Chidambara Vilas - A Luxury Heritage Resort

Wow, what a beautiful building. The history in this place is amazing. We did the tour of the hotel with a member of staff and it was so interesting. The staff were super friendly and very obliging. The food was good. The swimming pool looked super clean but we didn't have the time to use it. The outside bar area by the pool was good to mix with friends. The bedroom was amazing...a four poster bed. You could imagine how this building would have been so luxurious in it's hayday. This is definitely a hotel to cone and visit.

I had zero expectations due to how rural the hotel was situated. But this gem of a hotel out performed itself. The food and hospitality was really great.

We were at Chidambara Vilas in September 2024 for a 1 night stay. Unfortunately we stayed for less than 24 hours as my father became unwell and we had to return back to Delhi. However, based on our visit we were pleasantly surprised by the way the spacious rooms have been refurbished, in a very aesthetic and pleasing manner. The bathroom was large and spacious as was the common verandah in front of the room. Right from booking till the point at which we checked-in the communication with the hotel was quick. They also managed to pull out an old wheelchair for helping with movement of my father. The fact that the hotel has a lift will come as a big relief for those travelling with small children or elderly, - this really was very helpful. For a la cart dinner, the portion sizes were quite large. Since we checked out early morning on way to Trichy airport, on request the hotel staff were kind enough to pack a simple breakfast. We appreciated that they were flexible with the reasonable requests. The ground floor of the Vilas is beautiful and guests should definitely take a tour of the property. It was also very helpful that there was ample parking and a dorm for the driver and attendant. We hope to be able to go back to the property at some time in the future, if we pass through this part of Tamil Nadu. In terms of location, it was an ideal place for our planned journey break between Swamimalai and Rameshwaram. p.s.: Watch out for the monkeys!

Chidambara Vilas itself is a beautifully preserved heritage property, rich with history and architectural charm. The ambiance instantly transported me back in time, setting the perfect stage for the traditional Sadhya feast that followed. The meal was a true celebration of Kerala’s culinary heritage, served on a banana leaf with an array of vibrant and flavorful dishes. Each bite was a delight, from the tangy sambar to the perfectly spiced avial, all accompanied by fluffy rice and crisp pappadams. What made the experience even more special was the warm hospitality and attention to detail. The staff took great care in explaining the significance of each dish, enhancing my appreciation for the meal. Chidambara Vilas was an unexpected highlight of my journey, offering a taste of South India’s rich cultural and culinary traditions in a setting that is both luxurious and historically significant. If you’re ever in the area, this hidden gem is well worth a visit.

Nice reception from check in. They gave us history of the place. Helped my wife all the way to room. Food was excellent and served with affection chettinad style. Nice pool area. Friendly staff and overall enjoyed our short stay.
