Shap Wells Hotel

Stayed here several times, even a couple of times when they had only just re opened following each of the Covid lockdowns and always enjoyed, had a fab welcome and the rooms are clean. Not saying its perfect for everyone as some of you will not be a fan of the gold and red decor in the rooms , reception and corridors. But its not shabby its just old fashioned. The bathrooms are moden and the bar and restaurant have had a face lift with a not ultra moden colour scheme of cream and blue but it suits the building style. Dont expect spa, gym or pool and dont expect room service or cocktails. But you will always get a warm and friendly welcome and service. The setting is off the beat and track , but worth finding this gem, at the side of the woods , with stream running over waterfall and rock oh and keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels. Food is good at breakfast though no veggie sausages which some did complain about, food is good value in the evening though a limited choice of 4 starters 4 mains and 4 puds including a veggie option. Yorkshire portions for the main and loads of veg. Bar prices higher than pub prices but not that bad for a hotel.

Second stay at shap wells hotel but this time we stayed in the family room and was very nice and the breakfast was just great

Start two night on deal 2 night bed and breakfast one 3 course evening meal. Room small but cosy , payed for second meal not as nice but OK, breakfast nice and all staff lovely. Manger very helpful and friendly, everything clean and tidy , went see squirrels red ones near hotal very sweet.

I felt I had to leave a review, after reading some recent reviews before we arrived, which were very negative we were pleasantly surprised at how lovely the Hotel was, very appropriate style and decor for the age of the building, our room was lovely, very clean in all areas, a comfy four poster bed, a creaky floor but hey that's character in my opinion, the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful and the food was very nice, we did not eat away from the Hotel as all meals were good and certainly not expensive as some had quoted, all in all very enjoyable, especially as we went to photograph the Red Squirrel.

My wife and I arrived on Friday for a 2night stay,from the word go we were made to feel very welcome, we found that all the staff were very helpful , friendly and accommodating.its a very remote setting but the grounds are stunning with red squirrels in abundance!! Room nice, king-size bed was very comfy.all in all a very enjoyable break.if we had to knit pick, we sat by the window in the restaurant and noticed quite a few cobwebs on the inside of the glass , just a feather duster every now and again would rectify this minor problem .

Where to start? Food was generally poor especially at the price. No bar, just a member of reception who was waiter, barman, and reception all rolled into one! ( And to be fair he did a good job seen as he was the only person in the hotel along with the cook ) Hotel was generally empty and yet they still gave us a room right next door to another guest who had his TV blaring all night. Could have spaced us out a little bit!! The room was OK but the toilet blocked which we only noticed when checking out ( only stayed one night thankfully ) The bed was the cheapest of the cheap and like a trampoline absolutely terrible. Blood on the duvet and kettle or certainly it was red. Dusty foisty smelling place glad to leave.

You have to drive down a pot hole filled narrow track to even get to the Hotel. Inside the place was dark, and almost deserted, lights off, no bar open, very uninviting! We felt like turning around and leaving immediately, however we checked in and went to our room. Small, dated and very dusty, bed tiny and a very cheap mattress. We came for 1 night to see the red squirrels, planning on having a nice meal and a few drinks at the bar in the evening. You book a time slot for your meal. The bar wasn't open, the man behind reception said he could get us a drink,so we had to sit in the lobby with our drinks. The meal was VERY overpriced and not good quality at all, food only served until 7.30pm as well. We had a sleepless night , a really mediocre breakfast which was basically a choice of full English swimming in grease with reheated bacon and sausage, both rock hard. There was cheap bread and a toaster to help yourself, some cereals , some bowls of yoghurt , jams , no croissants, no nice breads/cheeses etc. coffee was instant. Feel ripped off, tired and ache from the bed + it's not helped my asthma being in such a dirty dusty place. This place is only kept going from coach parties, so not interested in other customers. We would recommend you don't bother wasting your money coming here, stay elsewhere and just drive down to see the squirrels for a few hours.
