areas. There is a parking lot for self-driving, which costs 5 yuan for an unlimited time.
On the third day, I drove to Tangyin, first to visit the Yili City where King Wen of Zhou deduced the Eight Trigrams, and then to visit the Yue Fei Temple, where I paid tribute to the loyal and patriotic general.
I didn't go to the China Character Museum, leaving some thoughts and reasons to come again. In the afternoon, I went to the next stop, the capital of the Song Dynasty - Kaifeng.
