The hotel is quite old, but with an atmosphere. Pleasant staff. There is a swimming pool and jacuzzi, in front of the hotel there are wonderful sunset views. The rooms are spacious but the beds are a little sagging - one was tolerable and the other quite uncomfortable. Of the minuses-poor soundproofing and noisy maids in the morning. The breakfast is decent - nothing fancy, but the choice is large and the food is tasty. Directly under the hotel there is a police station and on Saturday evening they stopped all the cars in a row - they checked for alcohol or drugs.

Overall, I did enjoy my stay here and I would return. The staff was exceptional and really bent over backwards with a smile to ensure you were happy. The spa was lovely and I enjoyed having private hot springs as part of the hotel experience. The hot springs are 24 hours, so that can’t be beat. I also appreciated they let you do two nights (other places wanted three night minimums) so I could split my time on the island. The breakfast was a nice spread. They actually provided champagne with the drinks, which is more generous than other hotels. I did a dinner with them too that was good. The rooms themselves were modern and clean. My negatives were that it’s off a busy- ish road and, while I grabbed one of the last rooms, I didn’t appreciate that there would be rooms looking into a parking lot in what I was expecting to be a very serene/remote spot. I’d pay extra for a better view/side when booking. A couple notes: I was surprised that this small town is not very pedestrian friendly. There are very narrow sidewalks and a couple roads where drivers are whizzing by. The town needs more crosswalks and speed bumps. You’re better off with a car here. I was also told that if you tip on the receipt, the money goes to the hotel, which I’m hoping they disseminate, but not directly to the person helping you. I’d have some cash for tips … That said, no one ever appeared like they expected tips.

The hotel is located near a botanical garden. Thermal pool, 2 open jacuzzis and an indoor SPA creates a wonderful atmosphere. The ladies who clean the room deserve the highest rating as it is tough to keep everything perfect while the guests are using the thermal pools with iron (volcanic spring) water. Nice breakfast and terrace.

We stayed 5 nights in this hotel. Let's go one by one.
Room: There was not exhaust system in the toilet. The smell of the sheets was awful since the very first day. The design was nice.
Cleaning service was a joke... We had to ask up to three times for making up the room... Every day was a drama knowing when it was going to be done.
Breakfast: A 5 star hotel does not deserve such a bad breakfast. Orange juice was not even fresh. Spanish Ham was awful(really low quality and bakery... just speechless)
Restaurant: Extremely short variety of dishes. Again, not at expected level of 5 star hotel.
Facilities: There were many rooms yet to be finished and not completely built. Surroundings are really ugly....
Additional comments: We saw many couples&families who had a booking in the frontdesk with no room available... Hotel was offering other room in other hotels at 17km!!
We went to play to the pool (billiard) and there was a leakage on the ceiling... A new hotel with leakage???
Summarizing, the best of this hotel was the staff ...Poor them, trying to ”extinguish” all the fires caused by the hotel & hotel management.
Specially front desk staff: Thx for doing your best!
I provide 3/5 star coz I want to believe that they will fix all this issues in a short time and it will be good by then.

I just returned from a three night stay at this hotel with my girlfriend and our teenage daughter. We have been countless times in S. Miguel as we consider it such a pleasant and beautiful island. This time we opted for a hotel outside the main towns and in fact we managed to do just that. At the same time it is only 20 minutes away from the airport and 15 minutes away from Ponta Delgada or Ribeira Grande, the two main towns. We already visited the nine islands of the Azores archipelago and always get a rental car at the airport (exception at Corvo Island). If you are staying in this hotel, it is paramount that you do the same. As to the hotel itself, we booked it only four weeks in advance on high season, thus we had to pay the full rate of the stay at that moment. Upon check-in on room 206, we were given two identical cards without any distinctive element, one to open the door and the other to insert into the slot for lightening. That is odd, generally, hotels give two identical keys to open the door and one of them, if necessary can be left on the slot when we are out. We were assigned a spacious accommodation with living room, bedroom and bathroom. We did not have sea view and the living room had lots of glass walls overlooking the adjacent condo. All those glasses made it very hot on the sun shining days and we had to keep the AC on during the day. The décor of the room was unstylish and lacking attention to details. The bedroom had a big closet but no clothes rail or hangers. Besides that, one of the doors of the closet could not be opened fully, because it bumped into the shelves that are installed as bedside tables. The safe was old style, that is to say, it closes with a key that we had to ask for at the reception at no charge, along with a cumbersome key ring that we had to take with us whenever we were out of the room. The living room had a well equipped kitchen, that we did not use but it was constantly patrolled by half a dozen ants. We had bought previously some good looking fruits and had to fill a big dish with water and in the middle of it we put a small dish with our fruit so that the ants weren’t able to cross the water in order to get to fruit island. The bathroom was very spacious and pleasant looking even if the washbasin was more stylish than efficient. This room lacked tremendously of a place to put one´s belongings (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, electrical razor and so on). Amazingly no one foresaw the installation of a shelf. The social areas of the hotel such as the lobby are, again, unstylish, corridors have shabby carpeting. The room where breakfast is served has a view to an outside wall and lacks natural lightening. Breakfast itself has a reasonable variety of items, but by no means is it worth 12 euro per person per day, that in our case we were asked to paid in advance, precisely at the same moment we made the reservation. There is a restaurant at the hotel, called Dragoeiro but it features mainly sushi. It is in

Excellent hotel overall. Great location and friendly staff and great grounds/view. The experience there could be dramatically improved with just two small changes:
1. Poolside service - as it is, you have to get your own food and drink. Adding an app or call system would be awesome. A pool waiter/waitress would be amazing.
2. Better mattresses. They felt quite hard, like a budget mattress not appropriate to a nice hotel.

