The Black Bull Inn ★★★★

📍 44 Main St, Sedbergh

"This was our second visit to the restaurant and last time we raved about the food - small, exquisite portions full of flavour and a delight to eat. This visit I felt that something has gone wrong with the menu. Choice of mains were obviously limited and I struggled to find something I wanted to eat, since I have a shellfish allergy, otherwise I would have had the fish. Two chose the lobster raviolo as a starter - both felt that the pasta was far too thick, undercooked and not Al dente. A real pity since the filling and bisque were apparently delicious. For my main I wanted the pumpkin but the waiter was unable to explain the dish, so I plumped for the pork chop - a huge portion with the meat cut from the bone. It was served pink, which was fine, but with so much undercooked fat that it was unpleasant. The new potatoes were drenched in salt so were uneatable. Others tried the lamb tartare with kimchi, which was enjoyed though I was told that it was over-spicy. The apple terrine was the highlight of the meal - fresh, flavoursome and delicious. However this was not enough to encourage us to return in a hurry. Staff were efficient but there was no warm welcome , and when I asked for an explanation about a dish none was forthcoming. A Friday evening and the main restaurant was closed, meaning we ate in the anteroom where any atmosphere was lacking, and the lights too dim."

The George and Dragon ★★★

📍 Main Street Dent, Sedbergh

"Well, here we go; my partner and I were staying in Dent, we dropped in for food on Sunday evening. My partner ordered the “Sunday roast “ (beef), I ordered mushroom and veg lasagne. The roast beef dinner was excellent, but the lasagne was disgusting, I actually commented when it arrived “ I hope this is better than it looks!” It was grey and dry looking and unfortunately it was actually worse than it looked. The bar tender asked about the food and as I had been asked, I gave him an honest reply; credit where it’s due; I was given a refund! Due to their acknowledgment of substandard food, and the fact that there is only 1 eatery in Dent of an evening, we returned on Tuesday evening. I thoroughly enjoyed a pizza and my partner highly rated his burger. Their staff are fantastic, such a shame the food isn’t of the same calibre. Just a few tweaks and I’m sure it could be. The Red Lion ★★★

📍 3 Finkle St, Sedbergh

"We stayed here whilst on a walking holiday. The Red Lion has two bedrooms, both on the first floor. One is at the front of the Inn which has a large bedroom with ensuite bathroom and an adjoining very large lounge which was a lovely surprise. The rooms were clean and very comfortable, Breakfast was good and served in the pub. Staff asked for your breakfast choices the previous evening. We stayed on a Sunday evening and the pub had closed at 2100 hrs. We had been told that if we returned after that time to enter through the rear. Might be worth checking out where the door is as when we returned it was pouring with rain and dark so not immediately obvious."

The Black Bull Inn ★★★★
"We recently dined at the Black Bull in Sedbergh for our honeymoon, which we had noted on the booking in advance. Unfortunately, this was never acknowledged during the evening and, for such a special occasion, even a simple congratulations would have been appreciated. The food itself was excellent and we really enjoyed the quality of every course. We also ordered a bottle of wine costing over £100 and, given the impressive wine list, we were expecting the wine service to reflect that standard. We were therefore surprised that during the meal we were never approached to have either our wine or water topped up. While the meal itself was very good, the service felt less attentive than we had hoped for and this made the service charge feel difficult to justify. Overall, the food was excellent, but the overall experience did not quite match the standard we were expecting for such an important occasion."

The George and Dragon ★★★
"This is a copy of an email I sent to the George and Dragon, Dent following a less than satisfactory stay. I didn't even get a reply! For the attention of the proprietor. I was responsible for organising a recent one night stay for myself and 8 other adult friends (all pensioners) on 8th September. We were all cycling the Pennine Cycleway from Derby the previous few days. We arrived in Dent late afternoon, wet, cold and tired. Space was made available to store our bicycles in a basement room which was great. We then made our way to our allocated rooms, to shower or bathe, warm up and change clothes ready for dinner, booked for 7pm in your restaurant area. Rooms were cold, we asked for the heating to be switched on. There was only enough hot water for 5 of us. 4 of us had to make do with cold water. Unacceptable to say the least. This was pointed out to staff who said that the hot water system had to have time to recover. A verbal appology was made. There was no advance warning that there wouldn't be enough hot water for us all. It was hours later when the water temperature had recovered. That evening, before dinner, I personally reminded the young lady at reception that we weren't happy. And invited her to do whatever she could to help make amends. After meeting up in the bar for a drink, we all ate dinner, even tipping the restaurant staff, and then retired to bed. After breakfast, we all checked out, paying for our rooms in full. The reception staff seemingly having no authority or the will to make amends for the lack of hot water. It's surely a given fact that a 3 star establishment such as the Georgia and Dragon, with 10 rooms should have a hot water system that is at least adequate. I am a retired heating engineer and couldn't help noticing the hot water facility in your basement where our bikes were stored. There seemed to be plenty of room for additional hot water storage vessels, an easy way to increase capacity and intermittent high demand. Although I also suppose that investment may not be a priority if the establishment is currently up for sale. Other things pointed out to me were the following. Radiators full of dirt and debris. Stuck radiator valves. Faulty hairdryer. Loose water tap needing 2 hands to operate. Bedside light not working. Rooms generally requiring upgrading & decorating. The bathroom in my own room looked like the white silicone sealant had been applied with a toothbrush or trowel. Given that the nine of us have paid around £70 each. Apologies only go so far and we feel nothing but ripped off and ignored."
