If you do stay (and you should) then book direct. It's cheaper and no third parties causing confusion (we've had problems). We often visit family in the area and have tried many different places, but we will not need to try any others now. It's a lovely building, full of character with a real charm. The decorations are authentic and add to the homely welcome feel. We slept like logs on the comfy beds after busy days in the area. The breakfast is second to none and kept us going until the evening - full English (a guilty pleasure we have on our trips), cereal, fruits, yogurts, pastries, everything you could want. All cooked beautifully with a special nod to the poached eggs; Pauline did tell me how to do them (you put them in the bubble), but mine never come out as well. Free private car park, free wifi, I have paid a lot more for a lot less especially in England (we're from Toronto). It has all the little things you need. The hosts are relaxed and friendly and will do anything for you. Going above and beyond is no problem for them. A real home from home.

Such a shame lovely building and perfectly situated for pickering and surrounding area..plenty of parking. Beautifully entrance hall. Everywhere needs a update in decorations and furnishings our room had a bath with a plastic shower hose from bath taps second morning that didn't work way over priced for what you get family very pleasant just needs some money spent to bring up to standards .needs Alex the hotel make over lady to help then they may have more occupancy. So more money coming in .

Fabulous location with added car park. Hosts are lovely with great service , nothing too much trouble & the breakfast amazing, so much choice. The property is very old & this does reflect in the rooms decor but everything clean & all you need for a comfortable stay, some lovely touches. Had great nights sleep bed very comfy. There's some traffic noise so if a light sleeper may be a problem but didn't bother me. Good value. Shout out to Hiccup!

Great location, great host, even greater breakfast. Located close to town centre and north Yorkshire railway for a good day out. Also easy to reach north Yorkshire moors and coast. The decor not to everyone's liking but we did, would say again.

The hotel is clean and the beds were relatively comfortable, unfortunately that is all we can recommend about the place, the initial appearance of the hotel was good apart from being sited on a roundabout on a busy road and you do hear lorries going pass in the early hours of the morning especially if you stay in the family room on the top floor as we did. It was like going back in time as our room was decorated with a lot of seventies chintz and reading matter ( I especially liked the complete guide to home decorating from 1972, and Pam ayers ' some of me poems ' ) they do provide tea and coffee making facilities but the coffee and hot chocolate are kept in washed out spice jars which you can't get a tea spoon into, that evening we went down to the bar for a drink, whilst waiting to meet up with our colleagues my friend asked for a pint of lager and was given a can which only came up to around the 3/4 mark on the glass so said he would have another and was then asked for £5.50! But the real problems started when we went to breakfast the next morning, the first two of our party went down to be asked if they wanted their breakfast straight away, when they said they wanted to wait for the rest of our party they was then told that the breakfast would be easier for them if we came down in intervals!! There was six in my party and we were the only ones staying at the hotel which makes you wonder how they would cope if they were fully booked. After asking for extra toast I was told ' I'm getting it aren't I?!!' the owner doing an excellent basil fawlty impression. We felt awkward and uncomfortable asking for anything else after the toast was brusquely put down on the table. We did find it quite a comedic experience but would not stay again as the service and decor of the rooms was not worth the money we paid, although it was clean and the breakfast we had was good, just don't ask for extra toast!

When booking was not asked for a deposit which we thought was strange as most hotels ask for at least your card details. We looked at the hotel on the website and thought that it looked great, on arrival we were a little disappointed. We were shown to our room which was clean, but very dated, as my husband put it , 'It's like staying in your Grandma's bedroom' There were toby jugs and chintz all around. Breakfast was a joke, and due to fits of laughter 'on my behalf' we were unable to complain. The fruit was dry and had seen better days, toast was limited to 1 1/2 slices per guest, and then when breakfast came things were missing. the beans came straight from the microwave in a bowl and the black pudding after we had asked, which was stone cold and my husband sausage had only been cooked on one side, and was raw on the other. We were not told until later that they had no hash browns and were replaced by fried bread. During breakfast the 'lady ' of the hotel came out from cooking breakfast, wearing a mucky T-shirt and nothing on her legs. I think if we had seen her first we wouldn't have even bothered to order breakfast. The reception area you were met with a cat and a dog not a nice site. I understand that hoteliers are entitled to have pets but guest should not have to share them. On leaving we paid the bill CASH OR CHEQUE only, we were not asked if we had, had a good time or if everything had been ok. I am sorry to say that I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. The only thing that it had going for it were, the large car park and the location. This is a shame as it could be a lovely place. The internet is a good thing, but on this occasion I thing that the photos must have been either from 'the best room' in the hotel, or from somewhere, and that the reviews were wrote by the hoteliers themselves. Unless of course they were having a 'BAD DAY'

Today I was informed that a concert we were attending had been cancelled. Once home from work I contacted the Crossways to cancel my room. I was informed to contact ******* to do this. So onto my emails... I had while 23:00 this evening to cancel at no cost. So promptly emailed to cancel my reservation. Whilst I was doing this I received an email telling me my payment had been made to The Crossways. I emailed The Crossways to ask why this had happened. I then rang my bank to cancel the payment. Then I rang The Crossways to ascertain the reason. The gentleman who I spoke to was very rude to me. He said he would get back to me in the next few days... I asked who had taken the payment and he didn't seem to know. I explained that I had only phoned less than half an hour before to cancel and was told that the hotel was not responsible as my booking was through *******. To say that I am perplexed is an understatement! I fully understand that the hotel is losing trade due to the cancellation but to blatantly mislead me is very wrong. Unfortunately I will not be spending any of my money with this hotel. A very disgruntled person.
