The Bunk Inn

"My partner and I stopped in with our baby for a Sunday Roast. The pub was busy but we were greeted by a friendly lady behind the bar and seated quickly to a table with plenty of space for a pram. However, after waiting for a long while for a member of staff to take our order, my partner decided to order at the bar and quickly returned with a rather sulky waitress, who asked us what we wanted without a smile. The food came within 20 mins. Roast chicken for my partner which was a good portion but nothing particularly special. My nut roast was tiny for £16 and very dry disappointing (picture included). No one checked on us to see if we were enjoying our meal or ask if we would like more drinks. We asked for the bill (plates still on table) and were surprised to see that a 10% service charge had been included. We normally tip when dining out, but in this instance we felt that no service was given. We will probably return to the Bunk in the distant future for a drink, but not for food."

The Royal Oak, Yattendon

"After a terrible train journey to Reading and a slightly windy taxi ride (25 mins from Reading £35), it was a joy to arrive at The Royal Oak. The welcome was friendly (and I had had to make some last minute adjustments to the booking via Richard) and after checking in and taking my case upstairs to a very comfortable room, it was back down for a delicious veggie supper with a pint from the local brewery. This is the English Pub at its best. After a lovely warm bath in the very spacious bathroom and a good night's sleep, it was the full English Breakfast with locally sourced produce (all available in the local village store shop across the road). I stayed to work in the pub and then met up with friends for lunch. All delicious and cooked before your very eyes. The service was relaxed and quick and contributed to the quality of the stay."

"We use this hotel at the swan thatcham quite regularly. Another great stay this weekend, with the footie aswell. Really nice all round, very friendly staff, and has a pool table too."
