The staff were really helpful and allowed me to check in earlier as I was away in the day during regular check in hours. The room was nice with a good, hot shower but there was some mound in the shower. Nothing too bad, could be removed with a hard scrub.

Advertised as an "Economy Double" for 2 people the ground floor room had a bed smaller (3 feet 11inches wide) than any double bed I've ever come across (4 feet 6inches) certainly too small for the 2 of us to get much sleep. Sleeping was also confounded by the boiling hot radiator that had no way to turn off and the old mouldy sash window that could not be closed let alone locked. This also meant the next door church bells ringing out the hours and half hours through the night couldn't be deadened. On arrival there was no toilet paper and a request for a second pillow each was greated with a not sure we've got any more! The hotel don't do breakfast on Mondays. The room was poorly decorated with lots of cracked paint, a spider in it's web in a dusty corner of the bathroom that lacked any shelf or hook. There were no other rooms available. We moved to another hotel for the remainder of our time away. As we were leaving we met two other couples also leaving early one from the "best room" - a four-poster bed room who said that the bed was so rickety and squeaky they couldn't sleep, the other couple just said their room was disgusting, dusty and uncomfortable. WHATEVER YOU DO - DO NOT BOOK THIS HORRIBLE HOTEL

Our economy double bed was a large single ( 3"7') In a tiny room grateful for our spanner to turn the radiator off on a warm night. No way to lock a downstairs rotten window. No loo rolls on arrival . Don't drop your soap in the shower . No breakfast on a Monday

Travelling with a dog often places us in the position of second class citizens, but we are pleased to say, not in this hotel. Our border collie, Cass was treated with kindness and consideration, as were her owners. We enjoyed a splendid bedroom and bathroom, as well as an excellent breakfast before we went on our way the following morning.

This hotel is 250 + years old, it looked as though this was the last time it was cleaned. Dirty banisters, full of dust dirty mirrors. We stayed in a room with a 4 poster bed, it had no personality, was expecting old and quirky, well old it was. The bed had seen better days, mattress was so thin you could feel the springs every time you turned over. The bed frame was that Rickety, we was waiting for it to collapse, well the curtain if you could call them that, looked like an old sheet that didn’t meet in the middle, the whole room was tired and dated. No hairdryer in the room, And needs a complete overall, Breakfast was so so, eggs awful, coffee cold. But plenty of fresh toast. Cheap Ingredients. Bells going off every half hour, keeping you awake - not the hotel’s fault. The whole place smelt of must. Had some awful stench walking through the stairway. Our room smelt old and damp. Would we stay here again- most definitely not, would I recommend - definitely no. I have stayed in many many hotels, and this has got to be the worst

Went to the races for the evening and stayed here the night. Rooms are clean and quirky. Manager was pleasant. Very quiet and got a great nights sleep. Would certainly recommend for a cheap night after the races, and will be booking again for next year.

Grandma`s Bedroom (room 5) . . Friday 5th April . . Ref J Booth The hotel is very welcoming, the staff we met were great and the hotel is situated really close to all central bars and shops. Im in my 50`s and as I entered room 5 it felt like I had gone back to my childhood and stood in my grandma`s bedroom. True 70`s wallpaper and furnishings that should have been updated a long time ago. A rusty mirrored door cupboard in the bathroom and black mould around the shower wall brackets and to the shower screen hinges Being a frequent UK traveller this room is not worth the £90 asking fee without a refurb.

Well I don’t normally write a review but felt I must on this one, firstly on coming back from races to hotel we was hungry , we asked if we could get something to eat , but was told we would have to get a Chinese from over the road because there was no chef. Then we went in bar, there was two locals sitting with bar maid & nearly every word that came out of his mouth was the F word, this was loud and he kept shouting over to us , this made us feel very intimidated , so we got meal and took it to bedroom. The tv didn’t work, the bed was as hard as nails and the traffics noise and church bells went on all night every 15 minutes , obviously that wasn’t the hotels fault. Breakfast was nice. Biscuits out of date in room Overall we won’t stop there again

This hotel we knew it was a historic building. But it's rundown very dusty. The room we stayed in had a single bed and a double bed which were very comfy and clean linen. But the downfall was no radiator in bathroom it was Baltic there was just a net curtain on window which was unacceptable. Plus a safety issue involving kettle which was on a small shelf ( which is a box for pipes) so you had to pick up boiling kettle and carry it to a set of drawers were the cups had been set out which is dangerous. Plus lights outside bedroom were not working and stair carpet in places it was threadbare again dangerous. On our first night we asked when would the restaurant to be told no they only do breakfast . Breakfast was fine and have to say the staff were friendly and helpful. But it would be a lovely hotel if it was updated.
