We stayed originally at the Black Bull in autumn 2023 and were very impressed then, so decided to return. We were not disappointed. We think this is a really excellent pub and restaurant. The food is very good, uses top quality local ingredients and is very interesting. There is an excellent wine list with lots of choice and options to buy wine by the glass. We chose the tasting menu, which included some amazing sashimi, great beef and lovely puddings. The atmosphere in the pub with its roaring fire and traditional feel is very welcoming. We had a lovely room, with a very comfortable bed and great bathroom. Staff are attentive and friendly. The pub also has great midweek offers which represent excellent value for money.

We visited on our way to the dales, we found a nice table in the main lounge as it was only half full. We just wanted sandwiches and share a portion of chips, we both had roast beef with horseradish on a lovely granary bread the sandwiches were delicious although no horseradish the waitress soon brought some out the chips were fantastic together with a good local beer a nice time was had also the young staff were lovely and very efficient.

A warm welcome from staff. All chatty, friendly & professional. The Sed’beer was superb. The place itself needs smartening up in parts. The menu sounded promising but did not deliver. The chateubriand was peppered with fat and gristle, not good. The tomato salad had clearly had extra tomatoes added to the previous day’s bowl thus making it a mix of mushy tomatoes and fresh tomatoes. The amount of chilli in it made it almost inedible (we love chilli!). Sticky toffee pudding was good, with a minuscule amount of ice cream. We were offered money off the meal but felt a bit embarrassed to be honest. Keep doing a great job waiting on staff and bar staff.

It was my partners birthday dinner and although we were aware of it being curry night, we were expecting the main menu to still be on offer which was not the case. The curry was average, as evidenced by our leftovers - we've both had better at our local Indian restaurant. Shame as we really wanted to try the pies some of the reviews had raved about entitling this place to be in the top 50 gastropubs.

Lovely evening for my husbands birthday. Fantastic wine selection, delicious food and great staff. Our room ( Crook) was beautiful. Stunning bathroom and lovely touches in the decor. Loved the chaise longe. Plenty of wardrobe space too- missing in some places we have stayed recently. We will definitely be back.

We were passing on bank holiday Friday night and heard music coming from the back of the bull where there was a great band playing unfortunately this hadn’t been promoted so only about 8 people watching, they also had no shelter or lighting I felt so sorry for them. Then we decided to try the Sunday lunch which was actually very tasty but the beef was cut so thin you could nearly see through it and their excuse was if they cut it any thicker it would have been tough ?! There’s 2 solution here, 1- buy better beef or 2- give more slices of beef, although we would of probably needed about 8 slices to get to your normal cut of a Sunday roast beef, then to top it of asked for extra gravy and was charged £1.50 for a thimble of gravy !

It started with a friendly greeting on entering the pub.Always a good start. Very friendly welcoming people who served with a smile.A MUST for me. I do not like giving my money to staff who make me feel they cannot be bothered or they are doing me a favour. Great service at The Black Bull which i appreciate. The food was impressive .In fact it was one of the best beef pies i have ever had. Gravy 10 out of 10 Chips cooked in beef fat 10 out of 10 Pie 20 out of 10 . Well done to the chef who turned out a plate of food ,that was far better than one of the famous eating establishments that has a country wide reputation, that we ate in last week. I live about 25 miles away but i will gladly drive the 50 mile round trip to eat that pie again.