We stayed here for three nights in a two bedroom garden space. I would have to disagree with the reviewers who had complaints about the accommodations. We found the beds to be comfortable, pillows to be great and the space to work really well for a couple and one child. I could see if you shared the space with two couples, you may have issue that one bathroom only has a tub and no shower. One area they could improve is to offer more than two chairs on the deck given the space is two bedroom. The hot tub was nice. It is not super private with the next door neighbors but that wasn’t a big deal for us. I did have an issue one of the days when they were building a gazebo very close, banging for multiple hours. I brought this up to the front desk and we did not hear the noise again. The power went out during our stay which seemed to be unique. The restaurant handled it well when the power returned. The food was delicious in the restaurant for all meals. Make sure you notify the staff if you have a food restriction. I could see if you stayed here for a week, that you would want more options as lunch and dinner offerings overlap. There are some wonderful nearby restaurants. My main issue comes from having to reserve the gym space. I think they do this because there is a massage area in the space. Given the large property it seems they could move the massage area somewhere else as this set up left us with few options to utilize the gym. I would definitely stay here again!

This apart-hotel complex is absolutely beautiful, flowering bushes everywhere with a lovely scent. Our apartment was large and airy and had a great private terrace on the first floor (2nd floor if you’re North American). It really was a home from home with a full dining area with table and chairs and lounge area with sofa, soft rug and tv. The main double bedroom was upstairs with an anteroom having a sofa/pull out bed for children or guests 3&4. Lots of storage in the bedroom but there was a distinct lack of hangers in the wardrobe but loads of drawer space. The kitchen is adequate enough for simple meals (no oven) with a twin hob and microwave, kettle and toaster, and a selection of pots and pans. We managed really well. The hotel provides breakfast 8am - 10am if you want it at 12euros per person. We didn’t try this option. Housekeeping are amazing and come every day! Everything is clean and beds are made. Towels can be changed daily if you like. For a self-catering holiday we found that a lot was provided in the apartment for us: washing up liquid, washing up sponge, washing up cloth and a tea towel. These are replenished and changed as needed. There is also toilet roll, shower gel and hand wash provided in the bathroom which was lovely - again, replenished when needed or on request. The complex gardens are beautiful and well-tended. The pool looked lovely and well-cared for, however we didn’t try it out. There seems to be a hot tub in a wooden building off the pool area - we took a look but it was grubby and the water had floating debris. I’m sure they would have sorted it out if we had asked, but we were out and about discovering the island every day. You definitely need to hire a car for the duration of your stay here as there isn’t any bus route nearby and taxis would be very expensive to get around the island. HANDY TIP: If you’re picking up your hire car on landing at the airport and driving to Quinta da Santana - to get into the complex there is an electronic gate that requires a remote control. When you first arrive, drive past the big metal gate and find the next smaller (pedestrian) gate. Put the hazard lights on in the car and get out to ring the bell. This alerts reception who will come and open the gate for you or just give you a remote straight away so you can drive into the complex. We had a horrendous time of looking and looking and going around and around the roads trying to find the entrance!! We didn’t know about the need to ring the pedestrian gate bell (face palm!) The reception staff are lovely and very accommodating and speak English very well. I’m not sure what other languages they can speak. The area that Quinta da Santana is situated in is the one fly in the ointment….it seems really run down and the road they are situated on is all full of industrial buildings and commercial businesses. Further exploration within Santana uncovers the grubbier side of agricultural life with its local working class community.
In the scenic Azores archipelago, our hotel is steps from the museum at Science and Technology Park and minutes from the EN1-1A highway. The city of Ponta Delgada and Santa Barbara Beach are within 11 kilometers. During your stay, enjoy our indoor and outdoor pools, restaurant and pool bar, meeting rooms, and fitness center.

