The Stronlossit Inn ★★★
"Small hotel in the ditch. Overall, it is expensive."
Birchbank Guest House ★★★
"We were supposed to stay for two nights but left after one as we found this bed and breakfast so uncomfortable. Firstly it is a bed and breakfast but you have to pay £14 extra for breakfast IN CASH (very unsure why it is only cash). We didn’t have cash so couldn’t book breakfast. On arrival we were shown to our room. It was next to the front door and ‘reception area’ so we expressed our concern about noise. There was no offer to move us to a quieter room, only a comment that the person before didn’t complain about noise and it should be fine. If I’m paying £125 a night (with an agency discount), I would like more certainty about this! The room is very small. There is no where to put large bags or clothing. There was a minuscule wardrobe where you could hang things. The bathroom was so small you couldn’t dry yourself in it as it was so narrow (we are not large people!). As previously noted on other reviews - the room is very light in the mornings. We didn’t operate the Zebra blinds correctly and draw the curtains but it was still very bright (the owners responded to other criticisms blaming the person for not closing the blinds correctly. This is not the case). The biggest problem was the noise from the bathroom upstairs - every time a tap was run or toilet flushed it was like a gushing waterfall sound in our room. This woke me up several times - the first time I actually thought there was water pouring in the room. When I mentioned this the owner’s response was ‘it’s a small house’. My home is not that big but we do not hear water running in that way. We could also hear the conversation of people in the room above. The bed linen smelt of stale tobacco - now this could have lingered from the previous guest maybe or the linen is stored where people are smoking. Either way it meant for an unpleasant nights sleep. The area around Fort William is expensive but this room was so over-priced. There are far better places to stay and I do not recommend Birchbank Bed & Breakfast. I’m sure the owners will respond in a disparaging way (looking at other negative reviews) but this is our honest review."
