It is so difficult to find a good hotel in Varanasi, it seems that there is a significant shortage of accommodation of the kind that would work for people used to a certain level of comfort and convenience. It was with some trepidation that we checked into the Dolphin Grand this week. We usually stay at the Taj or the Radisson but due to a late decision we could not find any rooms for our group. Happily, we enjoyed our stay here very much. The hotel is small and is located in the inner city. However, it is very well appointed and maintained. The lobby is small but welcoming and the staff is very friendly. The location turned out to be very convenient as the ghats are only a short ride away. The rooms are generous in size and the bathroom fixtures are all high end. As is the case with all modern hotels, the power outlets are the universal types, allowing our US chargers to be plugged in easily. The restaurant is large - the hotel runs deep although somewhat narrow in width at the facade. The food is remarkably good. We enjoyed the 'Indian Chinese' menu very much. Wait staff is quick to respond to our needs. A special mention must be made of the Tour Services offered by a sister company of the hotel. We had decided at the last minute to do a city tour and it was past 9 PM when we arrived and asked for a car for the next morning. The concierge was kind enough to respond at that late hour by phone and set up a car for us for the following day. The vehicle was brand new, we were the first to use it! More importantly, the driver was extremely sensitive to our needs which included the care of an elderly lady with us. He accompanied us everywhere after parking the vehicle and it made life so much easier. Highly recommended for the comfort, efficiency, food and furnishings. Most of all for the excellent service we received.
