We stayed at Battlesteads for two nights and enjoyed great accommodation (in one of the very spacious lodges) good food and drinks and a wonderful experience at the Dark Sky Observatory. Highlights were the good range of beers and other drinks and the friendly and efficient service. We had food from the A la Carte menu and one of the tasting menus, and they were all great and good value - and it’s good to see so much grown on site and sourced locally. Don’t miss the Observatory experience if you stay here - it’s fun and fascinating.

Good but not very. Battlesteads asked us for a review after our departure, and then failed to respond - what a shame. The staff were all very friendly, but they were let down by quite a few things. The bathroom : no blind or curtain in the bathroom, so privacy was an issue. The toilet seat was loose, which was quite disconcerting when it suddenly slipped as you sat on it. The bedroom : wardrobe doors missing a screw on one catch, so did not shut properly. Generally the standard of maintenance within the room was very poor. Breakfast : a good choice on the menu, but it would have been nice if they had advised us that they had run out of standard marmalade, and that chilli marmalade would be provided instead - a slight surprise to the tastebuds..

Fabulous hotel and exceptional staff, food delicious and would love to return soon, thanks to the lovely genuine staff who subtly made it such a pleasant stay. Comfortable bed, tasty breakfast and little bonus treat of fruit in room, decor really nice

This place instantly feels comfortable and genuine. There’s no pretension here. Their eco values are notable and their food so fresh and tasty we all agreed it was the best breakfast of our five day North East tour. The lodge was lovely and spacious and was great for our young family. It was lovely and clean- very important. Finally, the people make the place, helpful and chatty the food service at our evening meal and breakfast was spot on. Thank you to the lovely lady at check in, we’ve had a top time.

Attended my son's wedding here and stayed overnight. Staff, food and drink was all excellent, both during the day and on the evening. Great covered outside area with heating. The lodges are massive, and the hotel rooms well appointed, clean and tidy. An excellent place to stay, eat and drink. Thank you Battlesteads.

Set in an attractive rural hamlet not far from the historic Hadrians Wall, the property is an excellent blend of modern facilities and olde world charm set in grounds which include a beautiful wildlife garden. The staff are brilliant, very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The food on offer is also excellent. The rooms themselves are well appointed and inside and out the property is well maintained. Dogs are not only allowed but welcomed. It is a first class property to stay in and is very eco friendly in all aspects. All this and brilliant value for money.

My friend and I stayed here as part of our walk along Hadrians Wall. We were collected from our daily finishing point by a friendly lady who said that our luggage had been delivered by transfer company and it would be taken to our rooms if we asked. The not very welcoming gentleman on reception said that no one was available to do it but thankfully a passing customer offered . The rooms were clean and comfortable if very warm and most of the staff helpful and friendly. Whilst the jar of homemade biscuits was a nice touch there should have been a list of ingredients provided to accommodate people like my friend with nut allergies. No bottled water was provided but member of staff said we had glasses provided and the tap water was fine. I never drink out of bathroom taps. We only had one course at dinner which was ok but nothing special. I know that the hotel is trying to be green but it was a step too far at breakfast having to even complete a tick list if you wanted milk in your tea.

Brilliant hotel. We stayed for 2 nights on a deal where we had the taster menu the first night. . Food lovely and plenty of it. Staff amazing. Room spacious. No complaints. Would definitely go back. Nice places to visit round about. Our weather wasn't too good but still plenty to do.

The rooms are well maintained, but the junior room we were in was very compact with very little storage for clothes. The staff were always friendly and attentive. The best thing about the hotel is the restaurant where all 14 meals we had there were excellent, but beware if staying for a week that the menus only change weekly on Saturdays.