GGusNSA truly wonderful hotel.
With only 9 rooms, the staff focuses on making every guest experience exceptional.
The location is great, central enough to explore the Island and come back too every day. While the view from, and upon exiting, your room will take your breath away every single time.
All of the accommodations are top notch, the bed was supremely comfortable and even the linens and towels had a plush feeling.
Breakfast options can be slightly redundant but the quality and freshness of the ingredients, along homemade jam and juice, as well as a flexibility to switch things up on the menu, more than make up for it.
We the hotel restaurant is excellent for dinner as well. So much so that we ended up defaulting to it more than once during our stay.
We also appreciated small details like the phone they provided upon check-in that followed us everywhere on the island for spur of the moment suggestions and reservations through the hotel!
All in all, highly recommended, my wife and I know we’ll be back!
RRibeiroTãniaThe location is good, quite central and the service was good. The breakfast could be improved in terms of the amount of elements to put in the bread, which they gave us was insufficient for two people and the breakfast cereals should have been something like oatmeal and granola instead of achapic and estrelitas. Overall I think it has good quality for the price.
MMAIZHONGThe scenery is good, a bit biased, eating is very inconvenient, the hotel restaurant is not bad. With the children to go, there is no extra bed, I received a breakfast fee of 12 euros, the facilities and breakfast of this five-star hotel is really flattering, the domestic three or four stars level, breakfast is too bad
GGuest UserMy family and I really enjoyed our stay in a one bedroom apartment. It was clean, comfortable, fully-equipped and had ample room for a family of 4. The grounds of the hotel are absolutely stunning - full of beautiful flowers and plants. My teenage boys really enjoyed using the hot tub, pool, sauna and gym. The hotel is centrally located on the island making it very easy to access most of the major sites and only a 10 minute drive to downtown Ponta Delgada. The owner of the hotel was very friendly and accommodating during our stay. We will definitely stay here again!
DDianaVery good hotel to stay, either for a getaway or for a longer stay. Provide a pleasant experience. Very good facilities, nice decor, good cleanliness, friendly and helpful staff. Spacious rooms and comfortable bed. Spa area, pool, jacuzzi etc is nice. Breakfast is good and varied and the dinner buffet is great, with lots of options and tasty food.
Tthegeorgiegirl1I can imagine this hotel was once the height of sophistication! It’s old fashioned but beautiful and great value for Ponta Delgada. Great location however parking tricky (we found a spot nearby but the app wouldn’t download to pay for it so had to find change for machine, by which time got a fine - only 6 euros but needed paying by cash too!). There are quite a few drunk people hanging around in the park right outside- this is quite common in Sao Miguel. We had a family suite which was huge & very comfy with a bath. There were a few power cuts. The swimming pool is the best feature with gorgeous views. Breakfast is pretty good.
SShirley MerciecaWe were very happy with the service. The receptionists were all very helpful, especially Bruno, and the room and beds were very comfortable too. When we requested a mini fridge, they efficiently provided us with one. The only thing we didn't like was the fact that we, as hotel guests, still had to pay €4 to park our car inside. This should have been free for hotel guests.
GGuest UserWanted: a conveniently-located comfortable hotel. Found: the Hotel Matriz. Flight delays from Lisbon meant I arrived after midnight but the night manager took care of all my needs. A comfortable room but looking out on a major building project - the only thing to see from my window. I didn't come here for the view, so no problem (although the noise at my siesta time was a bit invasive). In the room, everything I would expect of this category hotel. Breakfast was adequate but, after a week, it gets a bit repetitive. Car parking (free) is three floors below the hotel and best if the rental car is SMALL! Would I stay there again? ABSOLUTELY!
I would grade this more as a European 3* but it still offered good value considering it's location and standard of accommodation. We had to move rooms after a few days as our original room (502) faced some outlets that omitted a nasty smell of an evening which meant we could not sit out on the balcony - reception staff speak great English and thankfully managed to swap to new room. The pools (indoor and outdoor), steam room and sauna were great but jacuzzi needs servicing as only a couple of jets actually work and was very murky. Spa treatments very reasonable and very good. (Read a review saying you need to bring your own towels to use pools - this is not true, you can obtain pool towels from reception for EUR10 deposit.) Didn't use restaurant but bar staff were great and food was good (chips are crisps, not fries though!) Kitchenette is exactly that, two hobs, combi microwave and kettle - cooking a family meal for 5 was a challenge but doable with a camping style outlook! All in all a great budget friendly base for exploring the island or taking boat trips and being able to semi self cater.
GGuest UserWe stayed for only one night due to its proximity to the airport, as we were travelling on the next day. The location is superb, being very central and within walking distance of everything you will require. Turn right on exiting, and you are a 2 minute walk to the port area with all its restaurants, bars, and also a lot of street food on offer, there is also a public swimming area in the harbour. Turn left on exiting, and you immediately have a choice of two cheap breakfast locations. Walk the side streets for bars, restaurants, and entertainment. The reception and breakfast staff are really fantastic, knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating, which is worth a few stars alone. Our room on the 3rd floor was fine, it was spotlessly clean, the beds were very comfortable and the bedding of good quality. The ensuite was again fine, not luxurious but equipped with everything you require. The room generally was a bit soulless, looking over the rear of the hotel and pretty basic, but then we were there on holiday, the plan never was to spend much time in the room. The breakfast is a standard buffet type breakfast that's perfectly adequate but won't blow your socks off, many alternatives exist close by. No onsite parking provided but paid parking available close by. The hotels location and staff make up for any shortcomings that may, or indeed may not exist. Just enjoy the convenience it offers and relax.
