"An unbeatable location in the fortress and our room had views over the Minho to Spain. Overall the 1960s/1970s vintage feel was ok but the consequence of that is that many of the fixtures and fittings in the bedroom and bathroom are very dated and certainly the bathrooms are in need of modernisation, although the bathtub was welcome. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, the bar staff less so. We did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment but the breakfast was a bit underwhelming, odd eggs and the worst coffee consumed after a week in Portugal. The coffee really needs to get sorted out. The little pastel de nata were very good though. On the whole an underwhelming experience which did not live up to the Pousadas de Portugal’s reputation."

"i must admit i don't get some of the reviews unless my room (302) was renovated.hotel lara doesn't look so good from the outside but inside was a different story. considering i finished my walk for the day very early my room was ready,lifts to all floors,my room was large and looked very smart and had a double bed,good storage space,mini fridge,safety deposit box,free water and coffee facilities,one tidy bathroom with a great shower,throw in a huge balcony which got a lot of sun and was over looking part of the forte and this was one of the best 3 star hotel i have ever stayed in."

"The location is convenient on the pilgrimage, but the service attitude is very general, even some disgusting work attitude, rush to close the work, the room hygiene is not very good, there is hair found in the cup, the senses are very poor!"

"A special stay inside the Valença fortress. We really enjoyed our stay at the Pousada de Valença. It has a classic, welcoming feel — more like a family-run inn than a hotel. The staff were kind and attentive, and made everything easy for us. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, with beautiful views across the hills and the Minho River into Spain. Getting a room with a balcony and view is definitely worth it. The setting inside the walled fortress is one of a kind — quiet, historic, and full of charm. We’d happily stay again."

"We checked into Hotel Lara after our 4th day of walking the Camino. We had experienced outstanding accommodation along the way with well trained staff. At Hotel Lara we were met (not welcomed) by an older male receptionist who seemed quite dismissive. The hotel is outdated and in need of a good clean and refurbishment. We were allocated a room on the first floor which was facing a busy main road. The room was spartan to say the least. No fresh/bottled water, fridge, tea/coffee facilities and two cheap plastic wrapped paper cups in the bathroom. The bed however, was comfortable and the breakfast room had a good selection food. We were not acknowledged or welcomed by the staff serving breakfast. This hotel is situated in the downtown area of Valença. If staying Valenca, search for accommodation in the old town or even Tui, which is approximately 1km down the road. We don’t recommend this establishment ."
