Didn't stay here, but stopped off for a drink, a toastie, and some soup after a mornings walking in the area. Friendly staff, large outdoor seating area to take in the lovely afternoon sun, on a chilly October day. No complaints with the food or drinks.

Stopped by for a bite to eat and a drink after a walk to Patterdale. Sat out front in the gorgeous sunshine. Very friendly barman. This place could make an absolute killing if it just made a few improvements such as outside table service and updating its menu. It seems a missed opportunity and am sure the Hotel Inspector would have a field day if she were to visit and offer some good advice. Not knocking the place at all. They serve a good pint of local ale which is great, but the place could be so much much more.

The hotel is in a lovely spot near Ullswater and the beds are comfortable but that is the extent of the good things. The hotel is shabby and old fashioned and our bedroom floor was covered in bits of tissue when we arrived. We had booked a Lake View room and paid extra for it but what we got was a glimpse of a small stream, the lake was nowhere to be seen which means they lied and charged us for it. The breakfast was barely cooked and lukewarm. We won't be staying here again. We travel a lot and this is the first time we've ever written a bad revue so I think that says it all.

What a wonderful gem of a hotel! On a coach tour and spent 5 days here. The staff are delightful, attentive and nothing is too much trouble. The food is amazing, great selection, all freshly prepared and home made. Such a bonus these days. Thank you for making our stay so special.

Stayed for two nights as we’re at a wedding at a venue close by. Stunning area, friendly staff, clean room, comfy bed, powerful shower and delish breakfast! Bang for your buck 👏🏻 (only issue we had was parking as overflow car park was also full)

This was our first trip to the Patterdale Hotel but it won’t be our last, and we have been to many Choice Hotels and like their “well organised” approach. I really cannot understand any of the criticism you will see on here, the Patterdale does what it says on the tin! This is a very good quality midrange hotel which does not claim to be a 5 Star, and it offers great deals. We stayed on a 4-night midweek Dinner Bed and Breakfast deal which was excellent value for money. Worth paying the supplement for a view room, which are clean and comfortable, just short of a mini-fridge. The food was excellent, buffet breakfast but also some excellent breakfast menu choices including Kippers. The 3 course evening meal menus offered a varied classic range of foods, hearty and well prepared and delivered with the military precision we expect from Choice Hotels. I perhaps wouldn’t recommend a visit to my vegan step-daughter or anyone with weird dietary requirements, but us “typical’s” should love it. The hotel is especially well placed for walkers and therefore specifically caters for them (this is a no dogs allowed hotel). The views, location and weather were wonderful, and we will visit again as it is an great step-off point for touring the Lake District.

Watch out for your phone bill, I was charged £10.49 for a 10 minute call to book my break. Choice Hotels are explicit in saying you will be charged 7p per min but my phone company EE added an 84p per minute charge for ringing an 0844 number, this was the only number I was given to book. I wanted to speak to reception rather than email to get the best room for our needs and hadn't expected this from EE. Parking was a bit limited in front of the hotel but there is a car park just across the road free for guests. Staff were all pleasant and helpful, room was clean and had everything needed, fairly basic, food was plentiful and good but not nouvelle cuisine by any means. We used the local bus to go to Windermere rather than drive which is pleasant ride over the Kirkstone Pass and gave plenty of time in Bowness. We have stayed at the Keswick Country House also a Choice Hotel, which is more luxurious if you want more than a walkers base.

Mould on my bread and a rotten tomato in the salad! We only stopped off for a sandwich as we had stayed here previously. (We stopped going there as it is so dated and the evening meals were terrible) The barman was horrified when I took the mouldy sandwich up to the bar to complain.. having taken a bite!!! He immediately apologised and returned it to the kitchen. Unfortunately he then went off duty after telling the next barman what had happened. When the replacement sandwich was ready the new staff member could not have been more ungracious if he’d tried!! No apology, just dumped it down on the table and left. On inspection the tomato on my husbands plate was also rotten!!! To add insult to injury the ‘chef’ then came out and remonstrated with the barman telling him he had inspected the rest of the loaf and found it to be ok! Not sure how both of my slices were therefore the only ones in the loaf that were undoubtedly and undisputedly mouldy!! There was no apology from the two members of staff, no offer of recompense and when we left we said goodbye to the receptionist and, what appeared to be the manager, who was lolling about on the reception and neither of them acknowledged our farewell! What a shambles! We will NEVER return.

The location gives access to numerous walking routes from the door catering for all levels. A stunning setting overlooking Place Fell at the head of Ullswater. Great VFM, clean comfortable rooms and well-cooked food. Excellent service from staff. Have been coming back for over 15 years.
